Worst in the World: New Jack vs Mustafa-Living Dangerously 1999

Watching former tag team partners face off is a staple of professional wrestling. Former friends turned enemies after one wrestler stabs the other in the back, leading to an incredibly heated feud chock full of the emotion that pro-wrestling thrives on. Over the years, we've seen plenty of fantastic rivalries & matches come out of these kinds of feuds, whether it be the top-notch in-ring work of the Johnny Gargano-Tommaso Ciampa series (excluding One Final Beat, which was...something) to intense drama of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage's feud going into WrestleMania 5, a tag team break up can create magic in the ring. However, the magic isn't always there, and sometimes former tag partners facing off doesn't lead to memorable matches. This is the case for this match, as the former Gangstas teammates New Jack and Mustafa faced off at ECW's Living Dangerously 1999. In fact, this match-up between the former Gangstas created so little buzz that many of you reading this probably didn't even know this match ever happened.
Pairing up in 1994, New Jack and Mustafa first gained prominence in Smoky Mountain Wrestling, where they would be joined by D'Lo Brown and Killer Kyle, before making the jump to ECW in 1995. The Gangstas would become one of the most popular tag teams in the company, holding the ECW World Tag Team Championships on two occasions. In 1997, however, the team would split, as Mustafa left ECW. Following the split, New Jack, while never holding singles gold, would remain a staple of ECW until the promotion closed, even adding another tag title run with John Kronus. Mustafa wouldn't be seen in ECW again until 1999, returning at Crossing the Line '99. Initially reuniting with New Jack, Mustafa would turn on him, siding with the Dudley Boyz with the goal of running Jack out of ECW. The two would have their only televised singles match at the following month's Living Dangerously. Unfortunately, the match was a bust, earning a show-low quarter-star rating from Dave Meltzer. Let's get into this.
New Jack comes down to the ring with a garbage can full of weapons, but not the steel cans you normally see in wrestling, he's got one of those big plastic ones with wheels you have at your house.
Jack chucks the can into the ring before grabbing a crutch and hitting Mustafa in the gut. Jack breaks the crutch over his back before grabbing a computer keyboard and hitting him over the head, keys flying off of it. Jack hits a snapmare before setting a street sign on Mustafa's crotch and smashing it with a golf club. Mustafa pleads with Jack, but Jack taunts him before kicking and punching him. Mustafa is able to turn the tables, however, with a headbutt to Jack's groin. Mustafa grabs a children's toy lawnmower and hits Jack over the head with it before doing the same with a bucket of some kind.  New Jack matches are essentially just people hitting each other with literally any random object you can think of.
Mustafa chucks the trash can at Jack before hitting him over the head with a baking sheet. Mustafa beats down Jack in the corner before knocking him down with a very clunky clothesline. Jack sells this for about a second before grabbing the keyboard and smashing Mustafa over the back. Jack then grabs a guitar and tries to hit Mustafa with it, only for the body of it to fly off as Jack swings it and into the crowd.
Thankfully, the crowd tosses it back to Jack, who promptly smashes it over Mustafa's head. Mustafa fires back with a, as Joey Styles on commentary puts it, "straight right hand to the scrotum" before the two roll out of the ring.
The two trade blows at ringside before Jack tosses Mustafa over the barricade and into the crowd. The two brawl through the crowd before Mustafa tosses Jack into a wall. Mustafa beats down Jack before hitting him with a chair. Mustafa follows up with an elbow drop before beating him down with the ground and pound. Jack fires back with a punch followed by a chair shot of his own to Mustafa's back. Jack grabs a table, setting it up before laying Mustafa across it. Jack grabs a roll of electrical tape and tapes Mustafa down to the table. Jack walks through the crowd up to a balcony, where he takes a big dive and crashes down onto Mustafa & through the table. A doctor runs out to check on both men before security pick both men up and carry them back to the ring. New Jack crawls over onto Mustafa, makes the cover, and gets the win.
After the match, the Dudley Boyz, along with Sign Guy Dudley and Joel Gertner, run in to attack New Jack. Gertner lands some of the funniest shitty little slaps you'll ever see before Buh Buh Ray & D-Von chuck Jack out of the ring and onto the entrance ramp. This all leads into the next match, a tag match pitting the Dudley Boyz against their brother Spike and Sid, which is...not very good.

The Verdict

It's a big, chaotic weapons brawl, and that's about it. Granted, it's better than the other New Jack matches I've covered on this series, even if the main reason is because nobody almost died in this one. There's very little actual wrestling in this, and while it's far from the worst match I've ever seen, it's not going very high on the list.

That was probably the greatest main event in Summer Slam history, nobody objected to it! *sniff* I love weddings!

On a serious note, the wrestling main event of the show is undoubtedly the worst one in Summer Slam history. Did anyone think the Triangle of Terror stood a chance of defeating Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior? At least they plant a reason of doubt during Roman Reigns matches.

A few other SummerSlam requests from two specific shows:

2017 - John Cena vs Baron Corbin
The Big Show vs Big (C)ass (a reference to a picture where his head blocked the C when he was heading to the ring)
Jinder Mahal vs Shinsuke Nakamura (although I suspect someone beat me to the punch already)

    1988
Bad News Brown vs Ken Patera
    Junkyard Dog vs Rick Rude
    Powers of Pain vs Bolsheviks
    Don Muraco vs Dino Bravo

    1. The Cena/Corbin and Nakamura/Jinder match have been requested, and I'd actually added the Big Cass & Big Show match to the list myself as part of a look back at the break-up of Enzo & Cass.
The Summerslam '88 matches are all new requests, I believe, so I'll add them to the list. Thanks for the suggestions!

    1. I had gotten a request for the Kidman-Flair match from that show (maybe the battle royal also, can't remember exactly.) I'd never actually heard about the New York Rules episode (I think it was actually Thunder) and once I looked it up, I figured the whole show deserved an entry.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
