Worst in the World: Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Blue Demon Jr.-AAA Triplemanía XXX: Monterrey

(NOTE: Hey everyone, I just wanted to remind you that, for the entire month of April, I'll be upping my schedule to once a week, starting this Sunday. With that out of the way, I hope you enjoy!)
All and all, 2022 was a pretty damn good year wrestling-wise. We saw Ring of Honor return under Tony Khan's management and give us an excellent trilogy between FTR and the Briscoes, AEW and New Japan continue to put on some top-notch in-ring work, Cody Rhodes giving one of the gutsiest performances in wrestling history against Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell, and guys like Konosuke Takeshita and Josh Alexander quietly put themselves in the Wrestler of the Year conversation. On top of that, there really weren't that many truly awful matches, as no matches got lower than a 1/10 rating on Cagematch.net, and only one match got a DUD or lower rating from Dave Meltzer. That one match was Vince McMahon vs Pat McAfee from night 2 of WrestleMania 38, which received a negative two-star rating, and was subsequently won Worst Match of the Year in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards. This puts me in an unfamiliar situation. Usually, if the Worst Match of the Year is one I've already covered, I'd cover another match that got a DUD or worse rating, but there aren't any. So, I turn to Cagematch, and the lowest-rated match from 2022 on the site comes to us from Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide's Monterrey portion of Triplemanía XXX between two veteran luchadors in El Rayo de Jalisco Jr. and Blue Demon Jr.
Jalisco was last seen in this series back at entry #116 as part of the trios main event of CMLL's Leyendas Mexicana 2017. He was 57 years old then, which, yes, means he was 62 when this match happened. But even if you ignore his age, having Jalisco wrestle at all is pretty dicey in general, as he's dealt with multiple serious, career-altering injuries. I didn't touch on this last time I covered one of his matches (admittedly, bad research on my part), but the fact that Jalisco's been wrestling for as long as he has is shocking. Back in 1999, Jalisco would defend the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship against Universo 2000. During the match, a miscue on a Tombstone Piledriver caused him to injure his neck, an injury that kept him out of action for six months and nearly ended his career. Five years later in 2005, when he would've been 45 years old, Jalisco would again suffer a big injury, tearing ligaments in both his knees when he dove out of the ring. That was 17 years ago, and he's still wrestling.
Blue Demon Jr., while not quite as old as Jalisco, is still 56 years old here. American fans might recognize Demon from the first season of Lucha Underground, participating in the show's debut match with Chavo Guerrero Jr., along with being Mil Muertes first televised opponent. Demon is also a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, and is the only Mexican wrestler to hold the belt throughout its nearly 75-year history. While past his prime, Demon is still able to put on a solid match, even at 56, with the right opponent. Needless to say, a 62-year-old with a history of injuries like El Rayo de Jalisco Jr. is not the right opponent.
These two would face off as part of the "Ruleta de la Muerte" (Wheel of Death) eight-man tournament. Unlike a normal tournament, the loser of each match would move on to the next round, with the final match of the tournament seeing the loser unmasked. This match would be part of the first round, with the loser facing the loser of Ultimo Dragon and Pentagon Jr. in the next round. In a fun bit of history, Jalisco's father El Rayo de Jalisco was unmasked back in 1989 after losing a match against the original Blue Demon (he & Blue Demon Jr. are not blood-related, but Blue Demon Jr. is the original's adopted son.) However, the match itself was not well received, as it holds a 1.28 rating on Cagematch, beating out notable duds like the Men's Royal Rumble, Ric Flair's Last Match, and Tyrus vs Trevor Murdoch vs Matt Cardona for the title of the worst rated match of 2022 on the site (McMahon vs McAfee was under five minutes, making it ineligible for a rating on the site.) Let's get into this.
There is A LOT of stalling to start this match, with a good minute of the two just playing up to the crowd. The two eventually interact, trading shoves. This leads to even more stalling, as the two circle the ring for another full minute. The two go to lock up, but Demon ducks out and goes for a strike. Jalisco blocks it, however, and slaps Demon, knocking him down to the mat. Jalisco follows up with another slap, sending Demon into the corner. Jalisco continues striking Demon in the corner, hitting him with chops, slaps, and punches until Demon fights back, appearing to kick Jalisco directly in his left ass cheek. Demon begins slapping & punching away at Jalisco in the corner before whipping him across the ring and hitting a running-back elbow. Demon begins to choke Jalisco against the ropes, tearing at his mask as he does it. Demon then transitions to a wrist lock before slapping Jalisco, who sells by just kind of lying down.
With Jalisco down, Demon leaves the ring and grabs a variety of weapons, including a baking sheet, a chain, and just a straight-up hammer.
