RAW vs Nitro #20 (1/29/96)

Welcome back to another edition of RAW vs Nitro. Click here to read the last edition if you missed it. I decided to take a while off for Christmas, but now it's time to get back to work. Let's get into it, this is RAW vs Nitro #20!

RAW

  • British Bulldog with Jim Cornette vs Diesel-Diesel backs Bulldog into the corner to start and knees him before whipping him across the ring and clotheslining him. Diesel catches Bulldog off a crossbody attempt and bodyslams him before clotheslining him out of the ring. Bulldog yanks Diesel legs out from under him and rams them into the ring post before stomping away at his legs. Bulldog continues to work over Diesel's legs until Yokozuna walks down to ringside. After a commercial break, Bulldog locks in a single leg Boston crab. Yokozuna gets a shot on Diesel after Bulldog distracts the referee and Bulldog continues the beat down before kicking Diesel out of the ring. Yokozuna rolls Diesel back in the ring as Bulldog takes off the top turnbuckle. Bulldog goes to ram Diesel's head into the post, but Diesel reverses it, slams Bulldog's head into the turnbuckle, and gives Bulldog Snake Eyes into the turnbuckle. Diesel gets the visual three, but Cornette distracts the referee as Yokozuna tries to leg drop Bulldog. Diesel dodges and Yokozuna accidentally leg drops Bulldog, allowing Diesel to get the win. A pretty whatever match, not much to talk about.
  • Dok Hendrix says that despite the threat of legal action, we'll be seeing another Billionaire Ted sketch tonight...f*ck. Hendrix then hypes up the steel cage match at the Royal Rumble match between Bret Hart and Diesel for the WWF Championship. Hendrix throws it to Hart, who says he used to respect Diesel, but not anymore. He says Diesel is constantly interfering in his matches and they'll settle it once and for all at In Your House. He also calls Diesel a "big dummy." Back to Hendrix, he hypes up the match-up between Shawn Michaels and Owen Hart with Michaels' WrestleMania title shot on the line and announces the infamous "Cry Baby match" between Razor Ramon and the 1-2-3 Kid, where the loser gets diapered and feed with a bottle. There's a reason they only did this once. Also, Hendrix announces that Duke "The Dumpster" Droese will face Hunter Hearst Helmsley, which came about after Helmsley attacked Droese and cut his hair.
  • We get a press conference with Billionaire Ted, the Huckster, and the Nacho Man. You probably don't need me to tell you how bad it was. Reporters slam Ted for running Nitro his "wrasslin' show" against RAW and claim he's only running Nitro to run the WWF out of business. They then ask the Nacho Man and the Huckster who will win their match at WrestleMania, and the two start to fight. It ends with a "to be continued"
  • The Bodydonnas with Sunny vs The Godwinns with Hillbilly Jim-This marks the RAW debut of Phineas I. Godwinn (P.I.G). Henry & Skip start, with Henry going for a gorilla press slam on Skip, only for Zip to enter the ring and kick his leg out from under him. The Bodydonnas double suplex on Henry, but miss on the Rocket Launcher attempt. At ringside, Sunny flirts with Hillbilly Jim, so Jim comes over to her with a bucket of slop. Phineas gets in the ring and runs wild and hits the Slop Drop on Skip for the win. Sunny gets in the ring (for some reason) and the Godwinns & Jim force her to do-si-do before she runs off.
  • Next week, Bret Hart puts the WWF Championship on the line against the Undertaker.
  • Jim Cornette & Clarence Mason cut a promo claiming that Vader's suspension is unlawful and that Vader was defending himself after Gorilla Monsoon put his hands on him. Mason also says he will pursue criminal & civil actions if the suspension is not dropped.
  • Vince McMahon brings out the interim president of the WWF now that Gorilla Monsoon...Roddy Piper! Piper says that things are getting out of hand in the WWF before saying that the current roster has some of the toughest & greatest athletes. He says the only thing the new superstars need is to be straightened out. He then takes out his rule list, then puts it away because he's never lived by rules in his life. He says he loves the fans and that they're in good hands with him. Piper then gives McMahon an airplane spin for no reason.
  • We get a vignette for MANKIND! He says that many of life's great questions remain unanswered, like why is he the way he is and why are people so frightened of him. It's actually a pretty creepy vignette.
  • Yokozuna with Jim Cornette vs Shawn Michaels-Yokozuna over powers Michaels to start before Michaels uses his speed to take control and knock Yokozuna out of the ring. Michaels then takes a victory lap as Owen Hart comes down to the ring before the commercial break. We come back to Michaels avoiding a splash in the corner before hitting a double axe handle and a moonsault for a near fall. Yokozuna responds by whipping Michaels out of the ring, where Hart stomps on him and rams him into the ring post as Cornette distracts the referee. Michaels gets back in the ring, where Yokozuna puts on the shoulder claw. Michaels is able to fight out, but Yokozuna is able to knock him back down before another commercial break. We come back to Michaels dodging a leg drop from Yokozuna. Michaels goes to the top rope, but Yokozuna dodges a splash. Michaels punches away at Yokozuna and knocks him off his feet before going for a double ax handle again, only to get caught and rammed into the corner. Cornette distracts the referee again as Yokozuna holds Michaels up for Hart, only for Michaels to dodge it, causing Hart to hit Yokozuna with a spinning heel kick. This allows Michaels to hit Sweet Chin Music for the win. Again, it's pretty much just a match. Nothing really worth watching. After the match, Yokozuna & Hart argue as Cornette & the British Bulldog tr to calm them down. Camp Cornette turns their attention to Shawn Michaels, but Diesel runs down to make the save. Vince McMahon goes to interview Jim Cornette, who says that there is no dissension in Camp Cornette before challenging Michaels & Diesel to a match against Bulldog & Yokozuna. The two accept as the show closes
That's it for RAW, onto Nitro.

