Worst in the World: Gunner vs Garett Bischoff-TNA Against All Odds 2012

Rest in Peace, Don West, one of the voices of TNA whose enthusiasm, energy, and passion was unmatched.

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)

Nepotism. Defined as "the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives, friends, or associates, especially by giving them jobs", a "nepotism baby" or a "nepo baby" refers to someone who has famous or prominent parents in a certain field that then also pursued a career in that field. Nepotism babies are everywhere, whether it be film, television, music, politics, and even sports. Professional wrestling is no different, as there have been plenty of wrestlers to follow in their parents footsteps. Hell, the top stable in WWE right now, The Bloodline, is made up almost entirely of nepotism babies, with the son of Headshrinker Sika as the leader, and the three sons of Rikishi under him (not to mention Sami Zayn grew up in an orphanage run by former Ring of Honor star El Generico.) This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as children of famous wrestlers can obviously go on to have lengthy, successful, and entertaining careers (like the aforementioned Bloodline), but there are also plenty of examples of people who have gotten a lot farther in the business than they should have, all because they already had a foot in the door thanks to their parent. The go-to example of a nepotism baby in wrestling tends to be Erik Watts, the son of former WCW booker Cowboy Bill Watts who received no shortage of pushes while his dad was booking the show, despite doing stuff like this. However, if you're looking for a more modern example, look no further than Garett Bischoff.
Garett, the son of former WCW vice president & then-TNA executive producer Eric Bischoff, first popped up in TNA in 2010 as referee Jackson James, a secret member of the heel Immortal stable his father co-led with Hulk Hogan. Less than a year later at Bound For Glory 2011, he'd be revealed as Eric's son and was kicked out of Immortal when he fairly officiated Sting & Hulk Hogan's match. Now a wrestler, a very green Garett entered into a feud with his father. Genuinely, his first match on Impact was his first match ever, according to Cagematch, so any polishing of his skills was going to have to be done on the job. Despite his inexperience, TNA made sure to feature Garett prominently, almost certainly because of that last name and who was producing the show. The Bischoff vs Bischoff feud concluded at Lockdown 2012 in the Lethal Lockdown match where, on a team featuring four of the company's top stars in AJ Styles, Austin Aries, Mr. Anderson, and Rob Van Dam, GARETT BISCHOFF was the team's leader. After Garett's team won and Eric (per the added "Loser Leaves TNA" stipulation) was sent packing on screen, Garett stayed in a top storyline when he joined the Aces & Eights in 2013, but nothing significant really came out of that before the group disbanded later that year. While I can't confirm anything, it's worth noting that the end of Garett's presence on television happened around the same time his father had been sent home by TNA to sit out the rest of his contract as a producer. Garett would be gone from the company in 2015 after not appearing for over a year.
In the end, Garett has gone down as one of the biggest examples of nepotism in wrestling, and a run that produced just a single pay-per-view singles match. That being his match with Gunner (the future Jaxson Ryker in WWE) from Against All Odds 2012. As part of the Bischoff family feud, Garett also started feuding with Eric's Immortal stablemate/new son(?) Gunner, wrestling the first three matches of his career against him and winning all three (one by DQ, two by pinfall) before Gunner kayfabe injured him with a piledriver on the exposed floor. Garett returned a month later to set up yet another match between the two at Against All Odds. A now-babyface Hulk Hogan was also revealed as Garett's trainer/new dad(?), and he'd be in Garett's corner for the match while Eric accompanied Gunner to the ring. Let's find out why El Hijo del Eric Bischoff was relegated to tag matches on pay-per-view for the rest of his career.
Garett Bischoff has some obscene sideburns:
I just had to get that out of the way. Also, not only does Garett come out to Hulk Hogan's music, but he is introduced before Hogan. Pushing Garett well beyond his abilities so early in his career was always going to make getting him over an uphill battle, but doing stuff like that probably didn't help either. Before the match starts, Gunner offers Hogan a towel to throw in for Garett. The match starts with Gunner shoving Garett twice. A third shove attempt sees Garett counter with a judo throw before hitting an arm drag followed by a dropkick. Another lock-up sees Gunner take Garett down with a waistlock before slapping him in the back of the head a bunch. Garett fires back with punches before taking Gunner down with another arm drag. Garett slaps on an armbar, working the arm for a while before Gunner breaks the hold with a headbutt. Gunner follows up with another headbutt before dragging Garett's face across the top rope.
Garett fires back with punches, but Gunner shuts down the comeback with a punch to the gut. Garett tries to fire up again with even more punches, but he gets tripped by his father when he hits the ropes, allowing Gunner to hit a double chop to Garett's throat. Gunner goes for a gorilla press slam, but Garett slips out and, after ducking a clothesline, hits a flying forearm. Garett follows up with a backslide for a two-count before taking Gunner down with a drop-toe hold. Garett slaps on a headlock, only for Gunner to power out and push Garett into the corner. Gunner charges at him, but Garett dodges and rolls him up for another two count before hitting an inverted atomic drop. Gunner retreats into the corner, luring Garett in so he can throw him face-first into the turnbuckle. Gunner follows up with a clothesline to the back before hitting an elbow to the back of the head for a two-count. Garett tries to fight back with more punches, but Gunner keeps control by choking him against the ropes. Gunner stomps away at Garett, who tries to fight back with even more punches. Garett is definitely wrestling like someone in the six months of their career in this match.
Gunner shuts down the comeback attempt with a knee to the gut before locking in a neck crank. Gunner continues working, hitting a nice slingshot suplex for a two-count, but Garett makes a comeback with a cool little twisting flapjack. The two trade blows before Gunner hits a nice spinning neckbreaker. Gunner starts choking Garett against the ropes before distracting referee Earl Hebner, allowing Eric to slap Garett. Hogan has seen enough, as he walks and clocks Eric. Meanwhile, Garett gets another two count off a roll-up, only for Gunner to catch him with a knee lift. Gunner follows up with a neckbreaker before continuing to target Garett's neck with stomps & elbow drops. Gunner goes for another neckbreaker, but Garett blocks it by grabbing the ropes. This brings us to a spot that probably should've gone before Garett countered the neckbreaker, as Hogan grabs the towel and contemplates throwing it in and ending the match. Garett waves him off, only to walk right in a snap DDT from Gunner who gets the three and the win.

