Worst in the World: SuperClash III: The Show That Ruined The AWA

The mid to late 1980s were not kind to the American Wrestling Association. As Hulk Hogan & the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection propelled the WWF while WCW was gaining steam behind Ric Flair, the AWA took a noticeable backseat as the territory days were coming to an end. Essentially, the company would become what ECW would be during the Attitude Era and what Ring of Honor would be after that; a third promotion whose talent would get poached by the bigger companies. It was this status that led to the AWA forming a partnership with two other declining promotions, the Jerry Jarrett & Jerry Lawler-owned Championship Wrestling Association (the former Continental Wrestling Association) and Fritz Von Erich's World Class Wrestling Association (the former World Class Championship Wrestling.) With the CWA & WCWA by their side, the AWA looked to make their first venture into the pay-per-view business with SuperClash III, held on December 13, 1988 in Chicago's UIC Pavillion. It would also be the AWA's only venture into the pay-per-view business.
When you look back at the history of the AWA, SuperClash III tends to be singled out as when the company fell into a slump they couldn't recover from. A big reason was that SuperClash was not a financial success, drawing under 1,700 people to the venue (for reference, WCW held their Chi-Town Rumble event in the same venue two months later and drew 8,000 people) and recording just 45,000 buys. It was because of this poor performance that led to AWA owner Verne Gagne not paying the visiting wrestlers. Among those not paid were Jerry Lawler, the man who had just unified the AWA & WCWA World Heavyweight titles on the show. This whole conflict resulted in the quick ending of the partnership between the three promotions, Lawler being stripped of the AWA title, and Lawler never actually returning the physical belt. What was supposed to be the show to launch the AWA back into the wrestling race ended up being the show that further pushed them behind the WWF & WCW, as the promotion would file for bankruptcy in 1991 before Gagne sold the assets to the now-WWE.
So, business aside, how was SuperClash III critically received? Poorly. There are a couple of decently rated matches on the card featuring some solid wrestlers, and if it weren't for the lackluster finish, the title unification match between Jerry Lawler and Kerry Von Erich would probably be remembered a lot more fondly. But as a whole, the card is not good whatsoever. On this 12-match card, only five of the matches have a rating from Dave Meltzer higher than a single star, with four of them having a DUD (zero stars) or lower. The company was already falling behind the WWF &WCW, and wrestling like this was never going to help them gain ground. So, let's take a look back at SuperClash III's worst matches and slowly watch the AWA crumble.

Match #1: Jimmy Valiant vs Wayne Bloom

Kind of like Halloween Havoc 2000, the SuperClash III lures you into a false sense of security by putting on two of its better matches (a 6-man tag match between Chavo, Hector, and Mando Guerrero and the team of Cactus Jack & the Rock 'n' Roll RPMs (Mike Davis & Tommy Lane), and a WCWA Light Heavyweight Championship match between Eric Embry and Jeff Jarrett) on first before giving you shit. The shit starts with the third match on the card, pitting Jimmy Valiant against Wayne Bloom. Valiant's 22 years deep into his career, having left a not-yet-WCW Jim Crockett Promotions earlier in the year, while Bloom is wrestling just his second career match here. Bloom would later go on to be one-half of the Beverly Brothers alongside Mike Enos, and is also the father of current NXT wrestler Von Wagner. This match earned a DUD rating from Meltzer and don't scroll too fast cause this one's gonna be quick.
As Valiant pumps up the crowd, Bloom hits him from behind as soon as the bell rings. Bloom strikes Valiant to the ground before kicking at him. Valiant gets back to his feet as Bloom continues hitting him, only for Valiant to fire back with a punch. Valiant hits two more before hitting a back elbow followed by an elbow drop. Valiant makes the cover and Bloom kicks out at 3.01, giving Valiant the win in 24 seconds.

