Rest in Peace, Antonio Inoki, a true icon of professional wrestling
(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
(NOTE: Hey everyone, I just wanted to remind everyone that October is going to be "A Very WCW October" here at the Wrestling Section, meaning that I'll be posting every week instead of every other week. Now, onto the post!)
On the October 18th, 2000 episode of Thunder, WCW decided to put on the Countdown to Armageddon, a 30-man (keep that number in mind) timed battle royal where a new person enters every 30 seconds, with the winner receiving a WCW World Heavyweight Championship match on the October 30th episode of Monday Nitro. The reason?...I don't really know. There's not really any storyline that goes along with the match. There's not even a hype package before the match, and outside of a few backstage promos on the show, there's barely even any promotion of the match at all. It just kind of happens. Let's get into this.
Before the match starts, Tony Schiavone says that it all comes down to 30 men. I only mention that because I just want to reiterate that you should remember that. 30. Men. Remember it. Entrant #1 is the current Cruiserweight Champion "Above Average" Mike Sanders. "Above Average" has to be up there with the lamest nicknames in wrestling history. Proof that wrestling is scripted, Sanders' current rival, and his opponent at Halloween Havoc for the role of WCW commissioner, Ernest "The Cat" Miller, is entrant #2. Sanders rushes Miller as soon as he gets in the ring, but Miller takes control when he ducks a clothesline and hits a thrust kick. Miller follows up with an elbow before punching Sanders into the corner, where he hits 10 punches in the corner before we get proof that wrestling is scripted #2, as entrant #3, Shawn Stasiak, enters the match.
Stasiak, who is teammates with Sanders in the Natural Born Thrillers, quickly runs over to save Sanders, only for Miller to turn his attention to him. The Thrillers, however, end up gaining the advantage on Miller before proof that wrestling is scripted moment #3, as Chuck Palumbo, who is also part of the Natural Born Thrillers, enters at #4. Right off the bat, you can tell that 30 seconds between entrants is way too fast. Nothing gets a chance to settle or make an impact in the match because there is always someone new coming in. Despite the 3-on-1 advantage, infighting between Stasiak & Palumbo allows Miller to survive before Disqo (Disco Inferno) enters at #5. Disqo takes the fight to Palumbo & Stasiak, but quickly gets double-teamed by the two. Proof that wrestling is scripted #4, entrant #6 is Alex Wright, Disqo's Boogie Knights tag partner. Did nobody think to space these entrances out? All but one entrant in this match has had some sort of storyline relation to one another, whether it be a rivalry or a tag partner.
Wright makes the save for Disqo as Miller takes out Disqo with a flurry of kicks. Entrant #7 is Crowbar during his time hanging around That 70's Guy Mike Awesome, a gimmick I genuinely did not know was a thing before this match, who runs in and takes the fight to everyone he comes across. Tony Schiavone calls him a "Psycho Gas Station Attendant" on commentary, a nickname that greatly offends fellow commentator Stevie Ray for some reason. Entrant #8 is Big Ron (Ron Harris) who also runs in and beats up everyone. Jesus Christ, proof that wrestling is scripted #5, entrant #9 is Heavy D (Don Harris), the brother and tag partner of Big Ron, who also runs in and beats up anyone he comes across. I wish something interesting would happen in this match. Recent American turncoat & Team Canada member Jim Duggan is entrant #10...who also just runs in and punches people. I hate this. Oh my fucking god, proof that wrestling is scripted #6, entrant #11 is Lt. Loco (Chavo Guerrero Jr.), who is part of the Misfits in Action, who Jim Duggan turned on to join Team Canada at Fall Brawl and is still feuding with. I know Vince Russo's bad writing around this team is well known, but I'm shocked the guy who's become notorious for the "swerves, bro" could write something this formulaic and obvious.
Finally...mercifully...something interesting happens, as Kevin Nash enters at #12, who dumps Duggan & Loco out of the ring for the first eliminations of the match. Ernest Miller then quickly tosses Mike Sanders out of the ring, only for Nash to dump him out right after. David Flair enters at #13 as Disqo eliminates Crowbar. Disqo then very blatant tells Nash to throw him over the top rope...so he does, eliminating Wright along with him. Meanwhile, Chuck Palumbo eliminates both Big Ron & Heavy D (good) so he & Stasiak can go back to their Natural Born Thrillers in fighting. Stasiak punches Palumbo, who very obviously jumps over the top rope, only for Stasiak to jump over the top rope himself when Nash turns his attention to him. Corporal Cajun (Lash LeRoux) of the Misfits in Action enters at #14 as Nash shrugs off Flair's offense and eliminates him with ease. Cajun hits a back elbow on Nash, which is more than I thought he'd get on him. That's enough selling for Nash though, as he quickly hits a big boot before tossing Cajun out of the ring.
