My Thoughts on SmackDown (7/4/17): Keep It PG

Happy 4th of July everyone. Or as they call it outside of the US...Tuesday. Hope you enjoy this review.
  • We kick off the show with the return of John Cena. He talks about Independence Day before saying the WWE is a lot like America, where people from all walks of life come together. He then turns his attention to the people who say he's "gone Hollywood" and a "part timing mascot." He says he's not a part timer. That's kind of hard to say that when you just came back from two-month break...which was preceded by a two-month break. He then says he'll beat anyone who steps in his way before Rusev makes his return. Finally, Handsome Rusev is back. Rusev says he works just as hard as Cena, so hard that he got injured, but he never got return promo packages. He says Cena's not going to take his opportunities from him and calls America a joke. Cena responds with a dick joke and challenges Rusev to a match. Rusev says Bulgarian Independence Day is better than America's, where we just stuff our faces with hot dogs & cheeseburgers. That gets a pop, which prompts Rusev to say "THAT'S NOT A COMPLIMENT!" Cena then proposes they have a Flag match right now. Rusev agrees...just not today. Dude, this is like the one day it's even half-appropriate to have a Flag match. Cena calls Rusev a coward before starting a USA chant.
  • Backstage, Daniel Bryan tells AJ Styles & Chad Gable that Kevin Owens doesn't think either of them should be in the Independence Day battle royal because he's beaten both of them. However, Bryan instead books Styles vs Gable next, with the winner getting a spot in the battle royal.
  • AJ Styles vs Chad Gable-Gable starts off mat wrestling Styles and throwing him around the ring. Styles manages to land on his feet off a suplex and kicks away at Gable's legs before hitting a dropkick before the commercial break. We come back to Gable meeting Styles on the top rope. Styles knocks Gable down, but Gable gets back up there. However, Styles slides underneath and drops Gable onto the top turnbuckle. Styles goes for the Phenomenal Forearm, but Gable hits the top rope to knock him down. Gable goes for a moonsault, but Styles dodges it. Gable lands on his feet, only for Styles to suplex him into the corner. Styles goes for the Styles Clash, but Gable slips out and locks in an ankle lock. Styles manages to break out and locks in the Calf Crusher, but Gable breaks the hold. Styles strikes away at Gable until Gable hits a German suplex, leaving both men down. Gable tries for Chaos Theory, but Styles victory rolls him for a near fall. Styles hits a Pele Kick before hitting the Phenomenal Forearm for the win. Pretty good match. After the match, Styles shows Gable respect.
  • Backstage, Mojo Rawley looks at his Hype Bros t-shirt sadly before Zack Ryder tells him to put their loss to the Usos in the rear-view. Ryder then tells him that he got them both put in the battle royal tonight, which Rawley says was a mistake because he won the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.
  • Outcomes Carmella & James Ellsworth. Ellsworth says he's canceling Independence Day to have a "Carmella-bration." She says everyone wanted to "right a wrong" but you can't always get what you want...unless you're name is Carmella. She says she has all the power now before Naomi interrupts her with her awesome new glowing title belt. Naomi congratulates Carmella on winning the Money in the Bank ladder match, but she says she's not scared of her cashing in. She then says someone has some words for James Ellsworth. Outcomes Daniel Bryan, who bars him from the arena again...and fining him $10,000...and suspending him for 30 days. Bryan also says that if Ellsworth doesn't leave or breaks any of these rules, he'll strip Carmella of the Money in the Bank briefcase. Carmella & Ellsworth quickly leave.
  • Naomi (c) vs Lana-SmackDown Women's Championship-Naomi immediately rolls up Lana and locks in the Slay-o-mission for the submission win. I don't know what that one gif where the guy has a surprised reaction is called, so...here's Orlando Magic rookie Jonathon Issac dancing for no reason.
After the match, Tamina off all people comes down to the ring and tells Lana to come with her.
