My Thoughts on SmackDown (4/11/17): Shake It Up...Again

  • Before the show, a quick note. David Otunga has been traded to RAW for Byron Saxton. I was hoping that both of them would get moved to ECW, but whatever.
  • We kick off the show with SmackDown's newest superstar...United States Champion Kevin Owens! He says this is the new Kevin Owens Show and that SmackDown got a huge upgrade. He says the title is in good hands with a Canadian like him because Canada is better than the United States. The crowd chants "USA" at him, so he challenges anyone who has a problem with what he's saying then they can get in the ring and fight him. He says he's on SmackDown only for himself and to be the new face of America. Outcomes Baron Corbin, who says Owens can beat up anyone in this arena...except for him. He says he beat Dean Ambrose so bad last week he ran to RAW, where Ambrose beat Owens so bad he ran here to SmackDown. He says he is owed a championship match for beating Ambrose, but since he's not here anymore, he wants the United States Championship. Owens says he doesn't deserve a title shot before another new SmackDown superstar shows up...Sami Zayn! Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn really are destined to do this forever. Zayn announces he's on SmackDown before AJ Styles comes out. Styles says this isn't the Kevin Owens Show, it's about SmackDown, and SmackDown is about him. Daniel Bryan comes out and announces that whoever wins the United States Championship match at Payback between Kevin Owens or Chris Jericho will be on SmackDown, so the title will not be defended on SmackDown until then. However, there will be a #1 Contenders match between AJ Styles, Sami Zayn, and Baron Corbin.
  • Randy Orton vs Erick Rowan-Orton controls the match to start before Rowan hits back elbow. Rowan sets Orton up on the top rope, but Orton fights back before quickly hitting a powerslam. Orton stomps Rowan until Rowan rolls out of the ring, where Orton throws Rowan into the steps. Back in the ring, Orton hits a draping DDT and calls for the RKO, only for Bray Wyatt to appear on the big screen. He says Orton reeks of fear and says he'll see Orton in the House of Horrors. Rowan takes this time to hit Orton with the steel steps to cause a DQ before hitting a full nelson slam.
  • The Usos (c) vs American Alpha-SmackDown Tag Team Championships-Jordan & Jey Uso start with Jordan hit a tilt-a-whirl slam for a quick near fall. Gable tags in for a double Northern Lights suplex for a near fall before Jimmy Uso tags in. Jordan makes a blind tag before American Alpha toss both Usos out of the ring before the commercial break. We come back to Jey Uso hitting an enziguri on Jordan. Jordan breaks free and makes the hot tag to Chad Gable, who suplexes both Usos around the ring before hitting a beautiful moonsault on Jimmy Uso for a near fall. Gable follows up with a hanging armbar, only for Jey to superkick him while he hangs. Jimmy goes for the top rope splash, but Gable blocks it with his knees and gets a near fall off a roll up. Jordan tags in and hits the Steinerizer with Gable, but Jey Uso breaks up the pin. The Usos send American Alpha out of the ring and go for double suicide dives, but American Alpha catch them and hit tandem belly-to-belly suplexes. American Alpha go for Grand Amplitude, but Jey superkicks Jordan before Jimmy tags out and superkicks Gable before Jey hits the top rope splash for the win to retain the titles. Really good match. After the match, The Shining Start show up and attack American Alpha, hitting a powerbomb/backstabber combo on Gable.
  • Mojo Rawley vs Jinder Mahal-So yeah...Jinder Mahal's on SmackDown now. Mahal takes the fight right to Mojo, who shakes it off and punches away at Mahal. The two go back and forth until Mahal hits a knee strike for a near fall. Mahal controls the match until Mahal bowls over Mahal. Mahal gives Mojo snake eyes in the corner before going to confront Rob Gronkowski, who is in the front row and also cost Mahal the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Mojo knocks Mahal into Gronk, who throws a beer in Mahal's face like Mahal did to him at WrestleMania. This allows Mojo to get Mahal back in the ring and hit a running forearm for the win. Mojo & Gronk celebrate in the crowd after the match.
  • Outcomes Shane McMahon. He says that all the fans have made SmackDown the land of opportunity and that's best shown with the SmackDown Women's Divison. He brings out the entire SmackDown Women's Division before James Ellsworth takes the mic. He says Naomi is a horrible champion and people only watch SmackDown for Carmella & himself. He makes specific mention of the fact that Carmella's from New York to piss off the Boston crowd before Naomi threatens Ellsworth. Shane says the newest woman on the SmackDown roster is a 2nd generation superstar and the daughter of a WWE Hall of Famer. That's right...Tamina Snuka. Ah, you see, it was a swerve! Shane then brings out another new superstar...Charlotte! And the segment just kind of...ends there.
  • We find out that Sin Cara, Rusev, and Lana will be coming to SmackDown.
  • Tye Dillinger vs Aiden English-English says the spotlight is on him now and starts to sing before being interrupted by Dillinger. Dillinger does a SmackDown before throwing up the 10 right in English's face. English responds by beating down Dillinger in the corner, but Dillinger dodges a knee drop and runs wild. Dillinger does ten stomps in the corner before hitting the Tye Breaker for the win.
  • We get a vignette hyping up Lana's arrival to SmackDown. It said "coming soon" which in WWE-terms means at least four months
  • Dolph Ziggler is out for a promo. He says everyone is talking about the Superstar Shakeup and what's going to happen to Dolph Ziggler. He says he's staying on SmackDown and he's the reason SmackDown is cool. He is interrupted by Shinsuke Nakamura, who Dolph berates for interrupting him, asking who he thinks he is. Nakamura takes Ziggler's mic and answers him. Ziggler tries to superkick him, but Nakamura blocks it and tells him to bring it. Ziggler opts not to and leaves the ring.
  • The New Day are coming to SmackDown!
  • Sami Zayn vs Baron Corbin vs AJ Styles-United States Championship #1 Contenders match-Zayn & Styles double team Corbin at the start before going for a double suplex, only for Corbin to double suplex them. Corbin sends Styles out of the ring before Zayn floors him with a headscissor takedown. Zayn & Styles send Corbin out of the ring before Zayn & Styles go at it. The two go back and forth until Zayn hits a pop-up dropkick. Zayn goes for a somersault tope, but Corbin yanks him out of the ring and throws him down onto the ramp. Corbin floors Styles with a punch, only for Zayn to hit a springboard moonsault on both Corbin & Styles before the commercial break. We come back to Corbin controlling the match. Zayn manages to drop Corbin with a clothesline before back body dropping Styles out of the ring. Zayn gives Corbin an exploder suplex into the corner and goes for the Helluva Kick, but Styles runs in and hits the Ushigoroshi before Corbin clotheslines him. Styles takes out Corbin with a running knee from the apron before Zayn gives him a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. Zayn sets up Styles on the top rope and goes for a superplex, but Corbin picks him up in an electric chair. Styles tries for the Phenomenal Forearm, but Zayn rolls through, causing Styles to miss before Zayn gets a near fall off a roll up. Corbin hits the Deep Six on Zayn, but Styles breaks up the pinfall. Styles hits an enziguri from the apron on Corbin before hitting a springboard 450, but Zayn breaks up the pinfall. All three men trade strikes before Styles goes for the Styles Clash on Zayn. However, Zayn flips Styles onto the apron before knocking Corbin off the apron with a Helluva Kick. Zayn then turns around into a Phenomenal Forearm from Styles, who picks up the win in a great match.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