Entrant #15 is Kwee Wee, accompanied to the ring by Paisley (Sharmell), who quickly gets clotheslined and tossed out of the ring. Entrant #16 is Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio fares better than he did in the New Blood Gauntlet, hitting a springboard dropkick and knocking Nash off his feet, only for Nash to floor him with a big boot. Nash goes for the Jackknife Powerbomb, but Mysterio fights out of it and holds on for entrant #17...Booker T...who is the current World Heavyweight Champion...I don't really know why he's in this match. The reward is a title shot...for a title he already has. The commentators never explain it either. WCW, everybody. Booker takes the fight to Nash before entrant #18, "That 70's Guy" Mike Awesome enters the match. Awesome, Booker, and Mysterio gang up on Nash until Sting enters at #19, who joins in on the beatdown. Awesome & Booker hold Nash in place for Sting to hit two Stinger Splashes before Mysterio hits another springboard dropkick. Just in case you forgot, proof that wrestling is scripted #7, Jeff Jarrett, who Sting is facing at Halloween Havoc (see Worst in the World #117) enters at #20 just as everybody teams up to eliminate Nash. Also, completely out of nowhere, Scott Steiner runs down and gets in the ring, attacking Booker. I genuinely don't know if Steiner is part of this match. The Internet Wrestling Database says he is, Cagematch.net says he isn't. The commentators just say Steiner "didn't want to wait", but there are never any numbers that show up on the screen like they do in the Royal Rumble, so I have no idea if he's actually supposed to be in the match. Jarrett enters, quickly brawling with Sting before Sting stupidly takes himself out of the match when his clothesline takes both him & Jarrett out of the ring.
Meanwhile, Awesome & Mysterio dump both Booker & Steiner out of the ring right before Billy Kidman enters at #21. The Filthy Animals teammates Mysterio & Kidman double team Awesome, with Mysterio hitting a springboard moonsault before Lance Storm enters at #22. Nothing really happens before Big Vito enters at #23...nothing really happens before one half of the Tag Team Champions Sean O'Haire of the Natural Born Thrillers enters at #24...nothing really happens before proof that wrestling is scripted #8, O'Haire's tag team partner & the other half of the Tag Team Champions Mark Jindrak enters at #25. Jindrak doesn't even get the usual "run in and brawl", immediately getting jumped by the Filthy Animals when he slides in the ring. Jindrak eats a dropkick from Mysterio before he brawls with Kidman. Proof that wrestling is scripted #9, Konnan of the Filthy Animals (who are feuding with the Natural Born Thrillers) enters the match at #26, quickly stomping away at O'Haire before Jindrak hits him from behind. The Animals & Thriller brawl before, apparently, KroniK (Brian Adams & Bryan Clarke) both enter at #27. Sure, why not, the company's dying anyway. Adams immediately gets a pop-up powerbomb reversed with a hurricanrana by Kidman. Adams, however, ends up getting the better of the exchange by tossing Kidman out of the ring, with Clarke eliminating Mysterio & Konnan soon after.
Awesome follows this up by eliminating Lance Storm before KroniK eliminates Vito. O'Haire, Jindrak, and KroniK quadruple team Awesome before Adams piledrives him. Suddenly, Goldberg's music hits and he runs down to the ring. He is not the next entrant, however, as the current storyline was that he couldn't challenge for the World Heavyweight title unless he replicated his previous undefeated streak, and his next loss would force him to retire. Goldberg runs through O'Haire & Jindrak before KroniK double-teams him. O'Haire & Jindrak try to eliminate Awesome, but Awesome ducks a clothesline and sends both men out of the ring. Meanwhile, Goldberg hits the Spear on Clarke as Adams slips out of the ring. Goldberg throws Clarke over the top rope as Adams tries to hit him with a chair. Awesome, however, grabs the chair out of his hands, leaving him open to a Spear from Goldberg. Awesome & Goldberg both clothesline Adams out of the ring.
After that long pause between entrants, up next is entrant #28...nobody. There are no more entrants. The match is over. Mike Awesome won. The commentators explicitly said it was a 30-man match. This "30-man" match only has 28 men in it, two of which enter at the same spot. If you count Steiner as an entrant despite him not having an actual entrance, then it's 29 men, which, if my math is correct, is still not 30. How do you fuck up counting how many wrestlers are in a match? This was WCW in 2000.
