Worst in the World: Tyson Fury vs Braun Strowman-Crown Jewel 2019

(NOTE: Merry Christmas everyone! Now, obviously, this is a week late and not what I had teased in the last post. I had a lot of schoolwork that needed to be done and things kind of got away from me. At the same time, I wasn't able to sign up for Impact Plus (the payment wouldn't go through, for some reason) so I decided to change course until I get that sorted out. Once I can figure that out, that match will be covered here. But as a make-up for missing an entire week, I'll be uploading another entry tomorrow as well. So, with that said, onto the post!)
The bar for celebrity wrestling matches has gone up considerably in the last few years. Once a pretty blatant piece of publicity that would contribute decent at best and horrible at worst (I'm looking at you, Jenna Morasca), the last few years have seen some non-wrestlers step in the ring and put on some legitimately good matches. Whether they be fun watches like Johnny Knoxville vs Sami Zayn or Shaquille O'Neal teaming up with Jade Cargill to face Cody Rhodes & Red Velvet, some standout performances from Bad Bunny and Pat McAfee (his match with Vince McMahon being the exception), or Logan Paul being annoyingly fantastic at this, celebrity wrestling has come a long way from guys like Dennis Rodman stinking up the joint. That being said, there's still been some bad matches involving people famous outside of wrestling, and the 2019 edition of Crown Jewel might have had the worst in recent memory.
WWE's fourth pay-per-view held as part of their 10-year deal with Saudi Arabia actually featured not one, but two of these kinds of matches. Granted, Cain Velasquez, who wrestled Brock Lesnar, had begun a career in professional wrestling after retiring from MMA and before he signed with WWE, but even in 2019, Velasquez was definitely still more well-known for his 13-year MMA career than his two matches in Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. I've already covered that match, so for this entry, let's venture three matches down the card to the other celebrity match, which saw Braun Strowman take on undefeated boxer Tyson Fury. The match came about on the 20th-anniversary episode of SmackDown (also the show's premiere on Fox.) Fury, who was seated at ringside, had a confrontation with Strowman, who tossed Dolph Ziggler into the barricade where he was seated and knocked him down. Fury would hop the barricade to go after Strowman after the match, but security prevented a fight. The two would brawl on the following episode of Raw before a match between the two was set for Crown Jewel.
This was a big get for WWE from a publicity standpoint, as while boxing has taken a noticeable backseat to MMA in terms of popularity amongst combat sports, boxing is still a big draw, and Fury is one of the most prominent names in the sport currently. However, from an in-ring standpoint, the match fell very flat. Celebrity matches work best when the person in the ring with them can get the most out of a limited opponent. I don't think Braun Strowman is horrible in the ring, but in terms of actually leading someone inexperienced in Fury, he's not that guy. As such, the match earned a DUD (zero stars) rating from Dave Meltzer, and holds just a 0.43 out of 10 rating on Cagematch.net, putting it at #10 on the worst-rated matches on the site. Is it really that bad? Let's take a look.
Tyson Fury has one of the most comedically over-the-top entrances you will ever see on a wrestling show. He gets nearly a minute and a half of pyro, laser lights, a lift from under the stage, and even a song change before he's even started walking down the ramp. It's insane. The match starts with a lock-up, which Strowman pushes out of. Another lock-up sees Strowman push Fury into the corner before shoving him. Another lock-up is broken when Strowman tries to throw punches at Fury, who dodges each one before landing two body shots. Yet another lock-up, but Strowman quickly turns it into a wristlock. Fury rolls out of it before doing a kip-up that Strowman is helping a lot with and slapping on a headlock. Strowman pushes out, but Fury comes back with a shoulder block. Strowman stumbles back into the ropes, rebounds off them, and knocks Fury off his feet with a big boot. Strowman stomps & clubs away at Fury before hitting a headbutt. Strowman drags Fury into the corner, beating him down with shoulder blocks before running to the opposite corner to hit a running shoulder block. Fury, however, runs out of the way, sending Strowman through the ropes to the outside.
Fury follows Strowman out of the ring, only for Strowman to ram him into the ring apron before clocking him with a right hand. Strowman does a full lap around the ring as he goes for a shoulder block, but Fury catches him with a dropkick. Fury throws Strowman back into the ring and goes for a right hand, but Strowman dodges it and picks him up for the running powerslam. Fury slips out, however, and sends Strowman into the ropes with a drop toe-hold. Fury follows up with a pretty nice big boot and goes for the cover, but Strowman kicks out at two. Strowman regains control, rushing Fury into the corner before clubbing him to the ground. Tyson Fury then does the Undertaker sit-up for some reason, but Strowman quickly boots him back down. Fury stumbles up the corner as Strowman charges him again, only for Fury to catch him with a boot of his own. Fury goes for a crossbody, but Strowman catches him and slams him down, causing Fury to roll out of the ring. Strowman calls for the charging shoulder block and hits it, knocking Fury down. Strowman, clearly forgetting about the rule of threes, rolls Fury back into the ring, only for Fury to pop up and clock him with a right hand as he gets on the apron. Strowman stumbles and can't get into the ring as the referee counts him out, giving Fury the win. After the match, Strowman quickly lays out Fury with a powerslam, which Fury sells for about 13 seconds before popping right back up. He got paid $15 million to do that.