Demon brings his weapons into the ring, first hitting Jalisco in the head with the baking sheet and sending him out of the ring. Demon then grabs the chain and follows him out, wrapping his fist in the chain and punching Jalisco, busting him open. Demon continues punching Jalisco with the chain before standing on his head. Demon grabs the chain again and starts choking Jalisco before throwing him back in the ring, where he hits him in the head with the baking sheet again. Demon then tries to hit Jalisco with the hammer, but the referee steps in and stops him. Demon instead opts to set the baking sheet up in the corner and throw Jalisco's head into it, knocking it down to ringside.
Jalisco rolls out of the ring, with Demon following him. Jalisco turns the tables, however, by grabbing the sheet and hitting Demon in the head with it. Jalisco follows up with a shot across the back, but Demon regains control with a punch to the gut. Demon continues punching Jalisco before ramming his head into the ring post. Demon follows up with a slap before punching him in the face. The two exchange strikes before Demon kicks Jalisco in the shin and throws him back in the ring. Only, Jalisco is so tired, even though they've barely done anything, and so broken down at this point that he can't even be thrown into the ring, he has to stop and slowly climb up onto the apron.
This isn't even funny, it's just kind of...sad.
Demon makes the cover, but Jalisco kicks out at two. Demon follows up by chopping Jalisco in the corner and whipping him across the ring. Watching Jalisco barely be able to run is also very sad.
Demon follows up with a clothesline in the corner, but a second Irish whip is reversed by Jalisco, who sends Demon across the ring. Jalisco follows up with a back body drop before hitting a plethora of headbutts for a near fall. Demon regains control with a low blow and makes the cover, but Jalisco kicks out again. Jalsico fires back with an uppercut to the junk and makes the cover, but Demon also kicks out. The two trade blows before Demon avoids a second back body drop and goes for the pin off a sunset flip, but Jalisco kicks out. Demon tries to follow up with a hip toss, but Jalisco blocks it and locks in an abdominal stretch. Jalisco rolls over and turns it into a pin, but Demon gets a foot on the ropes to break the pin.
The two trade more strikes before Jalisco bodyslams Demon and stands on the bottom rope, but if you think for a second a guy who ran like that is doing anything resembling a dive off the rope, then you are sorely mistaken. Jalisco calls for a diving* headbutt, but really just kind of steps down and gets booted in the face by Demon. Demon makes the cover, but Jalisco kicks out again. In the biggest move of the match, Demon goes to the top rope, only for Jalisco to pop up and throw him down to the mat. There have been three bumps in this match, and Demon has taken all of them. I'm 13 minutes in. Jalisco makes the cover, but Demon kicks out again. Jalisco takes his first thing resembling a bump all match, hitting a leg drop before making the cover for a two count. Demon tries to respond by locking in a Scorpion Deathlock, but Jalisco powers out of it and slaps Demon to the ground. Jalisco goes to put Demon in the Romero Special, only for music to play and for Los Hermanos Dinamitas' music to hit, bringing out Cien Caras and Máscara Año 2000. Both men were also part of the Leyendas Mexicana 2017 match, so it's like a reunion I never wanted. Also, 73-year-old Caras now uses a cane to walk.
He's doing a run-in...and he needs a cane to walk.
Caras and Máscara walk down to the ring, but this is only a distraction, as Nueva Generación Dinamita (Caras' sons Sansón and El Cuatrero, and his and Máscara's nephew Forastero) run in from the crowd, with Sansón carrying a guitar. For reference, Jalisco and Cien Caras would have a Mask vs Mask match all the way back in 1990 at Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre's (CMLL before it became Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre) 57th Anniversary Show, where Caras would hit Jalisco with a guitar. Forgive me if I mix up the names in this next part, as the members of Nueva Generación Dinamita all wear pretty similar masks and the version I'm watching has the Spanish commentary, so I'm not 100% sure. Jalisco fends off Forastero and El Cuatrero before dodging a guitar shot from Sansón. Jalisco punches Sansón and grabs the guitar, smashing it over Demon's head. Jalisco makes the cover and gets the three, earning the win and protecting his mask.
After the match, Nueva Generación Dinamita attack Jalisco from behind as Caras & Máscara get in the ring. Unsurprisingly, 73-year-old Cien Caras trying to stomp Jalisco is...
...not very convincing. The rudos beat down Jalisco until security breaks them up. The rudos, however, end up rushing the ring again to continue attacking Jalisco as medics attend to Demon. The medics put Demon on a stretcher as Jalisco takes the mic. Again, since I don't speak Spanish, I'm assuming he is making a challenge, kind of like how he seemingly challenged Caras after the Leyendas Mexicana match. That match never happened, and while Caras being, again, 73 years old and needing a cane to walk would lead me to believe him to wrestle, the fact that Caras has already wrestled a match in 2023 means I'm not entirely, I just hope he's not challenging him.

