Welcome back to another edition of RAW vs Nitro. Click here to read the last edition if you missed it. Now, I had to skip a week because Nitro didn't have a show on March 4th, 1996, so now we're here. So let's get into it, this is RAW vs Nitro #24.
RAW
- Savio Vega vs Steve Austin with Ted Dibiase-Steve Austin didn't get an entrance. STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN DID NOT GET A TELEVISED ENTRANCE. I know he's not a megastar yet, but that just so odd. Also, you may have noticed that he's no longer the Ringmaster. That name was dropped with no explanation. The two lock up and go back and forth before Austin floors Vega with a shoulder tackle. Vega comes back with a crossbody for a near fall before hitting two arm drags, but Austin regains control by dodging the third attempt, causing Vega to sell like he just got turned inside out by a clothesline.
Austin did not touch him. He took this bump entirely on his own. - We get a clip from before the show where Mark Henry gorilla press slams Jerry Lawler.
- Roddy Piper is out to address the crowd..but before he comes out, Goldust & Marlena come out to the ring. Piper comes out and Vince McMahon interviews Piper, who asks Goldust what his problem is. He mocks Goldust's attire, wig, and face paint before implying that Goldust is a prostitute. He says Goldust only wants attention before telling him his mind games aren't working. He then calls himself a lesbian and says Goldust sucks at playing the bagpipes. This is going a bit off the rails. He tells Goldust not to mess with him before Goldust takes the mic. Goldust says he wants a piece of Piper before getting on his knees and getting very close to Piper. Goldust starts to lift up Piper's kilt, but Piper stops him and brings him to his feet. Piper shoves Goldust, so Goldust slaps him. Piper slaps him back and says he'll give him a fight.
- The Godwinns with Hillbilly Jim vs Alex Porteau & Jerry Mead-At one point, Phineas goes nuts for no reason and attacks both his opponents before being calmed down by Henry. Henry tags in and quickly wins with a Slop Drop.
- We get a video showing Shawn Michaels back in San Antonio, training with his old trainer Jose Lothario. We then get a video of Bret Hart of back in Calgary with his father Stu Hart in the Hart Dungeon. Something to note is that while Michaels spends the time talking with Lothario and how winning the WWF Championship is his life long dream, Hart mostly talks about how Michaels is completely inferior to him and won't beat him at WrestleMania XII.
- We find out from Vince McMahon that the Ultimate Warrior will face Hunter Hearst Helmsley at WrestleMania XII. Speaking of Hunter Hearst Helmsley
- Hunter Hearst Helmsley with Michelle Snickler vs Ben Greer-Hehe...Snickler. Anyway, Helmsley easily wins the match with a Pedigree.
- Scheme Gene reports on the "Geriatric match" at WrestleMania XII between the Huckster and the Nacho Man. He says that "women's shoes and handcuffs will be banned from the match before showing the Huckster failing to work out. Nacho Man instead tries to cover up his bald spot. Scheme Gene also announces that Billionaire Ted will be the referee for the match. These are still sh*t.
- Owen Hart & The British Bulldog with Jim Cornette vs Yokozuna & The Undertaker with Paul Bearer-Undertaker & Yokozuna beat down Hart & Bulldog to start before whipping them into eachother. Yokozuna hits a leg drop on Bulldog before Diesel comes down to the ring. Diesel attacks Paul Bearer on the outside before going back to the back, which prompts the Undertaker to follow him before the commercial break. We come back to see that Hart & Bulldog have taken control of the match due to the absence of the Undertaker. Yokozuna starts to mount some offense, only for Vader to come down and attack him to cause a DQ. Ahmed Johnson runs down to the ring and runs through Camp Cornette before Jake Roberts runs down to the ring to even the odds. The brawl ends with the babyfaces beating down Camp Cornette until they leave the ring. Vader smashes a chair against the ring posts before throwing it against the steps.
Nitro
- Jim Duggan vs The Giant with Jimmy Hart-Duggan goes right after the Giant, but the Giant no sells all of his offense and throws him out of the ring. Duggan tries to dive at the Giant off the apron, but the Giant catches him and throws him into the ring post. Back in the ring, the Giant continues to beat down Duggan. As this is happening, someone tries to hop the barricade. But it's not just anybody... It's Brian Pillman, Eric Bischoff leaves commentary and comes down to ringside to tell security to get Pillman out of the building. Back to the match, Duggan fights out of a bearhug by biting the Giant's nose, but Giant keeps control. Duggan is able to turn the tides by dodging a splash in the corner before clotheslining the Giant out of the ring. However, the Giant gets right back in the ring and locks in another bearhug. Duggan tries to fight out again, but the Giant stops him and headbutts him out of the ring. Duggan takes the tape they use to keep the wires down and wraps his fist as the Giant knocks out the referee for no reason. Duggan floors the Giant with the taped fist before Hart grabs Duggan and distracts him. Duggan clocks Hart, but the distraction is enough to allow the Giant to recover and hit the chokeslam for the win. God that was awful. It took the Giant WAY too long to beat Jim Duggan, and he only won because of interference.
- The Nasty Boys EXCEPT NOPE! According to Bischoff, the Nasty Boys are receiving medical attention. Instead, the Road Warriors face the returning STEINER BROTHERS, who are back after their two-year stint in the WWF and their brief run in ECW. They ride down to the ring on motorcycles to face who the Nasty Boys were supposed to face...
