Worst in the World: The Time New Jack Tried To Murder Vic Grimes (And The Incident That Led To It Happening)

It was only a matter of time before New Jack popped up in the Worst in the World. Over the course of his near 30-year career, New Jack developed two reputations. One as someone who fully embodied the high-risk, violent brawling style that made ECW popular. The other, which is more prominent, is of someone who's more than willing to take liberties with & shoot on his opponents with little to no provocation. There were no shortage of incidents that saw New Jack, at best, take things a bit too far to put it mildly, and worst, engage in some genuinely criminal behavior. New Jack is so infamous for these incidents that you can probably think of more matches where he did shoot on an opponent than matches where he didn't. Today, at the request of both frequent contributors to the recommendations Frost and an anonymous user, I'll be taking a look at one of these incidents. That incident being New Jack's Scaffold match against Vic Grimes from Xtreme Pro Wrestling's Freefall event in 2002, a match that features, as New Jack himself has stated multiple times, a genuine attempted murder. But that story doesn't actually start there, because, as New Jack has also stated, the reason he tried to kill Vic Grimes stemmed from an incident two years prior at ECW's Living Dangerously event in 2000. So, if I'm gonna cover the conclusion of this story, might as well cover the beginning.

Match (?) #1: Living Dangerously

As I mentioned, this story starts in 2002  at ECW's Living Dangerously pay-per-view in Danbury, Connecticut with the ninth match on the card. Actually, calling this a "match" is a bit generous. Everything I read (Wikipedia, the Internet Wrestling Database, Cagematch.net) lists it as a match, but I don't think a referee ever comes out during the whole thing, so I don't know. This match was an impromptu contest that came about following Balls Mahoney's win over Kintaro Kanemura. Mahoney would be attacked by Da Baldies, (Vic Grimes, Angel, and Tony DeVito), with Grimes putting Mahoney through a table with a senton bomb off the top rope. This cues up Natural Born Killaz by Dr. Dre & Ice Cube (or if you're watching on Peacock or the WWE Network, you get "Hip Hop Song #6") as New Jack joins the fray, wheeling a trash can full of weapons down to the ring with him. New Jack cleans house, breaking a crutch over Angel's back before bodyslamming DeVito, attempting to place an original Playstation on his dick, and then smashing both the console and DeVito's penis with another crutch. New Jack then smashes a guitar over Angel's head, which Angel sells by staying on his feet, flailing around, and then falling to the mat. New Jack then gets attacked from behind by Grimes, so now the "match" can actually start, I think.
Grimes wastes no time with the violence, cutting New Jack's forehead with a pizza cutter. A young Nick Gage takes notes. New Jack fights back, biting Grimes' forehead before hitting him across the back with a snow shovel. Grimes responds by tossing New Jack out of the ring and hitting a diving clothesline off the apron, which ends with Grimes taking a rough-looking bump to the unpadded floor. Grimes throws New Jack over the barricade, leading to the two brawling through a packed crowd. This isn't like WWE there are open areas for crowd brawls, they're just moving through big groups of people while they're brawling. The two make their way over to a scaffold, where Grimes hits New Jack with one of those posts that creates a line at a movie theater before setting up a table. Grimes sets New Jack on the table before stacking a second table on top. Grimes starts to climb the scaffolding, but New Jack gets off the table and meets him at the top.
The two brawl on the top before Grimes tries to powerbomb New Jack, but Jack blocks it with a low blow. This is where a not-very-good brawl turns incredibly scary. The plan seems to have been the two of them were supposed to take a dive off the 15-foot-high scaffold. However, once up there, Grimes could go throw with it, prompting New Jack to, on the fly, jump off while dragging Grimes down with him after.
New Jack lands feet first and breaks the tables, while Grimes falling after New Jack causes him to land on Jack's head & against the concrete floor. The result was New Jack suffering multiple serious injuries with a broken leg and a skull fracture, was permanently blinded in his right eye, and suffered brain damage. It is horrifying to watch. Grimes is helped to his feet and to the back by security, while the last we see of New Jack before they cut to Joey Styles & Cyrus (Don Callis) on commentary is him being attended to by other members of security. There's no pinfall or anything, but the near-death of a wrestler is as good a reason as any to end a match, in my opinion.

