Worst in the World: Blood Runs Cold: WCW's Mortal Kombat Knockoff

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting the idea for this post. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
On October 8, 1992, Midway Games Inc. released Mortal Kombat, a fighting game, into North American arcades. Created by Ed Boon & John Tobias, the game was a massive success, quickly becoming one of the most popular & highest-grossing arcade games in the United States in 1993. In the 30 years since, Mortal Kombat has spawned a massive franchise with 14 video games, three live-action feature films, and multiple other pieces of media, making it the best-selling fighting game franchise worldwide and one of the highest-grossing media franchises ever at over $5 billion total. Among the characters that stand out in the franchise is Sub-Zero, an assassin with the ability to generate & control ice as a weapon that debuted in the original game. Why am I telling you all this? Well, one company that took notice of the success of Mortal Kombat was World Championship Wrestling, who decided to not only create a new gimmick "based on" that popular character for one of their wrestlers but to craft an entire storyline around a collection of Mortal Kombat-themed wrestlers. This was Blood Runs Cold.
In April 1996, WCW began airing vignettes on Monday Nitro for Glacier, the debut character for nine-year wrestling veteran Ray Lloyd who had previously wrestled on NWA & WCW house show tours, with the tagline "Blood Runs Cold." This is Glacier side by side with Sub-Zero:
Granted, they're not exactly the same (color schemes & attire aren't exact), but the similarities between the two are too close to ignore. And appearance isn't the only comparison you can make between the two. With a name like "Glacier", promos with a tagline featuring "cold", and a ring entrance featuring cooler blue lights and snow falling from the ceiling, a prominent part of the Glacier character, like Sub-Zero, was the ice & cooler temperatures. Some would even say sub-zero temperatures. On top of that, Glacier, who in reality is from Georgia, was given the backstory of having traveled to Japan to train in a martial arts-wrestling hybrid style and was billed from Fukuoka, Japan, essentially giving him an origin as a martial artist from an Asian country, just like Sub-Zero. Granted, Sub-Zero is canonically from China in the games, but it is still a noticeable creative choice for the wrestler who dresses like Sub-Zero, uses ice & cold like Sub-Zero, and is also a martial artist like Sub-Zero, to also be billed from the same continent, even though the wrestler portraying him is very clearly not Asian. Glacier's vignettes also began airing about five months after the release of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, the vignettes would've been airing in the leadup to the release of Mortal Kombat Trilogy, and, while the timeline doesn't line up perfectly, it's worth noting that rumors of the Sub-Zero standalone game, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, being in development would've started around the time Glacier debuted in WCW. Makes you think.
So, WCW fans waited for the debut of Glacier. They waited...and waited...and waited...
...
...
and waited.
The Blood Runs Cold vignettes aired on Nitro for 18 CONSECUTIVE WEEKS. Nearly five straight months of videos just hyping up the arrival of one wrestler. Why did they make this decision? Well, while there were obviously faults with Glacier, one thing that really knee-capped the gimmick was simply timing. As I said before, Glacier's vignettes started airing in late April. What would happen the very next month on Nitro? This guy showed up:
Scott Hall would make his return to WCW under his real name. The nWo storyline would start in May of 1996, meaning that WCW had a very clear new top storyline & creative focus around reality-based storylines. Someone who didn't factor into that new focus was the ice-wielding martial artist Glacier, meaning his planned debut in July was pushed all the way back to September. Further proof that Glacier didn't really factor into WCW in a big way anymore, his debut wasn't on pay-per-view, or even an episode of Nitro. He debuted on WCW Pro, essentially WCW's C-show that was below even WCW Saturday Night. It would be the equivalent of WWE airing months of vignettes hyping up an NXT star's debut on Raw or SmackDown, only for them to actually debut on Main Event.
After living up to his name by coming at a glacial pace, Glacier finally showed up on the September 9th episode of Nitro. He'd wrestle a variety of quick, uneventful squash matches until finally being given his first storyline in March 1997. This storyline, also dubbed "Blood Runs Cold", not only put Glacier at the forefront but introduced multiple other new characters to go along with him. While not the worst storyline, Blood Runs Cold never really caught on, as the jarring contrast between its over-the-top characters and the far more grounded-in-reality writing of the rest of the company (specifically the nWo) made the whole angle stick out in WCW. It also produced some pretty underwhelming matches, so let's talk about them.