The Verdict
Dog shit. What an incomprehensible shit show. Pretty much every part of this match is bad. The first third of the match is blatant filler, just a bunch of lower card guys filling the ring and waiting for the big star in Kevin Nash to come in and demolish everyone. The second third of the match starts with more of Nash just running through jobbers, and while it picks up when guys like Sting, Booker T, and Mike Awesome get into the match, it still suffers from the rapid pace and the confusing bit with Steiner. The final third is just as much filler as the first, even with the bigger names coming in. All of this along with the quick entrances, the complete lack of anything interesting happening, the lazy booking with teammates and rivals coming out right after each other, and the various other confusing decisions (Why does Steiner randomly run in? Why do KroniK come out together at the same spot? Why are there only 27 or 28 entrants in this 30 man match?) makes this an absolutely miserable watch. I'd actually argue this is the worst battle royal I've ever seen. Worse than the 2015 Royal Rumble, and even worse than the Miss WrestleMania match at WrestleMania 25. Don't watch this nightmare of a wrestling experience.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. Next week, since it's the 30-year anniversary of Mortal Kombat's arcade release, I'll be taking a look a few matches from WCW's "Blood Runs Cold" storyline, an angle centered around the company's not-so-subtle knockoff of an MK character. Stay tuned...
I don't know what made WCW think Glacier would attract new fans, even gamers would of laughed at him.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's back to Punjabi Prison for you my friend because my next request is Undertaker vs Big Show (Great American Bash 2006)
What's even wilder is how much money WCW invested in him. From what I've read, his entrance alone cost half a million dollars.
DeleteAlso, I'll defiantly add the Taker/Big Show Punjabi Prison match to the list. Since I've already done the Randy Orton/Jinder Mahal one, I might have to throw in the Batista/Khali one from No Mercy 07 just to complete the trilogy. Thanks for the suggestion!
Half a million dollars!? Yep sounds like WCW to me, wasting alot of money on someone who would unfortanately become a jobber go figure!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome man it's always a pleasure!
Check out the Wrestling Bios video on Glacier, it is very interesting! Glacier was the first character that particular writer/promoter worked on, so he wanted to make him memorable. And if there is an individual case study of why WCW failed, Glacier can be used to refer to a lot of the downfall: overspending, spending too long to build, unclear direction, and many unsatisfactory payoffs. People thought the Veer Mahan build was too long and overdone, wait until you see Glacier.
DeleteSide note, good call on the Punjabi Prison suggestions. My friend went to Orton-Jinder, and he told me that the worst part about it was how difficult it was to see. Granted he didn't miss much, but bamboo isn't the best material for fans to see through.
I'll give it a look, now i'm intrigued to see how the Glacier build is worse then Veer Mahaan's!
DeleteYeah alot of people couldn't see anything because of all the bamboo and some members of the crowd were leaving because of it. I chose it because of it being the first especially since it was a gimmick match dedicated to Khali but because of not being medically cleared he was replaced by Big Show. I also think think Show crying and whimpering over the actual thing made him look like a chump considering he was ECW champion but, he never freaked out in the far more intimidating Hell in a Cell a couple of months later.
Totally agree with the Wrestling Bios suggestion, they are great.
DeleteYES WE ARE GETTING GLACIER! If you want, check out the Wrestling Bios channel again as they have a video all about Glacier there! And credit to him for coming back and having a few matches!
ReplyDeleteBut yes, this was an absolute mess. And the 30 motif was so clear to begin with: 30 man BR, 30 seconds between entrants, match on the 30th, and yet they managed to make this absolutely SUCK. But I am intrigued to see how this stacks up against the WW3 matches in your eyes, because one of the things that makes those matches so difficult to watch is that there is too much happening at once.
PS Can we just acknowledge that WCW managed to put on a BR concept worse than the Reverse Battle Royal?
Hey, I'm not sure if you have it planed as a part of our very WCW October celebration, but Bash at the Beach '99 had some absolute bombs. The first three matches sucked, the main event was a minus according to Papa Meltzer, and I don't know if this has made the recommendation list yet but I saw a youtube video that mentions this travesty: The Junkyard Invitational.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have Bash at the Beach '99 for this month (but I do have another pay-per-view with multiple bad matches for the last week of the month) but I'll definitely add it to the list. Just looking over that match ratings (both Meltzer & Cagematch) and the fact that only one match has anything close to a good rating there's definitely plenty of material there. Thanks for the suggestions!
DeleteI got dream match gone wrong for you as a request
ReplyDeleteRandy Savage vs Dusty Rhodes Summerslam 1990
I'll add it to the list. I knew that match was super disappointing but I never realized it had a negative star rating from Meltzer. Thanks for the suggestion!
DeleteYour welcome!
