So yeah...it's been a while since I've reviewed NXT. No excuse, I just didn't get around to watching it the last few weeks. But now, I'm going to get back into the swing of things. Let's get into this review.
- Before the show, William Regal talks about the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and announces that NXT will be holding it again this year, with the finals taking place at NXT Takeover: Toronto. Regal adds that the brackets for the tournament will be revealed on social media over the next few days and the first matches will be held next week.
- Tye Dillinger vs Angelo Dawkins-What is Angelo Dawkins? Seriously, what is this guy's gimmick? I have no idea what this guy is supposed to be. He comes out, does that stirring hand motion thing, and wears two headbands. What is this guy? Whatever. So Dawkins does that stirring thing for like a solid twenty seconds straight before Dillinger hits a snapmare, does a cartwheel, and throws up the 10 right in Dawkins' face and mocks the stirring thing. Dillinger is great. Dawkins forces Dillinger into the corner before decking him with a punch. Dillinger turns the tides and chops Dawkins before running wild. He hits a flying forearm, followed by an inverted atomic drop and a clothesline. Dillinger stomps away at Dawkins before hitting a side Russian leg sweep and pulling down his knee pad. Dillinger hits the Tye Breaker for the win. OK match, nothing really worth watching, though. After the match...GLORIOUS! Bobby Roode comes out and says Dillinger's performance was impressive, but that he's not a 10 yet. Roode says one of the reasons he came to NXT was to win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, and the crowd already knows what happens next. Roode asks Dillinger to be his partner, and Dillinger accepts.
- Hideo Itami gets interviewed. He says he's looking forward to facing Lince Dorado tonight because he's a great fighter and, unlike Austin Aries, has heart. He adds that Aries is a baby and a coward, and says he might need to put him to sleep again.
- The Ealy Brothers vs The Revival-Except NOPE! Samoa Joe storms down to the ring and beats down the Ealy Brothers. He sentons them to death as The Revival walk to the back. Joe takes the mic and says the Ealys are the first victims of his inability to make a decision. He threatens to continue the attacks until he gets to fight Nakamura again or he is given back the NXT Championship. He drops the mic and tosses one Ealy into the steps before leaving.
- We get a vignette for Dan Matha. He looks like Simon Miller from WhatCulture.
- Mandy Rose vs Ember Moon-The two go back and forth to start before Mandy hits a big punch. Moon responds with big kicks and a fallaway slam. Moon hits a springboard crossbody for a near fall before Mandy hits a bicycle knee strike for a near fall. Mandy works over Moon, even countering a hurricanrana attempt by Moon into a sit-out facebuster for a near fall. Damn, it looked great! Moon sends Mandy into the second turnbuckle face-first after springing up off her back and hitting a headscissor takedown and hits the O-Face for the win. Really good match. Mandy, in particular, was very impressive, she surprised me by how good she did. Not taking anything away from Ember Moon, of course, she's always great.
- Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa get interviewed. They talk about the fight they had at the Cruiserweight Classic with the Revival and announce that they are entering the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic again this year. They also say they will beat the Revival and become the NXT Tag Team Champions.
- Another Sanity vignette plays.
- The Authors of Pain vs Jesus Yurnet & Jonathon Cruz-So the Authors of Pain finally got names. The one with the tattoo is Akam and the one without is Rezar. They face Jesus Yurnet, aka Mr. 450, and Jonathon Cruz. The Authors of Pain destroy him before grabbing Cruz and destroying him. Rezar then gorilla presses him and tosses him to the outside. The Authors hit the Russian leg sweep/lariat combo on Yurnet for the win. After the match, Paul Ellering takes the mic. He says the first chapter was the arrival, and the next chapter will unleash a plethora of pain.
- William Regal gets interviewed. He says doesn't have an update on Shinsuke Nakamura, but he can give us information on who's going to be in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. He is interrupted by...Blake & Murphy. No joke, the guys who broke up about 5 or 6 times a few months ago are apparently a team again and want in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. They argue other who was the problem with the team before the broke up, so Regal rejects their offer. They bicker about who's fault that was as they leave.
- Liv Morgan vs Asuka-The two go back and forth to start before Morgan hits a dropkick. That does nothing to Asuka, so Asuka takes her to the ground and traps both her arms behind her. Morgan taps out and Asuka gets the quick win. After the match, Asuka says nobody is ready for her.
- Lince Dorado vs Hideo Itami-The two shake hands before the match. The two exchange holds before Dorado hits a snapmare and a hurricanrana. More back and forth action before a stare down. More back and forth offense before Itami catches Dorado with a kick off a springboard. Itami goes to work on Dorado with kicks and knees before Dorado dropkicks him off the top rope and to the outside. Dorado follows that up with a dropkick through the ropes and a springboard moonsault before the commercial break. We come back to Dorado working over Itami before hitting a spinning heel kick for a near fall. Itami hits a tornado DDT into the top rope followed by a diving clothesline. Itami hammers away at Dorado with kicks and strikes, but Dorado avoids the hesitation dropkick and hits a hurricanrana for a near fall. Itami catches Dorado off a handspring springboard and goes for the GTS, but Dorado escapes and gets two near falls off of roll ups. Dorado kicks Itami in the head and goes for a shooting star press, but Itami dodges and hits two big boots and a hesitation dropkick. Itami finishes Dorado off with the GTS for the win. Really good match, fast-paced and exciting. After the match, Aries jumps Itami, but Aries ends up running from Itami after almost taking a roundhouse kick to close the show.
And that's about it. Overall, a really good episode of NXT. The matches were good or entertaining and all the promos moved the stories forward.