Round 1

The first match I'll be taking a look at comes from Slamboree 1997. This match comes two months after "Blood Runs Cold" really kicked off and introduced three new characters to WCW. The first two were Mortis (Chris Kanyon in a mask), another martial artist from Asia that claimed to come from Glacier's past (which was never elaborated on) who also barred a noticeable resemblance to a Mortal Kombat character, in this case Reptile:
And his manager James Vandenberg (better known as the Sinister Minister in ECW & Father James Mitchell in TNA & Impact) Side note, I don't know if the name "Vandenberg" is an intentional reference, but there was actually a stunt performer on the first Mortal Kombat movie that came out in 1995 named Dominique Vandenberg. Glacier & Mortis faced off at that year's Uncensored pay-per-view with Glacier coming out on top, only to get attacked after the match by the debuting Wrath, better known as Adam Bomb in the WWF and later in WCW as Bryan Clark, one-half of KroniK. Again, unsure if this was a Mortal Kombat reference, but "Wrath" is very close to "Wraith" which is a species in the Mortal Kombat universe. Mortis & Wrath continued to attack Glacier, even stealing his helmet that was given to him by his karate instructor, before a rematch between Glacier & Mortis was set for Slamboree. While the Uncensored match wasn't all that great, it was still considered passable. This match, however, was not, earning a DUD (0) rating from Dave Meltzer.
Mortis & Vandenberg are out first, with Vandenberg saying they'll be sending Glacier back to his igloo in a body bag. Glaicer soon follows, and you can't really talk about Glacier without bringing up the entrance.
Just seeing it in photos doesn't do it justice, with blue laser lights and synthetic snow falling from the ceiling. It's actually a lot of fun and super extravagant for the time, but what really makes it stand out in the worst way is the cost. It's been estimated that the cost to produce this entrance was nearly half a million dollars. This, again, for a wrestler they postponed the big debut because they had something more interesting happening. Insane. Glacier rushes into the ring, only to get immediately stomped by Mortis before the bell rings. Mortis beats Glacier down in the corner, targeting his knee with kicks & knee strikes. Mortis continues stomping away at Glacier's knee before calling Wrath down to ringside. Wrath walks down the aisle as Mortis celebrates on the second rope, only for Glacier to grab him and hit an electric chair drop. Glacier fires up (or "freezes up", I guess), hitting two clotheslines and a back body drop before clotheslining Mortis out of the ring. Wrath then immediately runs into the ring and hits Glacier with Mortis' staff for the disqualification. Wrath then chokes Glacier with the staff.

The Verdict...

I wish I could tell you that was the end of the segment. This beatdown continues and proceeds to go on for TWO STRAIGHT MINUTES. The beatdown is LONGER THAN THE MATCH. It's not even an interesting beatdown, as Mortis & Wrath mostly just punch, kick, and put Glacier in submission holds for the majority of the time. There is a nice spot where Mortis hits a Famouser onto the ring steps, but that's the only interesting spot. Eventually, Wrath tries to hit the Death Penalty on Glacier, only for a debuting Ernest Miller to run in from the crowd. In a very confusing way of introducing Miller, Tony Schiavone says that a fan has run into the ring, only to quickly realize who Miller is, saying his name and referring to him as a three-time karate world champion. Doesn't really make a lot of sense for the commentator to know who Miller is & his accolades, but not recognize him. Miller makes the save for Glacier, hitting a jumping kick on Mortis before kicking Wrath out of the ring. Miller follows up with a spinning roundhouse kick on Mortis before security runs down.

The (Actual) Verdict

The match itself is pretty uneventful, as it's mostly just Mortis beating down Glacier before Glacier makes a brief comeback, which gets cut off by Wrath. It's not really anything, and the fact that the boring post-match beatdown goes on longer than the actual match makes the watch worse.