Match #2: The Dual Championship Six-Person Mixed Tag Match

I'm gonna skip over the following match between Iceman King Parsons and Brickhouse Brown for the WCWA Texas Heavyweight Championship (it doesn't have the worst rating, but if somebody wants me to cover it'll definitely add it to the list for the future) and move on to the fifth match on the card, a six-person mixed tag match, pitting Wendi Richter and the Top Guns (Ricky Rice & Derrick Dukes) against The Diamond Exchange's Madusa Miceli & Badd Company (Paul Diamond & Pat Tanaka), with Richter's AWA World Women's Championship and Badd Company's AWA World Tag Team Championships up for grabs. It's confusing, because the winning team doesn't get all the titles, just the person who got the win walks away with the title they were competing for. The Diamond Exchange is managed by Diamond Dallas Page, prior to him beginning an in-ring career.
Richter is a few years removed from the "Original Screwjob" where she shoot-lost the WWF Women's Championship to a masked-Fabulous Moolah, and had beaten Madusa for the Women's Championship a month prior, while Madusa is still in her rookie year as a wrestler, during which she'd become the first woman to win the PWI Rookie of the Year, and is a few years away from joining WCW and later the WWF. Badd Company are also future WWF wrestlers, both joining the company after leaving the AWA, with the two working as the Orient Express after Tanaka's original partner Akio Sato left. Diamond would play replacement again when he went on to portray the infamous Max Moon gimmick after the original choice Konnan left the company. Finally, the Top Gunns would only team up for a couple of matches before both men embarked on singles careers. This match earned just half a star from Meltzer, let's see if it deserves it.
Before the match, DDP cuts a promo calling Richter's title win the fluke of the century, just like when the Chicago Bears won the Super Bowl. Yeah, fuck you local sports team. The match starts with everyone brawling in the ring. Richter & the Guns take control, Irish whipping all three heels into each other in the middle of the ring. Madusa & Diamond are sent out of the ring before the Guns hit a double jumping back elbow on Tanaka. Dukes follows up with a slingshot shoulder block on Tanaka and makes the cover, but Diamond breaks it up. The Guns hit a double back body drop and Dukes makes the cover, but referee Mike Enos (didn't think I'd be mentioning him twice) is too busy telling Rice to get out of the ring to count the pin. Tanaka ends up kicking out. Dukes slaps a wristlock on Tanaka before hitting a clothesline. Dukes makes the cover, but Diamond again breaks up the fall. Dukes slaps on a headlock before hitting two shoulder blocks and a dropkick for another near fall. The Diamond Exchange finally turns the tables when Diamond catches Dukes with a knee to the back from the apron behind the referee's back.
Diamond stomps away at Dukes before hitting a big sidewalk slam followed by a butterfly suplex for a near fall. Diamond goads Rice into the ring, distracting the referee and allowing Madusa & Tanaka to get cheap shots in on Dukes. Diamond throws Dukes into another corner and goes for a splash, but Dukes avoids it and tags in Richter. Richter tries to drag Madusa into the ring, but Madusa counters and yanks Richter down into the top rope. Madusa follows up with a suplex, but Richter fires back and slams her down by her hair. Richter knocks Diamond off the apron and goes for a dropkick, but Madusa dodges. Richter, however, regains control, sweeping Madusa's legs out from under her before hitting a big powerbomb. Richter makes the cover, but Diamond breaks it up, prompting another brawl between everyone in the ring. The chaos distracts the referee, allowing Madusa to hold Richter in place for Tanaka to hit a savate kick on Richter. A second kick is dodge, however, causing Madusa to get hit. Dukes takes out Tanaka with a dropkick that doesn't look good as Richter makes the cover and gets the three. Madusa sells this for approximately one second before stomp away at Richter. The Guns stop her and hold her in place while they spank her because they're the babyfaces, apparently.
The AWA clearly forgot their own rules, as the ring announcer incorrectly announces that the Guns have won the Tag Team Championships, and the Guns even get handed the belts to celebrate and walk to the back with. At ringside, commentator Lee Marshall (the future WCW commentator and voice of Tony of Tiger) interviews the Diamond Exchange. Madusa & Tanaka argue, ending with Madusa slapping him and walking off. Badd Company & DDP call Madusa a loser and a bimbo as DDP correctly states that Badd Company are still the champions since they never got pinned.

