Worst in the World: The Rock's 25th Anniversary/Pizza Hut Triple Treat Box Battle Royal-Survivor Series 2021

Rest in peace, Jay Briscoe. My condolences are with his family.

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)

At the 1996 edition of Survivor Series, the WWF audience witnessed the debut of a new wrestler. The debut of the son of former WWF Tag Team Champion and future Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, a member of the legendary Anoa'i family, and a member of the 1991 college football National Champion Miami Hurricanes. That wrestler was Rocky Maivia, the man who would go on to be known simply as The Rock. Over the course of his professional wrestling career, The Rock has become an undisputed icon of the business, with 10-world championships to his name, five appearances in the main event of WrestleMania, and an all-but-confirmed spot in the WWE Hall of Fame.  On top of that, The Rock has successfully transitioned from wrestling into the world of film, as he has become one of the highest-grossing actors of all time. With all that in mind, it was only fitting that 25 years later at Survivor Series 2021, the now WWE would celebrate the anniversary of The Rock's debut with a 25-man battle royal. Someone who was seemingly not made aware of this celebration, however, was The Rock himself, because outside of archival footage & a trailer for the movie Red Notice, The Rock does not appear on this show...at all.
In all seriousness, WWE almost certainly reached out to The Rock in regards to appearing on this show. However, as The Rock has gone on to a career outside of the company, he's become something that WWE rarely has to deal with; someone who's bigger than the WWE itself. This is a man whose films have grossed well over $10 billion, had a prominent role in one of the highest-grossing film series of all time, was about to star in two DC films in the lead role, and has an estimated net worth of $800 million. He absolutely does not need the WWE to work. As such, getting The Rock to appear in WWE nowadays is a lot easier said than done given his schedule. It's been over three years since The Rock has appeared on WWE television. Hell, he's technically made an appearance for Impact Wrestling more recently than WWE, albeit in a pre-recorded format he was able to film in his front yard.
But this still begs the question as to why WWE would advertise a "celebration" of a wrestler's anniversary that gonna be there. Sure, WWE and other companies have matches dedicated to wrestlers' legacies, but those are usually tributes to deceased wrestlers, not ones that were just too busy to show up. And it's not like The Rock debuted in a battle royal or was known for winning battle royals. Andre the Giant was known as "The King of Battle Royals" so it makes sense his "memorial" match is a battle royal. But in this case, attaching The Rock's name to this match just feels like an attempt at inflating the prestige of an interband battle royal they had already been doing.
As for the match itself, it really underwhelmed, earning just a one-and-a-quarter star rating from Dave Meltzer, and currently sits at a 2.05 out of 10 rating on Cagematch.net. On a Survivor Series card that was considered a disappointment as a whole, the battle royal stands out as the worst of the bunch. To top it off, what was advertised as a match celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Rock's debut turned into more of an advertisement for...Pizza Hut. Let's take a look.
The participants in this battle royal are as follows:
  1. AJ Styles
  2. Angel (no Garza)
  3. Angelo Dawkins
  4. Apollo Crews
  5. Cedric Alexander
  6. Cesaro
  7. Chad Gable
  8. Commander Azeez
  9. Dolph Ziggler
  10. Drew Gulak
  11. Erik (Raymond Rowe)
  12. Humberto (no Carrillo)
  13. Ivar (Hanson)
  14. Jinder Mahal
  15. Mansoor
  16. Montez Ford
  17. Omos
  18. Otis
  19. R-Truth
  20. Ricochet
  21. Robert Roode
  22. Sami Zayn
  23. Shanky
  24. Shelton Benjamin
  25. T-Bar (the former Donovan Dijak in Ring of Honor, Dominik Dijakovic in NXT, and currently just Dijak)
As with most battle royals, only a handful of the participants get a televised entrance while the rest are just in the ring already. The first entrance we see is Sami Zayn, quickly followed by AJ Styles & Omos making their joint entrance. Ricochet is out next, taking a big whiff of the Pizza Hut Triple Treat boxes that are set up on the stage as he makes his entrance because that's the reason we're actually having this match.
And if you thought that was blatant product placement, just you wait, cause the Street Profits are out next. Not only does Angelo Dawkins come out carrying a Triple Treat Box;
Not only has Montez Ford replaced his red solo cup with a plastic red cup from a dine-in Pizza Hut. Not only does Ford also walk down the ramp proclaiming that "NOBODY OUT PIZZA'S THE HUT!" Not only does Michael Cole read out a description of what you get with the Triple Treat Box. But there is also ANOTHER Triple Treat Box on a table at ringside that the Profits interact with before Dawkins gives his Triple Treat Box to Cole & Corey Graves on commentary.
Just to remind you, this is a battle royal celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Rock's debut.