Round 2

The story far from over, Glacier would cross paths with the heel trio (that don't seem to have a team name) when he faced off with Wrath at the following month's Great American Bash, with the added stipulation that Mortis was handcuffed to the post to prevent interference. This match also failed to light the world on fire, receiving a three-quarters star rating from Dave Meltzer, and currently holds a 3.33 on Cagematch.net.
Wrath enters first, prompting Mike Tenay to blatantly lie on commentary, saying that he is "nearly seven feet tall." Bryan Clark is 6'6. I get that lying about heights & weights isn't uncommon in wrestling, but that's a pretty obscene stretch. Glacier enters and the match starts with Wrath forcing Glacier into the corner and beating him down. Glacier fights back, striking away at Wrath before his Irish whip is reversed. Glacier dodges a big boot and hits a spin kick and a heel kick before sending Wrath out of the ring with a single-leg dropkick. Glacier dives out of the ring onto Wrath before hitting a Cryonic Kick (a superkick). Wrath fights back, throwing Glacier into the barricade multiple times, but his attempt at whipping Glacier into the ring steps gets reversed, sending him head first into the stairs. Wrath actually hits the steps so hard with his head that there is a visible dent in the side of the steps, I'm not even kidding. Glacier follows up with a diving chop off the apron before rolling Wrath in the ring for a pinfall, which Wrath gets out of with a rope break.
Glacier goes back to striking away at Wrath, but an attempt at a corner splash misses when Mortis (still handcuffed) is able to pull Wrath out of the way. Wrath hits a really cool variation of a Stun Gun, dropping Glacier from a reverse powerbomb position. But that's enough cool spots, Wrath takes Glacier back to the corner to strike away at him. Wrath then locks in a headlock, and cuts off Glacier's attempt at a breakout with an STO. Glacier manages to fight to his feet, but Wrath manages to avoid Glacier's crossbody attempt, which sends Glacier out of the ring. Wrath follows up with a somersault dive off the apron before throwing Glacier back in the ring and following up with a diving lariat off the top rope. Not gonna lie, Wrath is kind of sick. Wrath attempts to cover Glacier with one foot on his chest, but Glacier kicks out. Wrath starts slapping Glacier, only for Glacier to grab Wrath by the throat. Wrath fights out and hits a backbreaker before going to the second rope for a diving elbow drop, but Glacier dodges it. Glacier follows up by sweeping Wrath's leg before hitting a back body drop, a spin kick, and a spinning jumping forearm for a two count.
Wrath fights back, hitting a sidewalk slam before going to the top rope. Glacier, however, stumbles into referee Nick Patrick, who falls into the ropes and causes Wrath to crotch himself on the top rope. Glacier takes advantage and hits a superplex, prompting Mortis to hop up on the apron. Glacier quickly knocks him down but walks right into a back suplex from Wrath. James Vandenberg then hops up on the apron to distract Patrick as Mortis tries to give Wrath a chain. Even though Wrath is standing right next to him, Mortis tosses the chain way over his head and across the ring, allowing Glacier to grab it. Glacier hits Wrath with the chain before  FUCKING MISSES THE FINISH. While Glacier hits the Cryonic Kick, we instead see Vandenberg fishing the handcuff keys out of Patrick's pockets to go unlock Mortis. Genuinely baffling mistake. Glacier makes the cover and gets the three. Glacier then gets hit by Mortis with the handcuff chain, allowing Mortis to handcuff him to the ring ropes. Wrath & Mortis double-team Glacier in the corner until more referees run out from the back to separate the three and free Glacier.

The Verdict

There are a couple of fun spots, but overall this isn't all that good. It's mostly just striking with a few moves in between. On top of that, the finish was clunky. It's nowhere near the worst match, but it's not anything that's really worth watching either.