The Verdict

This is actually a pretty decent six-person tag match. I'm surprised this got such a low rating. This is going toward the top of the list.

Match #3: Greg Gagne vs Ron Garvin

Well, it's been a month, let's talk about nepo babies in wrestling again. "Nepo baby" is short for "nepotism baby", which is a label given to the children of famous people in a field that then go into that field and reap the benefits of who their parents are. A month ago I discussed Garett Bischoff, the son of Eric Bischoff, and briefly Erik Watts, the son of Cowboy Bill Watts, as two of the go-to examples of nepo babies in wrestling. Well, if you're looking for an example from the AWA, look no further than Greg Gagne. Obviously, Greg is the son of Verne Gagne, and while the general consensus seems to be that Greg was a decent wrestler and his pushes weren't as egregious as Bischoff's and Watts', it's still pretty clear that he got such a sustained push in the AWA thanks to who owned the company. As such, Greg was well protected in the AWA, winning nearly 70% of his matches and losing under 20% of them (almost 11% were draws.) Once the AWA folded, Greg retired. Here, he faces former NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ron Garvin, who's in between runs with the NWA and the WWF. This match was for the vacant AWA International Television Championship. Garvin had beaten Gagne for the title back in September, only for the title to be vacated due to Garvin using a foreign object. This match earned a single-star rating from Dave Meltzer. Let's get into it.
Bad sign already, Gagne gets booed during the introductions. The two lock up, tussling around the ring before Garvin throws Gagne's head into the top turnbuckle twice. Gagne blocks a third one, however, and chops Garvin before throwing his head into the turnbuckle. Gagne whips Garvin across the ring and charges at him, but Garvin dodges him. Garvin takes Gagne down with a snapmare and locks in a chinlock before dragging him back to the corner and throwing his head into the turnbuckle. Gagne fights back with multiple chops before hitting a back body drop for a two-count. Gagne locks in a chinlock followed by a wristlock, but Garvin breaks the hold with a jumping headbutt. Garvin hits a few more headbutts before whipping Gagne into the ropes. Gagne goes for a sunset flip, but Garvin powers through and sits down on Gagne. Gagne kicks out at two and rolls Garvin over for a two-count of his own.
Gagne takes Garvin down with a less-than-pretty arm drag, putting on a wristlock while they're on the ground. Gagne continues working the arm until Garvin gets to the ropes. Back on their feet, the two exchange slaps & punches before Garvin headbutts Gagne. Garvin strikes away at Gagne before forcing him into the corner and biting his forehead. Gagne fights back with chops before punching him in the corner. Gagne goes for the dropkick, but Garvin avoids it and rolls up Gagne for a near fall. Gagne fires back with a crossbody, causing both men to stumble out of the ring. Garvin throws Gagne into the announce table, and Gagne responds by throwing Garvin into the ring post. Gagne gets back in the ring as the referee delivers the quickest 10 count in history, counting Garvin out and giving the win and the title to Gagne. This gets booed by the crowd. Garvin runs in and locks in a sleeper hold in Gagne, but Gagne breaks it and locks in a sleeper of his own. The official announcement gets more boos. Lee Marshall then interviews Gagne, who stumbles through his promo before completely forgetting what city he's in, saying he's the Minnesota Vikings, Garvin's the Chicago Bears, and the Vikings just steamrolled the Bears. Fuck you local sports team?

The Verdict

The match is pretty bland, with only a handful of moves, and is pretty much just strikes. The finish is also very lackluster, which was apparently because Garvin had already signed with the WWF and wouldn't lose clean. This is a very skippable match.