As soon as the bell rings, AJ Styles accidentally & very obviously eliminates himself by hopping over the top rope and dropping down to the floor.
Corey Graves tries to pass it off that Styles went through the ropes, but it is clear as day that he hopped over the top rope and dropped down. I imagine he just had a complete brain lapse and just forgot what he was doing for a second because despite doing that, he is still considered in the match. Styles hops up on the announce table, cheering on Omos as everyone fights in the ring. The encouragement works, as Omos tosses Drew Gulak, Shelton Benjamin, and Humberto out of the ring in quick fashion. All three of those guys deserve so much better. Hey, has it been about ten seconds since we had Pizza Hut product placement? R-Truth thinks so, as he rolls out under the bottom rope and grabs some pizza from the Triple Treat Box. Truth tries to bribe Omos with pizza, which doesn't faze him. He then tries to bribe Otis, which is successful, as Otis eats the pizza. However, a celebratory pat on the butt causes Otis to flip and toss Truth out of the ring. Otis & Omos then square up, ending with Omos clotheslining Otis Chad Gable laments at his Alpha Academy partner's elimination, which nearly gets him dumped out of the ring by Cesaro. Gable saves himself, however, and slides back into the ring. Gable goes for a monkey flip, but Cesaro blocks it and tries to dump Gable over the top rope. Gable, however, holds on and locks in an armbar over the top rope. Cesaro breaks the hold, however, and finally eliminates Gable with a running European Uppercut. That was a fun little sequence, I enjoyed that. In another fun spot, Ricochet & Mansoor team up to eliminate T-Bar, lifting him onto the top rope before hitting a Poetry in Motion-style dropkick to send him out of the ring. Mansoor picks up another elimination soon after, sending Cedric Alexander out of the ring with headscissors. When you take away the advertising of The Rock for a show he wouldn't show up for and the Pizza Hut product placement, this match is actually pretty fun. Unfortunately, the crowd is more interested in the pizza, loudly chanting "WE WANT PIZZA!"
Angel is the next man to go, taking a straight right from Angelo Dawkins before taking a nasty flat-back bump that the camera doesn't even catch. The Viking Raiders team up to eliminate Jinder Mahal, only for both of them to be tossed out by Shanky. Since there can only be only tall man in this match, Omos & Shanky then started each other down. Shanky grabs Omos by the throat, only for Omos to power out and toss Shanky out of the ring. Meanwhile, the Dirty Dawgs (Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode) double team Mansoor. Mansoor fights back and hits a double dropkick and goes for the elimination with a double clothesline, but both men avoid elimination. Mansoor goes for it again, only for Roode & Ziggler to hit him with a Spinebuster/Zig Zag combo before Roode slingshots him out of the ring for elimination. The Dirty Dawgs turn their attention to Omos, only for Omos to easily eliminate Roode. Ziggler tries to talk his way out of the situation, only for Styles to fly into the ring and hit him with a Phenomenal Forearm, tossing him out of the ring right after. With six Raw and three SmackDown wrestlers left, Sami Zayn gathers his fellow SmackDown members Cesaro & Ricochet to try to team up. It doesn't work, as Cesaro uppercuts Zayn before Ricochet hits him with the Recoil (a single-knee facebreaker or Codebreaker.) The Street Profits pick up the pieces and toss Zayn out of the ring right after.
Cesaro & Ricochet team up to try to eliminate Montez Ford, but Dawkins makes the save for his teammate. Meanwhile, Commander Azeez tries to eliminate Styles, only for Omos to make the save and clothesline Azeez out of the ring. Styles leans over the ropes to taunt Azeez, only for Azeez to grab his arm and try to pull him out. Omos grabs Styles' legs to pull him back in, having a fun little tug-of-war spot until Cesaro & Apollo Crews hit him from behind, causing him to let go and for Azeez to pull Styles out of the ring. Crews pleads with Omos, only to be tossed out of the ring & eliminated quickly. It's down to the final five of Omos, Ricochet, Ford, Dawkins, and Cesaro. The four non-giant competitors quadruple-team Omos, with Ricochet & Ford hitting a double dropkick followed by a shoulder block from Dawkins and a running European Uppercut from Cesaro. Cesaro & Dawkins try to tip Omos out of the ring, but Omos powers out and tosses both men out of the ring. Ford slaps Omos twice, but gets tossed out of the ring soon after, leaving Omos & Ricochet as the final two. Ricochet hits a dropkick and takes the fight to Omos, who quickly shoves him into the ropes. Omos charges, but Ricochet pulls the ropes down and tries to tip him out. Omos, however, powers out and tosses Ricochet out of the ring for the win, with 12 eliminations to his name.
Styles hops into the ring to celebrate and goes to grab the Triple Treat Box from ringside to further celebrate, only for sore loser Ford to hit him with an enziguri. Ford then grabs the pizza, tossing slices into the crowd before grabbing the box and running up the ramp, alongside Dawkins. Ford throws more pizza (and even a breadstick) before he & Dawkins eat pizza to close out the segment.

