Worst in the World: CM Punk vs Ryback-A Trilogy of Terror

Yeah, I was not surprised to see this one win the poll. Not one bit...

In terms of match quality from American wrestlers throughout the 2000s, CM Punk has one of the stronger resumes. Whether it be his standout trilogies with Samoa Joe and Chris Hero, his pair of matches with John Cena, or his marquee bouts with guys like Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker, Punk tends to put on a good show. Even his worst-rated matches tend to fall more in the category of "unremarkable." However, if there's one noticeable blemish in the career of Punk, it's his pay-per-view trilogy with Ryback.

Back in 2012, Punk was asked who his least favorite opponent was, and he answered Elijah Burke. Just based on everything Punk has said about him after he left WWE in 2014, I can only imagine Ryback has, at the very least, entered the conversation for his least favorite opponent in the years since. These three matches, one in 2012 and two in 2013, are probably less infamous for the actual wrestling, and more for Punk's thoughts on working with Ryback. In the now famous/infamous episode of Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling podcast, Punk laid into Ryback, referring to him as the following:

• "Steroid Guy"
• "Very hurty, sometimes deliberate" and that he'd intentionally broken Punk's ribs
• "A real piece of work"
• "A horribly dangerous opponent"
• "Dumb as fuck"

Punk would go as far as to say that working with Ryback "took twenty years" off his life. Long story short, CM Punk and Ryback do not get along. That being said, are these matches actually that bad? Or is their reputation a result of the now-public animosity? Let's take a look for ourselves.

Match #1: Hell in a Cell 2012

We start this trilogy back in October 2012. CM Punk was in the middle of what would be a 434-day reign as the WWE Champion and had turned heel back in July, aligning with Paul Heyman. Punk had retained the title against John Cena at Night of Champions the previous month and looked set to face him again at Hell in a Cell, but Cena had been dealing with an arm injury. At the same time, Ryback was in the middle of a dominant 38-match winning streak, having gone undefeated since re-debuting in April (he'd previously wrestled on the main roster as Skip Sheffield.) With two possible challengers, Mr. McMahon gave Punk the choice between Cena and Ryback for Hell in a Cell in the titular match. However, due to his injury, Cena would bow out and Ryback would be given the spot.

I know Ryback's kind of a meme nowadays, but back in 2012, he was legitimately over and one of the hottest acts WWE had at the time. Even if this was a rapid ascent, a match this big could've cemented him as a main eventer. However, this match would also be hampered by one key detail. The Rock had already declared he would be challenging for the WWE Championship at the 2013 Royal Rumble, and had had a confrontation with Punk. It was crystal clear this was going to lead to Punk vs Rock, and regardless of how much a loss would hurt Ryback, no undefeated streak was getting in the way of that. But even without that forgone conclusion, this match underwhelmed, as it earned a star and a half from Dave Meltzer, and it currently sits at a 2.07 out of 10 on Cagematch.net, the lowest of Punk's career. Let's take a look.

The bell rings and Punk immediately slips out of the ring. Punk walks around ringside before sliding back into the ring. Ryback goes for a lock-up, but Punk ducks it and slides out of the ring again. Punk gets back in the ring, where Ryback slowly corners him. Ryback goes for another lock-up, but Punk ducks again. Ryback goes for a clothesline, but Punk ducks again. Punk lands the first bit of offense, a chop, but it doesn't faze Ryback. Punk ducks another clothesline, but Ryback grabs him & lifts him up by the throat. Ryback drops him before whipping him across the ring and catching him with a big boot.

Ryback keeps control, slamming Punk's head into the mat before whipping him hard into the corner. Ryback whips Punk to the opposite corner and charges in, but Punk catches him with a boot. Punk tries to follow up with a tornado DDT, but Ryback just tosses him away with ease. Ryback follows up by clotheslining Punk out of the ring, causing him to fall into the cell wall. Punk tries to rip the cell door's chain off as Ryback exits the ring.

Ryback tosses Punk into the cell wall twice before rolling him back in the ring. Punk quickly rolls out of the ring again, this time crawling under the apron. Ryback exits the ring and pulls the apron up, only for Punk to blast him in the face with a fire extinguisher. Punk capitalizes, spearing Ryback into the cell wall before kneeing him down to one knee. Punk reaches under the ring again and grabs a chair. Punk charges at Ryback, only for Ryback to boot the chair back in his face. Ryback Gorilla presses Punk back into the ring, where he quickly gorilla presses him again before dropping him down. 