Match #4: The Lingerie Street Fight Battle Royal

We now move on to the Lingerie Street Fight Battle Royal. This match comes about thanks to another promotion the AWA formed a working relationship with, the Powerful Women of Wrestling (or "POWW", even though that's not how acronyms work.) POWW was the brainchild of David McLane, the founder of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW) who had left the promotion with most of the original cast over disagreements with the direction of the product. POWW is pretty much the exact same thing GLOW was, and what McLane's next promotion, Women of Wrestling (WOW) would become. It is literally this man's sole life goal to get campy, cartoonish women's wrestling over. POWW was not long for this world, beginning in 1987 and closing down in 1990. It's such a blink-and-you'll-miss-it promotion that Cagematch.net doesn't even list it as a promotion. For reference, Wrestling Entertainment Series, the wrestling promotion owned by Gzim Selmani & Sunny Dhinsa (Akam & Rezar, the former Authors of Pain/AOP in WWE) that canceled its first show and has yet to run an event (if they ever will) has a page on the site, but not the one that ran for three years and had a partnership with one of the more prominent promotions in America in the 80s. This match is POWW's only real involvement in the card, and it earned a DUD rating from Meltzer.
The rules of the match are eliminations occur by either being tossed over the top rope or by getting stripped. The participants are as follows:

Yep...there's a woman in this match named The Syrian Terrorist. That's what we're dealing with here. David McLane has joined the commentary table for this match as all the women brawl. Just off the bat, the camera work in this match is ABYSMAL. It never holds on one thing for more than a second before cutting to something else. Think of the worst of Kevin Dunn and his obsession with quick cuts, but even worse. Commentary doesn't help either, just calling random things regardless of if you can see it. McLane calls Luna hitting a neckbreaker on Pocahontas that happens in the background of what's being shown, yelling "DID YOU SEE THAT NECKBREAKER?!" No...no we didn't. Lee Marshall does, however, mention that the referee is either the luckiest or the unluckiest man in the Chicago right now. That referee is once again, Mike Enos. At one point, Luna hits Bambi with her belt. The match is just complete chaos, you can barely follow it. We finally get an elimination when someone (I have no idea who because there are three or four identical blonde women in this match and they never say who) dumps Lori Lynn out of the ring. Women are tearing each other's clothes up & off, and everybody is just rolling around and not doing any actual wrestling. At one point, Luna & Nina roll around and Nina smacks the back of her head on Pocahontas' knees. She then just rolls out of the ring because her clothes got ripped off. This is hell.
One of the identical blonde women eliminates another blonde woman who they never name before Nina gets dumped out of the ring by someone they never name or show. At one point, Bambi punches Peggy Lee Leather while Pali (not calling her it, not even testing it) chop blocks Brandi Mae, which causes all three women to fall over each other. Even with only five people, the camera work is erratic and terrible. We get the first actual move of the match when Bambi hits a hip toss on Peggy Lee while Brandi Mae & Pali catfight on the other side of the ring. Peggy Lee & Bambi fight in the corner, only to get tipped over the top rope by Pali. It's down to the final three of Pali, Brandi Mae, and Luna. Luna goes to the top rope just to get knocked down and out of the ring by Brandi Mae. Pali rolls out of the ring, running from Brandi Mae and prolonging this nightmare of a match. Pali eventually gets back in the ring, where Brandi Mae starts ripping her clothes off, prompting Pali to very visibly laugh. Pali takes off one of her stockings and chokes Brandi Mae with them. Mercifully, Pali ends the match by dumping Brandi Mae over the top rope before kicking her down for the win.

The Verdict

This shit sucked ASS. I don't think there was a single thing in this match that was done right, whether it be from the sloppy, rough-to-watch action, the horrible unfocused camera work, or the useless commentary. This is barely easier to follow than the 1995 World War 3 match, and that is bad company to be in. This is even a worse women's match than Jenna Morasca vs Sharmell. At least with that, I can follow it. This match is unwatchable.