The Verdict

As I said, if you remove the branding of "The Rock's 25th Anniversary" and the Pizza Hut tie-in, this match is pretty alright. It's obviously nothing special, but there are a couple of fun spots. And unlike the Zombie Lumberjack match, the product placement doesn't impact the match anywhere near as much. This is going toward the top of the list.

In two weeks, I've got a big one in store, as I'll be taking a look at seven matches from the SuperClash III, largely considered the show that ruined the AWA. Stay tuned.

  1. Another fun review as always! You do make a valid point that the battle royal's product placement is atleast isn't too in your face like the zombie lumberjack match was. But you got to wonder after Ford was tossing pizzas in the crowd who would eat it after he was touching a majority of the wrestlers who were likely sweating and after we got through the COVID-19 Pandemic. I wouldn't be surprised if WWE management got alot of laundry/dry cleaning bills afterwards lol.

My next requests are the two casket matches between The Undertaker/Yokozuna

    1. This request made me look over WWE's history of casket matches and there's been quite a few bad rated ones. Along with those two, I think I might expand that to a couple more for a post around Halloween. Thanks for the suggestion!

  2. What is the worst jay briscoe match you need to covered?

  3. You should consider the New York portion of WrestleMania 2. The majority of the card is terrible but at least the other two cities got one redeemable match. NYC got the short end of the stick with a boxing match main event with Mr T, a Jake Roberts squash, a George Steele match and a disappointing Orndorff/Muraco opener.

    1. Just so you know, CJ already reviewed the Boxing Match

    2. Oh sorry, my bad. I guess I was in a mood to make a creative suggestion that I overlooked the main event.

OK, maybe I should suggest adding another Hogan match to the list. The Mega-Maniacs vs Money Inc. at WM IX. The steel mask, the faces doing the cheating and Jimmy Hart conveniently having a reverse referee jacket which is still not enough for a title change is a complete waste of 20 minutes.

    3. We're cool, I just wanted to let you know that was all!

Honestly any matches on Wrestlemania 9 and Wrestlemania 2 would make great inductions to Worst in the World considering they both are candidates for Worst Wrestlemania of all time for a reason.

    4. I have already covered the Boxing match. I did a full review of WrestleMania 2 as a whole a while back, but it doesn't cover the matches as in-depth as I do on Worst in the World. There's a couple of other matches from Mania 2 outside of the New York portion I've had my eye on, so I might include those along with the New York ones. Thanks for the suggestion!

    5. I'll also cover the Mega-Maniacs/Money Inc. match. I think that would actually be Brutus Beefcake's first non-World War 3 match in the series.

  4. Well Hulk Hogan made a clown of himself on twitter recently so I have a new request dedicated to him and thats his match against Vader at Uncensored (1995)

    1. This request reminded me that I've never actually covered the Yapapi Strap match between Hogan & Ric Flair from Uncensored 2000, so I might do a double with both of those. Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. I looked up reviews of the Yapapi Strap Match it does not sound like a fun time for any reviewer lol! You're welcome man!

  5. I got a match request from Uncensored 1996
    DDP vs The Booty Man

    1. I'll add it to the list. I don't think I've covered much pre-People's Champ DDP (if any) and I can't pass on an opportunity to talk about yet another bad Ed Leslie gimmick. Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. You're Welcome! Honestly if Ed Leslie wasn't Hogans friend he would not of lasted long in WWE or WCW

  6. Well the Pitch Black Match happened and all I can say is that in my opinion it was alright. It wasn't Firefly Inferno levels of good but it wasn't House of Horrors levels of bad. I just wish Wyatt's first match wasn't just for the sake of product placement I think it should of been a falls count anywhere match.

My next request goes to the heatless world title match at Wrestlemania 13 between Undertaker/Sycho Sid

    1. I didn't think it was too bad, it was just kind of unremarkable in my opinion. I'm kind of surprised so many people online hated it as much as they did (it has a 1.90 rating on Cagematch right now.) The product placement is easily the worst part of it. It really takes away from the aura of Wyatt and the story they're trying to tell when he has to wrestle in a Mountain Dew-themed match.
I'll add Taker vs Sid to the list. Pretty funny you used "heatless" considering the show's actual tagline was simply "HEAT!" Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. I was at work and I heard about how bad the matches reception was so I watched it with low expectations but after the match was over I didn't really think it was terrible as many people from Twitter and Cageside Seats were making it out to be. It ain't a Match of the Year contender by any means but I think Bray/LA did the best they could with the gimmicky setting. I just hope WWE never do this match again and they need to stop putting Wyatt in gimmicky matches like this.

That is pretty funny considering Stone Cold/Bret Hart brought the heat more then the main event did since the crowd could care less about the match besides Taker winning the belt so I figured heatless was a fitting way to describe the match. You're welcome man!

    1. That's one that's long overdue and I'll definitely add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

  8. I actually got a request to cover a couple of matches from Bash at the Beach '99, and the Junkyard Invitational is definitely going to be included in that.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