The Verdict

Nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be or as the rating suggests, this is really just a mediocre match. Fury is far from the worst celebrity wrestler I've ever seen, but outside of a few nice spots, he really didn't do much. It's still a far better match than the Lesnar-Velasquez match from earlier in the show, but this is still not really worth watching.

  1. I'll be honest, I was a bit shocked with the rating for this match. I've watched the match myself, and it wasn't nearly as bad as Cagematch says. I do agree that it's not exactly great though.

From what I hear, the Shotzi/Rousey match from this year's Survivor Series was boring (I haven't watched the show yet). Any chance we'll have that?

    1. Yeah, I was surprised by that rating too. Like, it's not good, but there's no way it's worse than Goldberg vs Taker.
And yeah, the Shotzi/Ronda match was rough. Shotzi's pretty hit or miss and Ronda really needs the right opponent (someone like Charlotte or Sasha) to have a good match. It's a mess and now that I've gotten this comment, I'll definitely look at it in the future.

    2. Ronda was pretty good in 2018-2019 heck she gave Nia Jax of all people a couple of great matches, but for some reason she seems more sluggish and awkward her only best match was with Charlotte at Backlash.

      Delete
    3. That match with Nia was a pleasant surprise. I don't know if it's just the quality of people she's put in the ring with this time around, but her matches have been noticeably worse since her return.

      Delete
    4. It was I didn't expect anything great but after it was over color me surprised. they really have as you've seen with the Shotzi match and the matches with Liv Morgan were bleh .

      Delete
    5. The thing is Nia with her reputation of hurting people and Ronda with her UFC Background, yeah that match wasn't much of a problem for those two.

      Merry Christmas also brother

    6. When you put it like that yeah mabye it wasn't a problem for them.

      Merry late Christmas brother

  2. It wouldn't happen to be a certain shark cage match would it? Good review as always, even though I still think the match was bland atleast I would rather see Tyson Fury wrestle then lets say Jenna Morasca.

The next match request comes from Saturday Nights Main Event on Mon April 15th 1991, what happens when you put two former WWE champions against each other when both are mediocre at best you get The Ultimate Warrior vs Sgt Slaughter.

    You have a Merry Christmas!

    1. I'll add it to the list. I've only ever seen Warrior & Slaughter's Royal Rumble match so this will be a new watch for me. Thanks for the suggestion & Merry Christmas!

    2. The match itself was giving a -1 rating from Meltzer. You're welcome and thank you!

    3. For some reason the Internet Wrestling Database lists it for April 15th 1991 but the WWE Network lists it for April 27 1991

    4. I think the Database lists the day it was taped and the Network lists the day it aired.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