Match #5: Sgt. Slaughter vs Colonel DeBeers

Next up we have the Boot Camp match pitting Sgt. Slaughter against Colonel DeBeers. Slaughter had famously left the WWF in 1984 over disputes regarding Slaughter appearing in a G.I. Joe action figure line (The WWF had a toy deal with LJN while G.I. Joe was owned by Hasbro) and had called the AWA home ever since. DeBeers is a 16-year veteran at this point, and his gimmick is specifically a South African, pro-Aparthied militant. Essentially, his gimmick is that he is extremely racist. So if you've ever played Extreme Warfare Revenge and wondered why "Racist" is a gimmick option, look no further than Colonel DeBeers. Both men have military gimmicks, so what better match for them to face off in than the military-themed Boot Camp match, a no-disqualifications match featuring military gear. Well, the better option might have been for them to not wrestle, as they earned a show-low negative one-star rating from Meltzer. Let's get into this.
DeBeers is out with Diamond Dallas Page as his manager, while Slaughter is the first person I've seen on this show get a televised entrance. DeBeers rushes Slaughter as he gets in the ring, knocking his helmet off his head, but Slaughter takes control with clubbing blows and shots with his riding crop. Slaughter continues beating DeBeers with his crop before knocking him down with a shot, causing DeBeers to land on the helmet, which looks like it really hurt him based on his reaction. DeBeers fights back, hitting Slaughter in the gut with the helmet before stomping him down and throwing him into the corner. DeBeers starts choking Slaughter his belt, eventually grabbing the riding crop and beating him with it. Slaughter fights back with kicks & punches before hitting a snapmare. Slaughter follows up with a stomp and a punch before tossing DeBeers out of the ring. Slaughter follows him out and throws DeBeers into the ring post before going back to punches, but DeBeers takes control by grabbing a rope stanchion post and hitting Slaughter.
DeBeers stomps away at Slaughter before putting on the helmet & headbutting Slaughter in the gut. DeBeers follows up with a running headbutt before DDP picks Slaughter up, holding him in place for another. Slaughter dodges, however, sending DeBeers into DDP off the apron. Slaughter clotheslines DeBeers, knocking the helmet off his head. Slaughter hits DeBeers with the helmet before putting it on himself and hitting four headbutts, the last one knocking DeBeers to the ground with a comedy back bump. Slaughter follows up with a clothesline before locking in the Cobra Clutch. DeBeers fades and the referee calls for the bell, giving Slaughter the win.
As DeBeers passes out, DDP calls for someone from the back, and outcomes Shiek Adnan Al-Kaissey (the future General Adnan in the WWF) to attack Slaughter. Slaughter fights him off, hitting another clothesline before clocking DDP. Slaughter puts Adnan in the Cobra Clutch as DDP calls for another person backstage. DeBeers breaks the hold by hitting Slaughter with the helmet just as the Iron Sheik runs down to the ring. The heels beat down Slaughter, with Sheik hitting him in the head with a spike. Referee Mike Enos (he wasn't even the referee for this match, he just keeps showing up) runs down to try to break it up, only for Sheik to hit him with the spike and toss him out of the ring. Sheik continues spiking Slaughter's forehead before Chavo, Hector, and Mando Guerrero running down to make the save. A bloody Slaughter charges after the heels, chasing them to the back before the Guerreros hold him back. Lee Marshall then interviews Slaughter, saying he'll go to war with anyone for the United States before reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Verdict

I have no idea how Meltzer could give this match a worse rating than the battle royal, let alone a negative rating. I thought this was a pretty fun hardcore match. This is actually going to the top of the list.

