Worst in the World: Candice LeRae vs. Christina Von Eerie-PWG DIO!

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
On July 3, 2022, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla held their Nineteen event. Among the six-match card was a match pitting Masha Slamovich against Yuka Sakazaki. At first glance, this doesn't seem too out of place on an independent show, as Slamovich is one of the most popular women in the scene right now, and Sakazaki's work in Japan makes her an excellent fit for the company. For PWG, however, this match was highly significant, as it was the first straight-up women's match to take place in the company in over 12 years. Founded in 2003 by a group of Southern California-based independent wrestlers Super Dragon, current AEW commentator Excalibur, Disco Machine, Scott Lost, Top Gun Talwar, and nobody else, PWG was way ahead of the times, as the high work-rate style of the company would become the norm throughout the independent scene, a style that even WWE would begin to adapt in NXT. However, in regard to women's wrestling, the opposite happened, as even as women's wrestling was becoming more prominent on the independent scene, promotions like World Wonder Ring Stardom and Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling forming in Japan, and even WWE's attitude towards it changing significantly and giving it more respect in the mainstream, PWG stayed behind the times. What caused women's wrestling to become pretty much non-existent in PWG? One match, apparently.
Rewind back to June 11, 2010, and PWG held DIO!, which featured a match between Candice LeRae and Christina Von Eerie, the last all-women's match in PWG for over 12 years. LeRae is seven years into her career at this point, and is just a few years away from becoming one of the most prominent women in the independents, leading to her eventually joining the WWE in 2018. Von Eerie debuted in 2006, and is a few months away from signing with TNA and debuting the following year as Toxxin, the tattoo artist & valet of tag team Ink Inc. (Shannon Moore & Jesse Neal.) LeRae & Von Eerie had shared the ring multiple times since 2009 in both singles and tag matches, and DIO! would be the blowoff to their feud. However, the match seems to have disappointed, so much so that it apparently soured Super Dragon (who is now the booker & co-owner of the company with Excalibur) on women's wrestling for over a decade. Interestingly, this match clearly didn't sour the company on LeRae, who would continue to work in PWG for years after this match, even winning the PWG World Tag Team Championships from the Young Bucks by herself.
Let's get into this.
LeRae extends a hand to Von Eerie at the start of the match, but Von Eerie rebuffs it...only to immediately shake her hand right after. Off to a weird start. The opening lock-up sees Von Eerie take LeRae down to the mat, but LeRae rolls over and takes advantage, mounting Von Eerie and hitting her with forearms. The two get back to their feet, where Von Eerie takes it back to the mat with a waistlock takedown. Von Eerie locks in a front facelock, but LeRae fights to her feet and counters it into a wristlock. Von Eerie reverses it, flipping around to lock in a wristlock of her own. Von Eerie continues working the arm until LeRae breaks the hold with an arm drag followed by some forearms that don't look great. However, Von Eerie keeps control when LeRae throws a forearm so high that she doesn't even have to duck before hitting an atomic drop.
Von Eerie follows up with a step-up enziguri, sending LeRae out of the ring to sit on top of a fan. LeRae quickly gets back in the ring for another lock-up. The two trade wristlocks before Von Eerie runs up the ropes and hits a diving arm drag, sending LeRae back out of the ring. Von Eerie then catches her with a baseball slide, which sends LeRae back into the same fan from before. Von Eerie follows her out to get her back in the ring, but LeRae grabs onto the fan to stop that. I was not expecting this random man to be such a central part of this match early on. LeRae catches Von Eerie with a back elbow, but Von Eerie keeps control with a forearm followed by a chop and a headbutt. Von Eerie rolls LeRae back in the ring and goes to the top rope, but LeRae knocks her and puts her in the Tree of Woe, following up with a dropkick for a two count. LeRae goes for a double underhook move, but Von Eerie blocks it, only for LeRae to catch her with a knee. LeRae locks in a chinlock, but Von Eerie breaks it with a jawbreaker. Von Eerie then picks LeRae up in sidewalk slam style, lifts her onto her shoulders, and hits Snake Eyes in a cool little sequence.
Unfortunately, that's followed up by Von Eerie going for a springboard clothesline, which LeRae counters and throws Von Eerie down to the mat in a clunky sequence. LeRae follows up with a senton for a two count before going for a suplex. Von Eerie blocks it twice, but LeRae completes in on the third attempt for another two count. LeRae goes for another suplex, but Von Eerie slips out and rolls up LeRae for a two-count of her own. LeRae slaps on a waistlock, but Von Eerie runs towards the ropes and ducks, sending LeRae flying out of the ring. Von Eerie follows her out, but LeRae takes control by shoulder blocking Von Eerie in the gut. LeRae instructs a group of fans to move, freeing up a group of chairs, and goes to whip Von Eerie into them, but Von Eerie counters and drop toe-holds LeRae, sending her face first into a chair. Von Eerie follows up with an uppercut before throwing LeRae back into the ring. LeRae, however, rushes her as she steps between the ropes before hitting a neckbreaker, pulling Von Eerie into the ropes and sending her back down to ringside. LeRae follows up with a big suicide dive, sending both women into the front row of chairs.
LeRae throws Von Eerie back into the ring for a two-count before going for a swinging neckbreaker, but Von Eerie counters and throws LeRae down with a nice wristlock slam. Von Eerie follows back with a boot to the face and a facebuster, but LeRae kicks out. Von Eerie follows up with a forearm and a chop before both women go down on a double crossbody. Von Eerie keeps control with forearms until LeRae fires back with a cool wheelbarrow stunner, but Von Eerie kicks out. LeRae tries to follow up with a backslide, but Von Eerie rolls over, lands on her feet, and hits a Pedigree (they call it that on commentary), but LeRae kicks out. Von Eerie drags LeRae towards the corner and goes to the second rope, but LeRae pops up and hits the Balls-plex (a German suplex where she lifts her opponent from below the belt and yes, that's what it's called.) LeRae follows up with a top rope moonsault for the three and the win.