The Verdict

The infamous ending is obviously why this match is remembered. It's already a super dangerous spot jumping from 15-feet up onto tables (in an area that, like the rest of ECW, had zero padding and was just a concrete floor), but the messy execution and horrible outcome makes it even worse. But what about the actual match. Again, if you can even call it that, this match is not good. It's a straight up brawl that is almost 50% just walking through the crowd. Outside of the pizza cutter and the scaffold, there's nothing really all that memorable. There's really no reason to watch any of this.

Match #2: Freefall

So, we've seen someone almost kill someone on accident, now it's time to see someone almost kill someone on purpose. Nearly two years after Living Dangerously and a year after ECW went under, New Jack and Vic Grimes would face off once again, this time in an actual Scaffold match, or a "Freefall match" as it's billed as. What kind of company would book a scaffold match between two people who were involved in a near-fatal accident involving a scaffold years prior?
XPW, that's the company. Yes, Xtreme Pro Wrestling, a company owned by pornographic film company owner Rob Black that was founded almost entirely out of spite when a deal between Black & Paul Heyman to help ECW expand into the West Coast fell apart when ECW signed a network deal with TNN. Looking back, XPW feels like a fever dream. Presenting hardcore & deathmatch wrestling with super-risque storylines & writing, along with a noticeable amount of porn stars present, XPW probably has more infamous moments (both in the ring & out) than actual memorable matches...kind of like New Jack, who was among the many ECW alumni that joined XPW when the former closed down. And so, with the match set for the main event of XPW's Freefall event, New Jack, a man known for taking liberties with opponents, holding a grudge over an incident that caused him serious & lasting pain (along with Jack stating Grimes did not contact him after the incident at Living Dangerously while he was injured), and about to wrestle the man who was involved in the incident (even if it was accidental), it's hard to imagine this would be anything less than a disaster
Right at the start, we get a wide shot showing the set-up.
They say the scaffold is 40-feet high & the tallest scaffold ever built for a wrestling match, and while there's a lot of inflation when it comes to numbers in wrestling, it's hard to argue it's not just by looking at it. There's also 12 tables stacked up 4x4 in the ring to break the fall. Well, there supposed to break the fallNew Jack's out first with his garbage can of weapons, tossing them in the ring before grabbing a mic. He still comes out to Natural Born Killaz, and I don't believe for a second Rob Black paid for the rights to use it. He says he wanted to have the kind of match he wanted and that he's putting it on the line. He says he'll quit the business if he doesn't beat Grimes. He thanks the fans for sticking by him when he got hurt, when he got in trouble with the law ("not guilty as fucking usual" as he puts it), and when he got thrown off the balcony, before telling Grimes to come out because one of them "ain't gonna walk out this motherfucker tonight."
Grimes obligies, walking out and into the ring. New Jack quickly pounces on Grimes, wrapping his chain around Grimes' neck before raking his eyes and hitting him in the head with a keyboard. Jack then pulls a fork out of pocket and stabs Grimes in the head with it multiple times. Jack follows up by hitting Grimes across the back with a crutch, but Grimes turns the tables with a low blow. Grimes grabs a pizza cutter, cutting New Jack's forehead. A less-young Nick Gage takes more notes. Grimes then grabs what the commentators describe as a "quintuple pizza cutter" but I'm fairly sure that's a thing you score dough with when baking bread.
Regardless, Grimes goes back to cutting New Jack's forehad with it, prompting Jack to roll out of the ring. Grimes follows him out and smashes a "Wet Floor" sign before New Jack chops him in the throat. Jack goes back in the ring and grabs barbed wire whip, whipping Grimes before dragging it across Grimes' forehead. Grimes fights back, smashing a water jug on New Jack. Grimes then drags the barbed wire whip across Jack's face, which Jack responds to by choking Grimes with a camera cable. This is all on the ground, by the way, they haven't even attempted to go up on the scaffold.
New Jack drags Grimes over to the stage, throwing him down onto the ramp before throwing him into the guard rail. Grimes fights back by hitting Jack with another drink, prompting Jack to grab a golf club (I think it was a driver) and break it over Grimes back. A fair trade off, really. New Jack throws Grimes back n the ring, but Grimes retreats when Jack follows him in. They finally climb the scaffold, where the two traded blows before kicks Grimes low. And now is when New Jack stops working. He pulls out a taser, tasing Grimes multiple times before we witness, again, as New Jack himself has said multiple times, an attempted murder.
New Jack grabs and tosses Grimes off the scaffold and down to the ring, missing all but two of the 12 tables, landing on the ropes and bouncing into the ring. It is impossible to state through words just how close Vic Grimes comes to dying here. If he goes a little further, he lands outside the ring and hits the cement. The fact that a dislocated ankle is apparently the worst thing Grimes suffered is a miracle. If he goes a little to the right, he hits the ring post. New Jack celebrates as the show ends with medics attending to Grimes.