Match #6: Wahoo McDaniel vs Manny Fernandez

Following the Boot Camp match, we get a break from the bad matches, as the Samoan Swat Team (Fatu & Samu, the future Headshrinkers in the WWF) retained the WCWA Tag Team Championships against Michael P.S. Hayes & Steve Cox in a fine match. That takes us to the 10th match on the card, an Indian Strap match pitting Wahoo McDaniel against Manny Fernandez, with the winner being the first man to touch the four corners uninterrupted. Wahoo is another longtime veteran of business (26 years) making a run in the AWA at this time, while Fernandez is a former staple of the NWA. This match earned just half a star from Meltzer. Let's get into it.
Before the match, IWGP Heavyweight Champion Tatsumi Fujinami from New Japan Pro-Wrestling is in the ring, causing Fernandez to flip out. He says he's chased Fujinami all over Japan before shoving him. This leads to Fujinami holding Fernandez in place, allowing Wahoo to whip him with the strap. Fernandez retreats from the ring before getting back in to put on the strap. The bell rings, and McDaniel quickly starts whipping Fernandez. Fernandez gets some forearm shots in as Wahoo forces him into the corner, but Wahoo keeps control with more whip shots. Wahoo wraps the strap around Fernandez's neck, takes him down to the mat, and starts choking him. Wahoo follows with a chop and more whip shots, but Fernandez cuts him off with a kick to the gut. Fernandez headbutts Wahoo before hitting a big chop and touching the first corner. Wahoo stops him momentarily, but Fernandez keeps control with a front facelock. Fernandez headbutts Wahoo before dropping a knee and wrapping his fist with the strap. Fernandez punches Wahoo multiple times, busting him open.
Fernandez follows up with a chop and a back elbow before trying to drag Wahoo to each corner. Fernandez touches two, but Wahoo fights to stop him. The two trade blows & chops before Wahoo wraps his fist with the strap, punching Fernandez repeatedly and busting him open. Wahoo continues chopping Fernandez, knocking him to the ground before dragging him and touching the first turnbuckle. Wahoo touches the second and the third, but Fernandez recovers and breaks his progress with a low blow. Fernandez follows up with a fist drop before going to the second rope for a diving knee drop. Fernandez drags Wahoo across the ring to touch three corners, but instead of going for the fourth, he climbs to the top rope. I have no idea why he does this, other than that it was the spot. Wahoo yanks Fernandez down to the mat, dropping two elbows on him right after. Wahoo drags Fernandez from corner to corner, touching three before going for the final one. Fernandez tries to hold on, but Wahoo falls back into the fourth for the win.
Fernandez immediately attacks Wahoo after the match, even tossing seemingly the only referee AWA has in Mike Enos out of the ring when he tries to break it up. Fernandez continues beating down Wahoo until Tatsumi Fujinami runs back out to make the save. Fernandez retreats from the ring as Wahoo gets interviewed by Lee Marshall, where he straight up says he wants Manny Fernandez dead and that this feud might get settled "out behind the building" and maybe with a gun in his hand. Arn Anderson takes notes.

The Verdict

This isn't the worst match. It's not super exciting and, honestly, I think the whole "four corners" deal of strap matches is really dumb, but I can't say I thought this was necessarily a bad match. Definitely not deserving of just half a star.

And that brings us to the end of this post, as the main event of the show, the title unification match between Jerry Lawler and Kerry Von Erich was pretty well received overall, despite the bad finish...

Except that's not the end. Because even though they say on the show that the main event is Lawler vs Von Erich, it's not actually the main event. There's one more match after it. And what match was so important that it got the nod as the main event over a world title unification match...