The Verdict

Obviously, this is pretty damn bad. Rayo de Jalisco Jr. can't really do anything physically at this point, and it shows with how little he actually does in this match. Legitimately, he takes one thing that could even be considered a bump. Blue Demon Jr. does a bit more than Jalisco and takes more bumps, but his age still shows in this match. And this isn't a short match. 14 minutes of slow strikes and the occasional move. It's an uneventful brawl that goes on for way too long and ends with a cheap finish. It's going pretty low on the list, and it definitely deserves its 1.28 rating on Cagematch.

  1. Another great review as always man! Yeah having a singles match between two elderly luchadores is not going to turn into something great this is what Heroes of Wrestling would of booked!
Here's a bad Raw main event: The Rock vs Billy Gunn/Chyna (Raw July 26 1999)

    1. Thank you! Yeah, it's always dicey having two 50+ year old wrestlers together in a singles match. Granted, sometimes it works out fine (the LA Park/Villano IV match got pretty solid ratings from Cagematch and from Meltzer) but other times you get something like this.
Also, I'll add that match to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

  2. Remember when Vince McMahon won the WWE Title? Well here's the match that made it happen!

    1. This is an interesting one. Hashimikov is probably the most obscure IWGP Heavyweight Champion ever and I've been interested in checking out one of his matches. I'll add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

  5. Do you critique indie matches if there’s video proof? If so, here’s one from November 2013 in Real Canadian Wrestling (which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year if you can believe it) that’s five minutes long that you might want to check out. The match ends with the worst frog splash you will ever see and the referee still makes the three count!

Katana was the veteran in the match and had no excuse for performing the move. For all intents and purposes, he never wrestled a single match again except for three random bouts in 2020.

    1. I'll take a look at it. I'll definitely look at indy matches in the series (I try to, at the very least, find exactly what show the match took place at.) Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. November 9, 2013 Real Canadian Wrestling - Road to Redemption - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Katana has a Cagematch profile that extends back to the early 90s although he took over an entire decade off before this match. Zen Hero El Robotica was probably a guy doing his first match and he donned a mask. After that performance, that was probably his last match too.

    3. Gotcha. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Cagematch requires a certain amount of people attend a show for it be on the site, so big gaps like that might just be smaller shows not listed.

  7. This same show also features a match in the same tournament where a 70 year old Canek tries to wrestle and goes over on one of AAA’s top stars in Psycho Clown.

Say what you will about the shameful display that was Ric Flair’s Last Match, at least they had the decency to make that a tag.

    1. Yeah, it's crazy. On one hand, I kind of understand not having a 70-year-old lose and advance in the tournament to avoid having him wrestle more than once. Then again, it's probably a better idea to just not book a tournament where that's a possibility.

    2. I might have to take a look at that Canek/Psycho Clown match now

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