- The Steiner Brothers vs The Road Warriors-Scott Steiner & Hawk start off and go back and forth until Scott hits a twisting belly-to-belly suplex. Scott follows up with a pump handle slam before setting up Hawk on the top rope. Hawk knocks him down and hits a diving clothesline followed by a big boot. Hawk hits a neckbreaker, which Scott responds to with a double underhook powerbomb. Rick Steiner & Animal both tag in and Animal hits a powerslam followed by a dropkick, a bodyslam, and an elbow drop. Rick responds with two stiff clotheslines and a German suplex before setting up Animal on the top rope for an overhead belly-to-belly superplex. Scott tags in and hits an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Ahh...the memories. The unbearable memories. Scott hits a powerslam into the corner before tagging Rick back in. The Steiners continue to work over Animal until he & Scott both go down on a double clothesline spot. Hawk gets the hot tag and runs wild on the Steiners, clotheslining Scott out of the ring before hitting a shoulder tackle and a powerslam on Rick. The Road Warriors hit the Doomsday Device, but Scott is able to break up the pinfall. Scott & Animal fight out the outside as Rick hits a German suplex on Hawk. The Steiners go for a Doomsday Device of their own, but a distraction from Animal allows Hawk to hit a side suplex on Rick. Scott hits a diving clothesline on Hawk before taking one from Animal. Both teams brawl until Scott hits a Frankensteiner on Animal, but Hawk breaks up the pin, even though neither Animal nor Scott were the legal men. The Steiners hit the Steinerizer, an electric chair/diving bulldog combo, but Animal clocks Rick with one of the Road Warriors' spiked shoulder pads, allowing Hawk to make the cover and get the win. Really good match, just four guys beating the piss out of eachother and it was great. After the match, Mean Gene interviews the Steiners. They say they came back to WCW for the Road Warriors and tells them to remember this day. Mean Gene asks them what happened to the Nasty Boys, which they completely brush off. They say this isn't the end of this rivalry.
- Lex Luger (c) vs Alex Wright-WCW Television Championship-How did Lex Luger become the Television Champion? Well, Johnny B. Badd wasn't too keen on his current storyline with Kimberly Page. So much so that he actually left WCW because of it. He ended up dropping the title to Luger on an episode of WCW Saturday Night after Badd got a Diamond Cutter from Diamond Dallas Page. He left WCW after that. So now, Luger is a double champion, being both the Television Champion and one-half of the Tag Team Champions with Sting. The match kicks off with Wright hitting a dropkick before locking in an armbar. Wright continues to control the beginning of the match until he dropkicks Luger out of the ring and hits a big tope to the outside. Back in the ring, Wright hits a double ax handle for a near fall before Luger rams Wright into the ring post. Luger then knees Wright to the outside, where he rams him into the apron. Back in the ring, Luger hits a gorilla press slam before posing. Wright comes back with a springboard crossbody, but Luger stops his momentum with a Snake Eyes. Luger continues to beat down on Wright until Wright gets a boot up on a charging Luger and fights back, hitting three big uppercuts followed by a jumping back elbow and a back body drop. Wright hits a leg lariat for a near fall before hitting a missile dropkick. Wright back to the top rope, but Jimmy Hart runs down and grabs his ankle. Wright kicks him off, but it's enough for Luger to recover and catch him off a dive. Luger drops on the top rope and makes the cover for the win. Luger celebrates but tells Hart to leave the ring. Pretty good match, bad ending, though.
- Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Kevin Sullivan with Miss Elizabeth & Woman vs Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and the Booty Man in a Double Strap Lumberjack match Jesus Christ, that's a mouthful. So in this match, All six men are going to have leather straps while all the lumberjacks have leather straps. Among the lumberjacks are the Giant & Loch Ness. The babyfaces rush the ring and go after the heels without the straps being attached. Outside of the ring, the Giant holds Hogan back so Flair can chop him before Loch Ness tries to hit Hogan with the strap. Hogan dodges, however, and hits the Giant in the face, which leads to them brawling to the back. Back in the ring, the babyfaces kick the sh*t out of the heels while the lumberjacks all start fighting eachother. Once again, Kimberly Page comes down to the ring with flowers. Flair tries to run to the back, but Road Warrior Animal chases him down and carries him back to ringside. Bischoff says the lumberjacks might be taking their jobs "too seriously." Even though making sure people don't leave the ring is the exact job of the lumberjacks in this match. If anything, Animal is the only one doing his job. A+, Animal. D-, Bischoff. F to the Drifter just because f*ck the Drifter. Chaos ensues as Hogan beats the shit out of every lumberjack because "why not?" There's way too much going on right now and it's almost impossible to follow. At one point Konnan reaches into the ring to whip Kevin Sullivan for no reason. Eventually, Hogan hits the leg drop on Flair for the win. I bet this match is what ADHD feels like. Hogan chases Flair & co. to the back as Savage and the Booty Man celebrate in the ring. Somehow, Flair, Anderson, and Sullivan find their way back to the ring where they are interviewed by Mean Gene. Sullivan says Hogan & Savage will lose at Uncensored in the Doomsday Cage match. Anderson says what happened tonight was not professional wrestling. Yeah, no sh*t. Instead, it was just a taste of what will happen at Uncensored. Flair tells Savage & Hogan to come back out to the ring. Flair then comes to the commentary table and goes mental for a bit too close the show.
And that's about it. Overall, I'd say Nitro had the better show. The Steiners/Road Warriors match was really good and the Luger/Wright match was fine. There was a bit too much nonsense towards the end and the opening match was sh*t, but compared to RAW, which had pretty much nothing worth watching, Nitro was still better.
RAW: 11
Nitro: 13
That's it for this edition of RAW vs Nitro. Stay tuned for the next one.