Match #7: The Rock 'n' Roll Express vs The Stud Stable

...a normal tag match...with nothing on the line...is the main event...over the world title unification match...I have no idea why they did this. The Rock 'n' Roll Express are, of course, the legendary tag team of Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson in between runs in the NWA, while the Stud Stable consists of Robert Fuller & Jimmy Golden. Fuller is probably better known for his time as a manager, working as Col. Robert Parker in WCW, where he would manage the likes of Sid Vicious & Stunning Steve Austin before forming a new version of the Stud Stable. Among those in the new Stud Stable was Jimmy Golden, who would work as Bunkhouse Buck. Let's finish off SuperClash III once and for all.
Ricky Morton & Jimmy Golden start with a nice little exchange, trading holds on the mat before getting to their feet. Morton puts on a headlock, but Golden fights out, only for Morton to keep control with a shoulder block. Morton follows up with a hip toss, and delivers a second one to Robert Fuller when he runs into the ring. Morton follows up with a dropkick on Fuller, sending him out of the ring as Robert Gibson runs in and whips Golden across the ring. Golden follows his partner out of the ring, where the two argue with the referee, who is MIKE FUCKING ENOS AGAIN! I cannot escape this man on this show.
Back in the ring, Morton puts Golden in the front facelock. Golden powers out and flips Morton over, covering him in the process. Morton kicks out and turns over before hitting an inverted belly-to-back suplex and making the cover. Fuller runs in to break it up with a stomp, but Morton dodges it, causing Fuller to stomp his teammate. Gibson enters the ring and he & Morton throw the Stud Stable into each other in the corner. The heels again regroup outside the ring. Fuller & Gibson each tag in and lock up before doing a criss-cross. The rope running is broken up when Golden catches Gibson with a cheap knee from the apron. Fuller tosses Gibson out of the ring, where the Stud Stable's valet Sylvia hits Gibson with a kendo stick. Fuller brings Gibson back into the ring, where he tags in Golden to hip-toss Gibson. Golden works over Gibson with a waistlock, which Gibson breaks by biting Golden's forehead. The Stud Stable keeps control, however, when Fuller hits Gibson from behind. Golden tosses Gibson out of the ring, where Sylvia hits the ring apron, and occasionally Gibson, with the kendo stick. Fuller tosses Gibson back in the ring, where Golden locks in an abdominal stretch.
Golden tries to follow up with a back body drop, but Gibson kicks him in the face and makes the hot tag to Ricky Morton. Morton runs wild on the Stud Stable, punching away at both Fuller & Golden before Gibson joins the fight. Morton tosses Fuller out of the ring before he & Gibson hit the double dropkick. Morton makes the cover, but Fuller breaks up the fall. And then the match just...ends. Mike Enos counts out something as Gibson & Fuller start brawling outside the ring, and then he calls for the bell. I have no idea why they did this. The Rock 'n' Roll Express chase the Stud Stable to the back. Again, this is what they chose to main event over the world title unification match.

The Verdict

The match itself is pretty fine except for the finish, which makes no sense whatsoever and they never explain why it was a double disqualification. That finish is going to drag the match down.

    I’m going to Montreal next week for Elimination Chamber and the SmackDown the evening prior. Hopefully I won’t have to offer any suggestions right after a match takes place! My friend and I also have VIP tickets to see the Undertaker face to face backstage prior to his 1DeadMAN show! I’ve met so many wrestlers in my 35 years of fandom but this is going to be something else! Should I ask him what it was like to keep kayfabe for decades in public?

    Was Undertaker vs King Kong Bundy at WM11 or Big Boss Man at WM 15 ever suggested? Especially the latter, as BBM came back on RAW the next night showing no signs of being traumatized after being hung from the Cell.

      The Taker/Boss Man match is gonna get covered as part of a WrestleMania XV-themed post, but Taker vs Bundy has not been requested yet. I'll add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Can you do Every scott hall match from 2002? His Matches from 2002 are so bad the crowd can hear a pindrop during his matches and his match with Steve Austin is horrible to watch?

    Wow, any instance of something in the territory of Jenna Morasca bad is, well, really bad. Also, how wild were the 80s that a promotion had both an Apartheid supporter and a "Syrian Terrorist" on the same card as gimmicks? I am starting my training course to get into the professional wrestling business (no in-ring work for me on the account of far too many concussions) and I know that gimmicks can be just about anything but holy moly those are wild.

      It's insane. Between those two and the WWF booking Sgt. Slaughter's heel turn in the middle of the Gulf War just a few years later, it was definitely a crazy time for gimmicks.

    Here’s a farce of a match that popped in my head. Mean Gene Okerlund against Mark Madden on the August 16, 2000 Thunder. I think Gene-O later admitted it was the worst moment of his career.

    Looking at Pamela Paulshock for the first time was the only redeeming value from this match. Hey! I abandoned the WCW product in late 1998! She made that Kamloops Blazers jersey look hot!

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it.