The Verdict

Outside of a couple nice spots, not a very interesting match. Garett's inexperience really shows in this match, as he really doesn't do anything outside of punches and basic wrestling moves. It also doesn't help that this match is almost 13 minutes long, so the basic nature of the match stands out even more. It's far from the worst match I've ever seen, but it's still not really worth watching.

  1. I can't wait to see the review of my first request, another good review/analysis as always man!

My next request is Big Bossman vs Nailz (Survivor Series 1992)

    1. I'll add it to the list. For someone whose peak years of popularity were very brief, Nailz has found his way onto the series a lot. Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. You're welcome! Well to be honest, considering how Nailz wrestles and his boatload of awful matches he's a perfect regular for your series.

  2. Do you every seen a bad Kenny omega or the young bucks match?

    1. Hey, so a while back I had gone down this rabbit hole myself, thinking "What are the worst matches of some of the best wrestlers?" As for Matt and Nick Jackson, not many notable blunders of matches from them...at least under those names. They didn't have the greatest of runs in TNA as Max and Jeremy Buck, including a rather mediocre match against Eric Young and Shark Boy at Destination X in 2011 (only 1.25 stars on the Meltzer Meter). As for Kenny Omega, there aren't many matches that could classify as "bad" but there is definitely one that will be on here eventually once CJ has a chance to review it: Omega vs Toru Yano at NJPW G1 Climax 2017.

    2. I do plan on covering the Omega/Yano match. I'll have to take a look at the Bucks vs EY & Shark Boy match. 1.25 isn't the worst rating, but for the Bucks to get that low of rating from Meltzer is pretty rare (granted, this would've been pre-New Japan, but they were still getting pretty good ratings from Meltzer in ROH & Dragon Gate). Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. Ah, the absolute mess that was TNA in the Hogan-Bischoff era. Always a lovely time to scrutinize.

Oh, and I am going to offer a wild suggestion for a future installment: Jon Moxley vs CM Punk. Not the All Out one, the Dynamite one. I feel that one falls under the veil of "Marquee Matchups That Failed Expectations" like a Fingerpoke of Doom situation.

    1. That run is probably the main reason why AEW never offered Hogan/Bischoff contracts.

That match was pretty bad especially since it didn't make sense to put it out for free on Dynamite when All Out was near and the fact it was a squash no less.

      Delete
    2. I'll take a look at it. I haven't watched it since it happened but I do remember that being a very divisive. Thanks for the suggestion!

    3. I think Tony Khan has outright said AEW would never work with Hogan because of his racist comments, so I don't know about him. Bischoff did make a couple of one-off appearances in AEW, but going off of Bischoff's comments about the company lately, that relationship is probably not good right now.
But as for working behind the scenes, this storyline (and their whole presence in TNA, really) probably played a part.

  4. I got another AJPW request for you!

    1. I'll add it to the list. I'm always interested in looking at more All Japan. Also, I'm a big horror fan, so it'll be cool to check out a match from the guy who played Michael Myers in the Rob Zombie Halloween movies (Nitron aka Tyler Mane.) Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. Wait a minute, Nitron was Michael Myers! And here I thought he was just a random wrestler most people (myself included) would forget the next day.

  5. What do you think of the Uncle Howdy storyline btween Bray Wyatt/LA Knight/Alexa Bliss and do you think the Pitch Black Match will be bad?

I got a request from This Tuesday in Texas (Randy Savage vs Jake Roberts)

    1. I'm not entirely sure what to think right now. It was interesting at first, but until recently it felt like there wasn't much progression. The Pitch Black match is kind of a "wait and see" situation for me depending on what it actually is.
Also, I'll add Savage vs Roberts to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. Yeah same here, I kind of wish they had went a little all out with the storyline which I hope happens after the Rumble. According to LA Knight from what he was told it was like a street fight in the dark , but I do agree that the Pitch Black match is something I have to wait and see to decide if it's good or not.

  6. It sucks to hear about Jay Briscoe, he was taken from us way to soon! Have the Briscoes ever had a bad match you might recall?

My next request is all the way back to the Survivor Series 1993 PPV and the match is the main event (Team Lex Luger vs Team Yokozuna)

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