The Verdict

So...here's the thing. Ranking this match the way I normal do doesn't feel right. Because this match is a pretty standard hardcore brawl followed by a standard scaffold match...but it includes an attempted murder, as stated by the person who committed it. I've covered matches that have devolved into one person shooting on the other, but they never devolved into anything like this. It feels weird to rank something like this the same way I rank a match something like the 1995 World War 3 match or Akira Maeda vs Andre the Giant. I tried to think about what to do with cases like this where a match goes beyond just being a bad wrestling match, and what I'm gonna do it essentially create a second tier of the list. Tier 1 is matches that are just bad in general, while Tier 2 are matches that venture past just being bad and range from blatantly negligent to morally wrong. Tier 1 is gonna be the normal white font, while Tier 2 will be in red. So, with that said...

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. Next week, I'll be covering a match from TNA's Against All Odds 2010, which features one biggest examples of nepotism in wrestling history. Stay tuned.

  1. Here’s a suggestion that popped in my head. Team Alliance vs Team Mercenaries at Survivor Series 1990. Revisiting the Bushwhackers and the Bolsheviks (albeit on opposite sides) turncoat Sarge cutting a long promo before the match and a fuck finish to boot. Rated 2.1 on Cagematch.

    1. I've got that on the list for the future. Thanks for the suggestion!

  2. New Jack also stated on Darkside of the Ring that before the match happened he heard Vic brag about hurting him and it was the motivation for buying the taser. Rob Black also gave New Jack a big payday for the stunt he pulled and New Jack decided to leave XPW after that feeling that he got even with Vic Grimes. It was an honor to make this match the first for your Tier 2 section!

My next request is another AJPW match which is
Andre the Giant and Giant Baba vs Dick Slater and Joel Deaton (Real World Tag League - Day 1 Nov 15 1990)

    1. I'll add it to the list. Andre was really broken down even at WrestleMania 3, so I can't imagine how rough watching him wrestle three years later would be. Thanks for the suggestion!

Have you done that infamous Stardom match? Yoshiko and Act Yasukawa?

    1. Hey EYD, the Ghastly match did get recommended earlier by someone else. I think CJ talked about that being another Tier 2 match, along with the Mike Levy incident.

    2. Ah, yeah makes sense. It's too infamous of a match not to get mentioned. What about the Rosemary injury one?

    3. I do recall the match from Triplemania XXV being suggested. That will possibly be another red font match.

    1. I believe it may be his match against Sting at StarrCade '90. The Black Scorpion in a Steel Cage match. That's at least what the ProFight database says.

    2. That's probably it, at least in terms of singles matches. But even then, most Flair's matches during his prime are pretty well recieved (either from Meltzer or Cagematch)

  6. I remember one of the Wrestlecrap guys inducted New Jack vs Vic Grimes and talked about their theory that the attempted murder story is just kayfabe. I'd link the article but it looks like it's currently lost with them remodeling again.

From what I can remember, he lists New Jack and Grimes having 2 more matches after the ECW match, both finishing without a problem (well, about as well as a New Jack match can go)

He then focuses on Grimes' goofy reaction to getting tased followed by jumping off the scaffolding like someone with training would

Wrestlecrap is the only place where I've heard this story suggested to be kayfabe so I can't say it totally disproves it but I still find it interesting. Either way, it's a fact that Grimes barely escaped death

    1. I've seen that and it's definitely possible (it's a business built on working the fans, after all) but just how dangerous that bump was feels way too dangerous. Taking a fall like that and aiming for the ropes (if it is a work) feels way too high-risk to be planned, in my opinion. But yeah, it is entirely possible.

  8. According to Dark Side of the Ring, XPW committed straight up fraud by doctoring a phony certificate of approval when asked for proof of insurance for the scaffold (which they also lied about, claiming it was only meant for the camera crew)

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