Ryback goes for the Meathook Clothesline, but Punk slips out of the way and Ryback crashes into the corner. Punk quickly yanks Ryback's head into the top rope before hitting a springboard clothesline. Punk goes to the top rope and hits a diving double axe handle, but Ryback doesn't go down. Punk goes back to the top and hits it again, this time knocking Ryback down to one knee. Punk goes back to the top for a third, but Ryback catches him and rams him into the corner. Ryback tries to follow up with a clothesline, but Punk catches him with a heel kick to keep control.

Ryback rolls out of the ring, putting him in position for Punk to hit a suicide dive, sending both men into the cell wall. Punk beats down Ryback, including hitting him with the chair, before hitting a neckbreaker on the outside. Punk continues hitting Ryback with the chair before going for another neckbreaker. Ryback blocks it, however, and powers Punk onto his shoulders. Punk slips out, and then dodges a charging Ryback, sending him crashing into the steps. Punk rolls back into the ring, with Ryback following soon after.

Punk locks in a headlock, but Ryback quickly fights to his feet, lifting Punk on his back and hitting a backpack stunner. Punk crawls into the corner and Ryback charges in, but again Punk dodges and Ryback crashes into the corner. Punk follows up with the step-up knee in the corner, followed by a clothesline. Punk climbs to the top rope and hits the diving elbow drop before leaving the ring. Punk goes under the ring and grabs a kendo stick. Punk strikes Ryback with the stick, but Ryback shrugs off each strike. Ryback eventually blocks a shot and tosses the stick away. Punk responds with elbows, but Ryback shrugs them off and floors Punk with a clothesline. 

Ryback follows up with another clothesline before ducking a clothesline from Punk. Ryback hits a back body drop and a Spinebuster before going to the corner. Ryback revs up and hits the Meathook Clothesline before calling for Shell Shocked (a cradle suplex into a delayed Samoan Drop.) Ryback gets Punk on his shoulders and marches around the ring...only for referee Brad Maddox to step in front of him. Maddox goes down on one knee and low blows Ryback.

Punk slips out and rolls up Ryback, with Maddox laying over Ryback's legs himself. Maddox fast counts, giving Punk the win to retain the title.

Punk & Maddox immediately go for the door, but referee Mike Chioda can't get it unlocked. Ryback recovers and Punk shoves Maddox towards him. Ryback easily throws him to the ground before chasing after Punk. Ryback throws Punk into the cell wall as Chioda gets the door open. Ryback tosses Maddox into the cell wall before throwing him back in the ring, where he hits him with the Meathook Clothesline. In a great spot, Ryback gorilla presses Maddox and tosses him over the top rope and into the cell wall, sending him crashing to the ground. Punk tries to crawl out of the cell, but Ryback catches up to him.

Paul Heyman flees as Ryback whips Punk towards the cell wall. Punk, however, leaps up and clings to the wall. Punk climbs to the top of the cell, with Ryback climbing after him. Ryback reaches the top as Punk tries to escape. Ryback catches him, however, and hits Shell Shocked on top of the cell. Ryback stands tall to close the show.

The Verdict

Not as bad as I remember it being. All in all, it's mostly just a standard match. It's not really main-event caliber, even with a strong worker like Punk, and is pretty lackluster for Hell in a Cell, but it's not terrible. It's definitely not as bad as any of the other Cell matches I've covered in this series. The ending, however, is pretty weak, and a blatant attempt to save face for Ryback by having him lose in such a screwy way. That'll knock it down a few spots, but this is still not that bad.

Match #2: Battleground 2013

It would be almost a full year before CM Punk and Ryback faced off in singles action on pay-per-view. In between then, they'd be two-thirds of a Triple Threat match at Survivor Series alongside John Cena, and would face off in a TLC match on an episode of Raw, which would be their only solid match together. In the time between their feuds, Punk would drop Heyman as his manager, which led to a feud between Heyman and his various Paul Heyman Guys. First Brock Lesnar, then Curtis Axel, and finally  the newest client; Ryback. Ryback had turned heel after WrestleMania to feud with John Cena for the WWE title, which he'd lose, before helping Heyman defeat Punk in a Handicap elimination match at Night of Champions by putting Punk through a table.