  • Ric Flair with Jimmy Hart vs Hulk Hogan with Miss Elizabeth-Yes, Miss Elizabeth is in WCW now, debuting at Clash of the Champions XXXII to accompany Hogan & Randy Savage to the ring for their match against Flair & The Giant. Along with Elizabeth, Hogan also comes out with Woman, Debra McMichael (Mongo's wife), and his own wife Linda. Hogan overpowers Flair twice before he shoves Flair to the ground. Flair starts chopping Hogan, but the chops do nothing and Hogan backbody drops Flair before clotheslining him out of the ring. Outside of the ring, Flair pokes Hogan in the eye but gets clotheslined for his troubles. Back in the ring, Flair pleads with Hogan, so Hogan beats him down until being pulled off by the referee. That allows Flair to go after Hogan's knee before the commercial break. We come back to Flair chopping & beating down Hogan. Flair goes to the top rope, but Hogan meets him up there and tosses him to the mat. Hogan tries to fight back, but Flair cuts off his comeback and continues to attack Hogan's knee. Hart tries to hit Hogan's knee when the referee is distracted with Flair, but Hogan kicks him off and runs wild on Flair before throwing him over the turnbuckle and clotheslining him off the apron. Hogan leaves the ring and beats Flair around ringside until Flair pokes him in the eyes. Flair gets Hogan back in the ring...just so he throw him back out, where Hart chokes & stomps on Hogan. Back in the ring, Flair hits a knee breaker and locks in the Figure Four. Hogan is able to turn it over, forcing Flair to break the hold. The two block each other's suplexes before Hogan hits a suplex. Hogan no sells Flair's offense until Flair hits him with a back elbow. Flair hits a side suplex for a near fall and Hogan Hulks Up. Punch. Punch. Punch. Big boot. Leg drop. Hogan makes the cover and gets the visual three, but the referee gets distracted by Jimmy Hart on the apron. Arn Anderson runs down and tries to use some brass knuckles, but Hogan stops him and punches him out of the ring. At the same time, Hart grabs Elizabeth, allowing Anderson to take one of her shoes.
Anderson hands Flair the shoe and Flair jabs Hogan in the face to get the win. Fine match but it got a little too ridiculous at the end. Randy Savage runs down to assist a bloody Hogan.
  • The Faces of Fear vs The Road Warriors-Now that the Warlord has left WCW, the Barbarian can stop being a Super Assassin and start teaming with Meng. Also, the Road Warriors are back in WCW! Which means no more Hawk singles matches! Animal & Barbarian start off with Barbarian shoving Animal off. Animal does the same right after before Barbarian hits a big boot. Animal comes back with a powerslam followed by an elbow drop. Meng & Hawk tag in as Meng proceeds to strike Hawk to death. Meng hits a piledriver, which Hawk COMPLETELY NO SELLS! PISS OFF! Hawk hits a powerslam of his own and a fist drop before Meng rolls out of the ring. Animal tags in and he & Meng trade wrist locks until Barbarian kicks Animal in the back from the apron, allowing Meng to take control. The Faces of Fear beat down Animal until Animal counters a flying nothing from Barbarian with a clothesline. Hawk gets the hot tag and runs wild on the Faces of Fear. Barbarian sets up Hawk on the top rope for a superplex, but Animal sneaks up behind him and sets him up for the Doomsday Device. However, Meng shoves Hawk down to the mat, allowing Barbarian to avoid the move and piledrive Animal. Barbarian goes for another one, but Hawk saves Animal with a diving clothesline and gets the win. The end of the match was pretty fun & exciting, and the rest was alright except for Hawk completely no selling a piledriver.
