My Thoughts on NXT (7/12/17): Mass

  • Aleister Black vs BOBBY FISH!-Yes! One-half of reDRagon is in NXT! The two feel eachother out to start before Black goes to a wristlock. The two trade holds going back and forth. Black connects with a kick to the chest, which Fish responds to with multiple kicks of his own. Fish boots Black to the ropes before Black strikes away at Fish, leading to a running knee that sends Fish out of the ring. Black tries to suplex Fish back into the ring from the apron, but Fish blocks it with a knee before locking in a sleeper from the apron. The ref forces a break, after which Fish drops down and kicks Black's leg out from under him from ringside.
    It looked awesome. After a commercial break, we come back to Fish beating down Black in the ropes, following up with a slingshot senton for a near fall. Fish controls the match, working over Black's leg. Black mounts a comeback and connects with a big boot followed by multiple kicks to the chest. Black hits a springboard moonsault before hitting a jumping knee strike. Black sets up and connects with Black Mass for the three and the win. Pretty solid match.
  • In a WWE.com exclusive from last week, we see the fallout from the Ohno/Itami vs SAnitY match last week. Itami blames Ohno for their loss last week, which prompts Ohno to fire back, saying that Itami has only been blaming everyone since Takeover: Chicago and he's done trying to get through to him.
  • We get a vignette for the Street Profits, Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford.
  • In a  WWE.com video, we see the Velveteen Dream confuse Kayla Braxton for a homeless person and then refuse an interview because they aren't in the appropriate setting.
  • Vanessa Borne vs Jayme Hachey-Mae Young Classic Qualifier-"Who?" You might be asking. Well, Borne is a former Arizona Cardinals cheerleader who was trained by Rikishi & Gangrel. She's wrestled a few times in NXT under her real name Daniella Kamela. Hachey is better known as Jayme Jameson and is a former SHINE Tag Team Champion with Marti Belle as Better Than You. The two held the belts for over a year and have the longest reign in the title's history. Jameson starts off with a shoulder block, but Borne rolls through on a sunset flip and leaps over Hachey and kicks her in the back. Hachey responds with a sidewalk slam for a one count before locking a surfboard stretch. Borne fights to her feet and snapmares Hachey before double chopping Hachey. Borne follows up with a bad dropkick and a kick before hitting a spinning leg-hook slam for the three and the win. I think that's what it was. But anyway, this was bad. Borne is clearly green and still needs a lot of work.
  • In a WWE.com exclusive from last week, SAnitY attacks Drew McIntyre in the parking lot.
  • In his office, William Regal talks with Bobby Roode about his next challenger for the NXT Championship. Regal drops the fact that both Drew McIntyre and Killian Dain are undefeated, so Roode proposes he books McIntyre vs Dain to "see what happens." Regal agrees, saying that the winner will face Roode for the NXT Championship.
  • Outcomes Johnny Gargano, who still has the DIY entrance video.
    Takeover: Chicago was two months ago and they couldn't change his entrance video in that time? For real? He says he missed the fans and used to get excited when he heard his music hit. He says he never thought Tommaso Ciampa, someone he would take a bullet for would be the one to pull the trigger on him. He says he can't understand why Ciampa did what he did, but he says he's done dwelling on the past and he's looking towards the future. He says he needs to get back to wrestling and that he needs to be at Takeover: Brooklyn. He ends by saying he needs to be Johnny Wrestling again. A new entrance theme plays to close out the segment.
  • The Authors of Pain (c) with Paul Ellering vs Heavy Machinery-NXT Tag Team Championships-Over 1000 pounds between these two teams. Jesus. King Ross better get working on a Triple H version of "Vince McMahon Likes Big Sweaty Men." Tucker Knight & Akam start off with Akam beating down Knight in the corner. Knight turns the tables and hits two corner splashes, but a third is countered with a back elbow by Akam. Otis Dozovic & Rezar both tag in and go head to head. Rezar headbutts Dozovic and goes for a clothesline, but Dozovic doesn't budge. The two trade blows before Dozovic floors Rezar with a body block. Both teams have a standoff in the ring before the commercial break. We come back to the AOP beating down Knight in the corner. The AOP controls the match until Knight catches Rezar with a clothesline.Dozovic gets the hot tag and runs wild on Akam, flooring him with multiple body blocks before hitting a belly-to-belly suplex on Rezar. Dozovic follows up with a corner splash on both men, during which he tags in Knight before power slamming Akam. Dozovic follows up by bodyslamming Knight onto Akam, but Akam kicks out. Heavy Machinery goes for a double team, but Rezar cuts off Knight with a big boot before Akam hits a DDT on Dozovic. Rezar tags in for the Last Chapter and gets the three and the win to retain the belts. Pretty good, hard hitting match.After the match, SAnitY comes out before suddenly, pieces of paper. Mauro Ranallo theorizes that they are the pages from the Book of Pain.

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However...