By 2013, any momentum & potential that Ryback had as a major player was out the window thanks to some bad booking (constantly losing on pay-per-view) and the fact that he just wasn't that good in the ring. This pairing of Ryback & Heyman really felt like a last-ditch effort to make Ryback a big deal, but alas, it didn't work. And despite a bad reception to their Hell in a Cell match, Punk & Ryback would face off again at the inaugural Battleground pay-per-view. Once again, it underwhelmed. It earned two stars from Dave Meltzer, which isn't terrible, but was so forgettable that it doesn't have a single rating on Cagematch. I'd say it's because Battleground as a whole was a lackluster show (save for the Rhodes Brothers vs The Shield) but even midcard matches like Curtis Axel vs R-Truth have some ratings. Let's take a look.

The two lock up to start, with Ryback forcing Punk into the corner until referee Mike Chioda forces a break. Another lock-up sees Ryback quickly throw Punk to the mat. A third lock-up sees Ryback force Punk into the corner again, this time shoulder-rushing him before whipping him to the opposite corner. Punk slides before he hits the corner, allowing him to turn and kick away at Ryback's legs before Ryback slides out of the ring. Ryback consults with Paul Heyman at ringside before sliding back in the ring. Punk pounces on him, kicking & kneeing him before whipping him to the ropes. Ryback slides out of the ring, only for Punk to catch him with a suicide dive.

Punk climbs on the barricade and tries to follow up with a diving double axe handle, but Ryback catches him. Ryback tries to ram Punk into the ring post, but Punk slips out and shoves Ryback into the post. Punk throws Ryback back in the ring and climbs to the top rope, diving off for a crossbody. Punk makes the cover, but Ryback kicks out at one. Punk goes back to kicking & kneeing Ryback, but Ryback takes control by throwing Punk into the turnbuckle. Ryback sets Punk on the top rope just so he can throw him back down to the mat. Ryback then throws Punk to the corner, but under the ropes, causing him to hit the post ribs first.

Ryback follows up with a snapmare and a kick before locking in a headlock. Punk fights to his feet and tries to break the hold, but Ryback keeps control with a belly-to-belly suplex. Ryback follows up with a leg drop for a two count before chopping Punk in the corner. Ryback whips Punk to the opposite corner, where he clotheslines him before standing on his head. Ryback drops an elbow on Punk before kicking away at him. Punk fires back with chops and kicks, but Ryback keeps control with a clothesline. Ryback lifts Punk up in a vertical suplex before dropping him across the top rope. Ryback follows up with a big boot before clubbing Punk against the mat.

Ryback continues controlling the match, kicking Punk before beating him down in the corner. A running shoulder block gets a two count before Ryback locks in a headlock. Ryback adds to the lock with body scissors, but Punk is able to fight out with forearms and elbows. Punk retreats to the corner, where Ryback charges in. Punk catches him with a boot, and he dodges a second charge. Punk strikes away at Ryback, dodging a clothesline in the process before hitting a jumping heel kick. Punk follows up with a forearm and a swinging neckbreaker before calling for the GTS.

Suddenly, Paul Heyman grabs the mic and declares himself the "Best in the World" because he pinned Punk at Night of Champions. The distraction allows Ryback to level Punk with a Meathook Clothesline. Ryback follows up with a Powerbomb and makes the cover, but Punk kicks out. Ryback makes the cover two more times, but Punk still kicks out. Heyman instructs Ryback to Powerbomb Punk again, but Punk slips out and roundhouse kicks Ryback. Ryback stumbles into the corner, putting him in position to hit the step-up knee followed by a clothesline. Punk climbs to the top rope and hits the diving elbow drop, but Ryback kicks out.

Ryback retreats into the corner, where Punk hits another step-up knee. Punk hits a third and goes for a fourth, but Ryback catches him in a Powerbomb position. Punk counters with a hurricanrana and goes for the GTS, but Ryback escapes with elbows. Ryback scoops Punk up and hits a powerslam, but Punk kicks out. Ryback clubs away at Punk in the ropes until Mike Chioda forces him to break. With Chioda distracted, Heyman goes under the ring and grabs a kendo stick. Before he can use it, Chioda catches him and scolds him. With the ref distracted again, Punk low blows Ryback and makes the cover. Chioda makes the count, giving Punk the win.

The Verdict

Unlike the Hell in a Cell match, I thought this match was just kind of dull. A couple of nice spots, but there's definitely a lot of basic, uninteresting offense. Not horrible, but not really worth watching.