  • Dasha Fuentes tries to interview Shinsuke Nakamura, only for Baron Corbin to attack him from behind. The two brawl before referees break them up.
  • It's time for a rap battle between the Usos & the New Day hosted by Wale. Both teams come out with their own group of dudes. Wale lays down the rules before both teams drop lines. At one point, the Usos dropped a line about how Big E needs to keep it PG and not "rated R like your boy Xavier Woods.
They win. They win no matter what the New Day says after that. They went right for the jugular on that. Woods has good lines about how Jimmy Uso is only relevant because his wife got him on Total Divas and how they used to carry Roman Reigns' bags. That line prompts the Usos to attack the New Day, which prompts Wale to disqualify the Usos and give the win to the New Day. I don't care, the Usos killed the New Day in this.
  • Aiden English vs Randy Orton-English attacks Orton during his entrance and throws him into the ring steps for interrupting his song. The match starts during a commercial break and we come back to Orton hitting a powerslam. English rolls out of the ring, so Orton follows him out and clotheslines him down. Orton throws English over the announce table before throwing him into the barricade and the ring post. Orton then back suplexes English onto the announce table before tearing apart the announce table. Orton hits the draping DDT off the announce table before grabbing the ring steps. The referee warns Orton that he will be disqualified if he hits English with them, but Orton says he doesn't care and hits English for the DQ. Back in the ring, Orton gives English an RKO. After that, Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers come out on the stage. Jinder calls America the home of prejudice & ignorance and says people don't like because of the way he talks & the color of his skin. He says he will destroy Orton's legacy at Battleground and prove that he is the only real superpower in WWE. He tries to speak in Punjabi, but Orton interrupts him. He says he'll punish Jinder in the Punjabi Prison and says people don't like Jinder because he's a jackass.
  • Tye Dillinger shows up on TV for the first time in months (in non-pre-taped form) before Tyler Breeze in a wig tries to interview him. Behind him, we see Fandango disguised as an electrician...I think. Dillinger questions what will happen if Breezango has to face off in the battle royal. Dillinger leaves before Breezango says they may have to come to blows for America.
  • Renee Young interviews Maria & Mike Kanellis. Maria says love is undeniable and timeless, but not everyone gets it. And then the camera goes out. It eventually comes back on, only for Sami Zayn to unintentionally interrupt them by knocking over stuff and making noise. Zayn apologizes and says he likes their message about the power of love. Zayn leaves for the battle royal before Mike says the moment was ruined by Zayn.
  • Independence Day Battle Royal-So, the winner of this battle royal gets to face Kevin Owens, who is on commentary for this match, at Battleground for the United States Championship. Dolph Ziggler ends up being the first man eliminated, eating a discus clothesline from Luke Harper while on the apron before the commercial break. We come back to see Erick Rowan toss Fandango out of the ring. Rowan throws Tyler Breeze out next, but Fandango manages to catch him. Fandango rolls him back in the ring...just so he can throw him right out again. Rowan then tosses Sin Cara out of the ring onto them. Konnor gets booted out of the ring by Harper, who is then thrown out of the out of the ring by Mojo Rawley. The Hype Bros eliminate Rowan next, only for Rawley to throw Ryder over the top rope. Rawley is then booted over the top rope, leaving the final three as Sami Zayn, Tye Dillinger, and AJ Styles. Dillinger stomps away at both men before giving each of them a Tye Breaker. Dillinger tries to eliminate both men, but they both hold on. Tye tries to knock them off, only for Zayn to backdrop him out of the ring, leaving only him & Styles. Zayn hits a corner exploder suplex on Styles and calls for the Helluva Kick, but Styles dodges it and Zayn goes flying over the top rope. Zayn holds on and tries to suplex Styles from the apron, but Styles blocks it and hits a Pele Kick, knocking Zayn off the apron and giving him the win. After the match, Kevin Owens attacks Styles, only got Styles to hit an enziguri and go for the Styles Clash. Owens avoids it but leaves his title in the ring. Styles holds up the title to close out the show.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