  • Mean Gene interviews Kevin Sullivan & Hugh Morrus in the ring. Kevin Sullivan gives out about Brian Pillman being a prick and about Arn Anderson not controlling him. Anderson & Pillman come out and Sullivan demands Anderson discipline Pillman. Anderson says he's going to take care of it and yells at Pillman for not being out in the ring when Flair beat Hogan. Anderson then decides to give Pillman some "tough love" and takes off his belt, only for Sullivan & Morrus to attack Anderson & Pillman. Sullivan takes the belt and whips Pillman as Anderson gives Morrus a DDT. Anderson & Pillman get back in the ring, where Anderson demands a match with Sullivan & Morrus. Pillman says he got them into the mess and he'll get them out.
  • Mean Gene interviews Sister Sherri to discuss what happened at Sherri & Col. Rob Parker's wedding. This happened on Clash of the Champions, so long story short, Madusa showed up and ruined the wedding. We then see Madusa climb up onto the top rope, which leads perfectly into...
  • Sister Sherri vs Madusa-Madusa hits a diving crossbody as soon as the match starts and the fight quickly goes to the outside, where Madusa throws Sherri into the steps. Madusa follows that up with a suplex on the outside before the two trade strikes. Back in the ring, Madusa knocks Sherri down and kicks her before Sherri hits a double leg drop to the midsection. Sherri goes to the top rope, but Madusa meets her up there. Madusa tries to throw Sherri to the mat, but Sherri turns it into a cradle for the win. After the match, Madusa hits a huge German suplex and beats down Sherri before the referee's stop her. That was fairly sh*t.
  • Randy Savage (c) vs The Giant-WCW World Heavyweight Championship EXCEPT NOPE! Savage attacks the Giant from behind before the match starts, so the referee throws the match out. Ric Flair runs down and beats Savage down around ringside. Flair takes Savage into the ring, where he & Giant beat down on Savage. After TWO & A HALF MINUTES of this uninterrupted beatdown, a bandaged up Hulk Hogan finally runs down with a chair and batters the Giant.
Eric Bischoff says he looked like a mummy, so I guess someone at WCW finally found out what a mummy was. Hogan then proceeds to beat down every member of the Dungeon of Doom with a chair. Flair marches over to the commentary booth, where Flair is so heated he can barely get his promo out. The Giant comes up and he cuts a bizarre promo of his own. "HOGAN! I'M GONNA TAKE YOUR BONES AND MAKE MY BREATH! YOUR BODY, HEART, AND SOUL IS MINE FOREVER!" The f*ck does that mean? Flair says he's going to take the world title and Elizabeth from the Savage one more time. Bischoff & Mongo leave the announce table as Flair goes absolutely mental.
And that's about it. This one is tough. RAW was pretty bland, but Nitro was just so ridiculous at points. Specifically that ending, which was just completely bonkers. In the end, I'll give it to Nitro cause it had a few enjoyable matches.

That's it for this edition of RAW vs Nitro. Stay tuned for the next one!

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Worst in the World: Trash at the Beach

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Just over a month ago, I briefly covered the massive success the WWF was having in 1999. Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock are at the top of the card. Triple H is on the rise to the main event. Mankind is playing the ultimate likable & respected babyface. Names like the Undertaker, Kane, and the Big Show are all major players. The undercard is stacked with big names like D-Generation X, D'Lo Brown, and Ken Shamrock, rising stars like The Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian, and new signings like Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and the Dudley Boyz. The WWF was so red hot in 1999 that even an all-time bad WrestleMania in WrestleMania XV couldn't slow them down. But there was one other factor that made 1999 such a good year for the WWF; the fact that their main competitor, WCW, was beginning to crack. At the same time the WWF was reaching the highest heights they'd ever reache