Round 3

For the final match in this post, we have to jump forward all the way to World War 3 1998. By this point, WCW had decided that blood had run cold for long enough, and by January 1998, the angle was officially over. However, we would get one final taste of Blood Runs Cold in another match between Glacier & Wrath. This match came about when Wrath was supposed to wrestle Raven, but a post-Flock break-up Raven refused to wrestle. Kanyon, who had hung up the Mortis mask and had stuck by Raven post-Flock and was supposed to wrestle Glacier that night, opted to take his place, only to be easily beaten up by Wrath. A now-heel Glacier then came out, only for Wrath to also take him out. They actually still ended up doing Glacier vs Kanyon, with Kanyon getting the win, so now Glacier vs Wrath happens at World War 3. Could Glacier finally get a good singles match in his last singles pay-per-view match? A half-star rating from Dave Meltzer and a 3.83 rating on Cagematch says no, but let's take a look for ourselves.
During Wrath's entrance, Mike Tenay shows he learned from the Great American Bash and says Wrath is around 6'8. That's still inflated, but a lot more believable than saying he's seven feet tall. The match starts with a long stand-off before a lock-up, which ends with Wrath pushing out & throwing Glacier right out of the ring to a pretty big pop. Glacier re-enters the ring and lands some kicks & chops on Wrath before hitting a dropkick & posing. Wrath, however, doesn't go down, and floors Glacier with a chop, sending Glacier rolling out of the ring. Glacier tries to get back in the ring, only for Wrath to send him off the apron and into the barricade with a knee strike. Wrath follows Glacier out of the ring, where he shrugs off Glacier's strikes before reversing an Irish whip, sending Glacier over the barricade & into the crowd. Props to Glacier here, he is bumping big time for Wrath in this match.
Wrath enters the crowd as well to toss Glacier back over the barricade before throwing him back into the ring. Glacier pounces on Wrath when he gets in the ring, but another Irish whip attempt gets reversed, sending him into the corner before Wrath hits him with a clothesline, which Glacier bumps for with the Rikishi twisting-flip bump. Wrath starts stomping away at Glacier in the corner before stepping on Glacier's throat & choking him against the ropes. Wrath elbows Glacier across the apron twice before whipping him across the ring to the opposite corner. Glacier tries to fight back, but Wrath floors him with a clothesline, using the ropes for leverage when he makes the cover, but Glacier kicks out. Wrath throws Glacier out of the ring where he chokes Glacier with a camera cable. Back in the ring, Wrath beats down Glacier in the corner before putting on a headlock. Glacier fights back, avoiding a corner splash and hitting a heel kick before catching Wrath with a Cryonic Kick. Glacier sets up for his submission finisher the Ice Pick (a thumb spike), but Wrath blocks it and quickly hits the Meltdown (a pumphandle powerslam) for the three and the win.

The Verdict

I'll be honest, this was pretty fun. It's obviously not a great match, but I thought there was a lot of fun wrestling, and the match did a good job of putting Wrath over. This is going toward the top of the list, easily.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. Next week, as I mentioned in the Countdown to Armageddon post, I'll be venturing over to WCW's attempt at creating their own signature battle royal match; The World War 3 match. Since the World War 3 matches are pretty lengthy matches, I'll be splitting the four matches into two separate posts. So next week, I'll be looking at the 1995 & 1996 matches, then the 1997 & 1998 matches the following week. Stay tuned.

  1. What do you think of Bray Wyatt return at extreme Rulesw

    1. I thought it was great, from the build-up to the actual return. The pop he got when he pulled the hood off was insane, maybe the biggest since CM Punk debuted in AEW. I'm optimistic about what's to come with him, especially since his return got the big spot to close the pay-per-view.

  2. Another fun read as always, can't wait to see you tackle the World War 3 matches.

I have a match for you: Jake Roberts vs Bad News Brown Summerslam 1990

    1. I'll add it to the list! I actually just got a recommendation for Randy Savage vs Dusty Rhodes from the same show, and looking over the rest of the card, there's a couple more matches I can cover, so I'll probably be doing a multi-match post. Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. Thanks for covering Glacier, CJ! Do you feel there was a time in wrestling where the Glacier character would have worked out? Or was this doomed from the start?

    1. That's a tough one. I feel like the only way Glacier would've worked (and been taken seriously) was if he had debuted before Mortal Kombat came out (so before 1992), as the Sub-Zero comparisons were really too much to overcome for him right off the bat. At the same time, however, I don't know if the Glacier character could've ever been created without Mortal Kombat & Sub-Zero existing first. If there was place I think Glacier would've had the best chance of succeeding in general (i.e. getting over), it would probably been if he came up when CHIKARA was up & running. A Sub-Zero copy wouldn't be too out of place on a roster with a colony of wrestling ants and an evil marching band leader. It's obviously not as grand as a major company like WCW, but that audience was a lot more open to wackier, out of the box gimmicks like Glacier was.

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Worst in the World: Trash at the Beach

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Just over a month ago, I briefly covered the massive success the WWF was having in 1999. Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock are at the top of the card. Triple H is on the rise to the main event. Mankind is playing the ultimate likable & respected babyface. Names like the Undertaker, Kane, and the Big Show are all major players. The undercard is stacked with big names like D-Generation X, D'Lo Brown, and Ken Shamrock, rising stars like The Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian, and new signings like Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and the Dudley Boyz. The WWF was so red hot in 1999 that even an all-time bad WrestleMania in WrestleMania XV couldn't slow them down. But there was one other factor that made 1999 such a good year for the WWF; the fact that their main competitor, WCW, was beginning to crack. At the same time the WWF was reaching the highest heights they'd ever reache