Match #3: Hell in a Cell 2013

With their match at Battleground ending like that, it was obvious the Punk-Ryback feud was done yet, as they'd quickly be scheduled to face off once again at Hell in a Cell three weeks later. This time, however, there would be a stipulation, which would be chosen by the winner of a Beat the Clock challenge between Punk & Ryback. Heyman & Ryback made it clear they'd choose a Handicap match, pitting Punk against Ryback & Curtis Axel, but Punk would win the challenge. Punk would also choose a Handicap match; CM Punk vs Ryback & Paul Heyman inside Hell in a Cell. Could Punk & Ryback make up for their underwhelming Cell match almost a full year later? A little, but not much, as the match received two and a quarter stars from Dave Meltzer, while it currently sits at a 3.71 on Cagematch. Let's take a look.

Ryback comes down to the ring and enters the cell, alone. Heyman, instead, rides down to the cell on a scissor lift soon after.

Heyman calls himself the "Best in Hell" as the lift rises up to the top of the cell. He says Punk sold his soul to the devil (himself) and that he's going to collect. Heyman walks onto the roof of the cell and says he owns CM Punk before the bell rings. Ryback goes for a quick clothesline, but Punk ducks it and strikes away at Ryback. Ryback shoves Punk, but Punk continues to take the fight to him. Ryback scoops Punk up for a gorilla press, but Punk slips out and chop-blocks Ryback's knee. Punk targets Ryback's leg, kicking away at it before booting him out of the ring.

Punk follows up with a suicide dive before going under the ring and grabbing a kendo stick. Punk swings, but Ryback dodges. Ryback dodges a second shot before picking up Punk and ramming him into the cell wall. Ryback runs to the opposite side and does it again before just tossing Punk into the wall. Ryback hits Punk with the stick twice before tossing him back in the ring. Ryback hits Punk again before choking him with the stick. Ryback whips Punk into the ropes before flooring him with a back elbow. Ryback punches Punk into the corner, where he shoulder rushes him before whipping him into the opposite corner hard.

Ryback steps on Punk's head before splashing him for a two count. Ryback follows up with a waistlock, but Punk fights out with elbows. Ryback charges at Punk, but Punk ducks and Ryback flies over the top rope and out of the ring, crashing into the cell wall. Punk goes to the top rope, diving to the outside and hitting a double axe handle. Punk goes back under the ring and grabs a table, but Ryback cuts him off by shoving him back into the ring steps. Ryback chokes Punk with his boot before suplexing him into the cell wall three times.

 Ryback tosses Punk back in the ring, where he hits a back suplex for a two count. Ryback locks in a headlock. Punk tries to fight out, but Ryback quickly shuts him down with a backpack stunner for a two count. Ryback goes back to the waistlock. Punk fights out with strikes and tries to whip Ryback, but Ryback won't budge. Ryback whips Punk to the corner and charges in, but Punk catches him with a boot before hitting a double jump crossbody out of the corner for a two count. Punk dropkicks Ryback's knee, causing him to fall into the corner. Punk follows up with the step-up knee before going for the springboard clothesline. Ryback catches him, however, and slams him down for a two count.

Ryback calls for Shell Shocked and gets Punk up, but Punk slips out. Ryback goes for a clothesline, but Punk ducks it and sends him into the turnbuckle. Punk grabs the kendo stick and swings away at Ryback before hitting another step-up knee. Punk follows up with the clothesline before climbing to the top rope, diving off with an elbow drop for a two count. Punk grabs the kendo stick again, beating Ryback before grabbing the table from ringside. Punk starts setting the table up, but Ryback hits Punk from behind. Ryback sets the table sideways and tries to Powerbomb Punk onto it, but Punk slips out. Punk lands a few kicks and goes for a roundhouse, but Ryback ducks and lifts Punk up, dropping & crotching him on the sideways table.

Ryback follows up with the Meathook Clothesline and makes the cover, but Punk kicks out. Ryback sets up the table properly and goes for the Powerbomb, but Punk drops down and low blows him. Ryback falls across the table as Punk climbs back to the top rope. Punk dives off with an elbow drop, putting Ryback through the table. Both men struggle to their feet before Punk hits Ryback with the kendo stick. Punk quickly follows up with the GTS and makes the cover for the three and the win.

Punk's not done, as he looks up at Heyman. Punk goes under the ring and grabs another kendo stick. Punk climbs to the top of the cell, as Heyman has nowhere to run. Heyman pleads, but Punk repeatedly hits him with the stick. Punk calls for it before picking Heyman up and hitting the GTS.

The Verdict

Just kind of the same as their Battleground match, just inside Hell in a Cell and with weapons. Mostly forgettable with a couple of nice spots. There's a clean finish so it'll go higher, but that's all I can really say about it.