The Verdict

There are some undeniably clunky moments, but overall I don't think this match is all that bad. The first half is pretty forgettable, but the second half is a pretty fun watch. In short, this is going pretty high on the list.

  1. I looked up the Destination X PPV from 2006 on wiki but there was no casket like match? Are you talking about Sting vs Abyss from the 2007 Destination X?

I got a few match requests from the 2007 Vengeance PPV
Santino Marella vs Umanga -1 stars
    Deuce/Domino vs Sgt Slaughter/Jimmy Snuka -1 stars

  2. Since you plan on covering Hulk Hogan/Ric Flairs Uncensored 2000 match do you plan on covering their Uncensored 1999 match namely because the rules keep changing and despite the fact it couldn't end on pinfalls/submissions it still ended via pinfall in typical WCW fasion.

Abyss vs AJ Styles while wrestling wise it's good however the silly storyline, overbooking and a shitty finish lead to a pretty disappointing main event.

    1. I'll add it to the list. It'll be fun to look back at TNA's horribly miscasting Styles as the "New Nature Boy." Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. Yeah man TNA trying to turn AJ Styles into the new Ric Flair was a big mistake and Abyss getting the superpowers of Hulk Hogan via his HOF ring was just to silly to take seriously

  7. There's a couple of match requests from Wrestlemania 28 I have in mind especially since one of them is overdue and is in my opinion Daniel Bryan's worst match due to how short it is.

    Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus
    Team Johnny vs Team Teddy

  10. Do you plan on covering the 2014 Royal Rumble match?

  11. Heres a clash of the titans gone wrong

Ryback vs Big Show (Money in the Bank 2015)

    1. Honestly, the only thing I remember from that match (and that feud) was that they had Ryback hit Shell Shocked on Big Show on the go-home Raw, even though whether or not he could hit it on someone Show's size was the only interesting part of the match. I'll add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. That is weird they didn't save that moment for Money in the Bank and just wasted it on an episode of Raw

  12. Heres a Wrestlemania match request that likewise should of ended beautifully but all the build up and the matches existence became meaningless before the wedding happened!

    John Cena/Nikki Bella vs Miz/Maryse (Wrestlemania 33)

    1. That's one I've got on the list as part of Cena vs Miz centered post (essentially a feud WWE tried multiple times to make work that just didn't.) Thanks for the suggestion!

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
