My Thoughts on SmackDown (4/18/17): Jinder Mahal Is Getting a WWE Championship Match. No, Seriously

  • OK, I missed the beginning of this show, so I'm going to briefly summarize what I saw. Charlotte wants a title match. Shane put her in a match against Naomi. If she wins, she gets a title shot. End of story.
  • Backstage, Natalya gets mad at Shane for putting Charlotte in a #1 contenders match. Shane says Natalya had an opportunity at WrestleMania, but Natalya says that wasn't a singles match so it doesn't count. Carmella & James Ellsworth show up and say she wants a title shot too. Tamina shows up and says she wants a title shot. Everyone argues until Natalya suggests they go all go talk about it.
  • Dolph Ziggler vs Erick Rowan vs Jinder Mahal vs Mojo Rawley vs Luke Harper vs Sami Zayn in a #1 Contenders match for the WWE Championship-Jesus...Erick Rowan, Jinder Mahal, and Mojo Rawley are in a #1 contenders match for the WWE Championship. That's like...the last thing I would ever do. The six men brawl before Ziggler & Harper are the only men in the ring. Harper launches Ziggler in the air before hitting a big boot for a near fall. Rowan gets in the ring, so Harper floors him and hits a slingshot senton. Zayn gets in, only to eat a Michinoku Driver for a near fall before the commercial break. We come back to see a double superplex spot before Zayn hits a sunset flip powerbomb on Jinder for a near fall. Zayn goes for the Blue Thunder Bomb on Ziggler, but Ziggler blocks it and hits a superkick. Harper immediately superkicks Ziggler and clotheslines him, but Rowan breaks up the fall. Mahal takes out Rowan beroe Rawley bowls him over. Zayn sends Rawley out of the ring, only to go out right after thanks to Harper, who hits two suicide dives. Harper takes a dropkick from Ziggler, who turns into a spinning heel kick from Rowan for a near fall. Rowan picks up Ziggler and powerbombs him out onto everyone else before throwing Zayn back in the ring for a near fall before the commercial break. We come back to Ziggler & Rawley in the ring. Rawley runs wild on Ziggler, hitting a fireman's carry slam. Rawley connects with the running punch in the corner, but Jinder throws out and makes the cover, only for Zayn to break up the pin. Jinder takes out Zayn with a high knee, but Rowan hits an Uranage for a near fall, with the pin broken up by Harper. Rowan gets Harper on the top rope, but Ziggler sneaks in with a Zig Zag for a near fall. Ziggler goes for the Famouser, but Harper counters it with a powerbomb for a near fall. Harper calls for the discus lariat, but Mahal yanks him out of the ring. Zayn takes out Mahal before hitting a somersault tope on Harper followed by a springboard moonsault on Rawley. Back in the ring, Zayn hits the corner exploder suplex on Jinder and calls for the Helluva Kick, but the Bollywood Boyz grab his ankles and distract him, allowing Jinder to hit a cobra clutch slam for the win. Jinder Mahal is the #1 contender for the WWE Championship. That is not a joke. He says people boo him for a variety of reasons and that people will have to accept him as the next WWE Champion. This brings out Randy Orton, who congratulates Jinder on his win, but says his prize will be an RKO. Orton turns his attention to Bray Wyatt while Mahal is standing right there and says he'll burn down his House of Horrors. That's how much of an afterthought Jinder is. Wyatt appears on the screen and does some spooky stuff.
  • We get a vignette hyping the SmackDown debut of the New Day.
  • Renee Young interviews AJ Styles. He says it doesn't matter if he faces Kevin Owens or Chris Jericho for the United States Championship because he's got the home field advantage on SmackDown. Baron Corbin wonders in and questions why Styles is getting interviewed. He says Styles stuck his nose in his business before Styles challenges him to a match.
  • Backstage, Charlotte is approached by Natalya, Carmella, and Tamina. They sarcastically welcome her to SmackDown. This probably didn't need to happen.
  • Charlotte Flair vs Naomi-The two lock up before Charlotte hits a discuss forearm and beats down Naomi in the corner. Charlotte makes a cover but only gets one before locking in a headlock. Charlotte controls the match until Naomi gets a few near falls off of roll ups. Naomi locks in a wrist lock, but Charlotte regains control with headscissors. Charlotte controls the match before Naomi takes down Charlotte with headscissors and hits a leg drop for a near fall. Charlotte chops Naomi, so Naomi kicks Charlotte before doing the quick kicks for a near fall. Naomi sends herself & Charlotte out of the ring with a hurricanrana before the commercial break. We come back to Charlotte working over Naomi with a dragon sleeper. Charlotte breaks it with an elevated leg drop for a near fall. Charlotte controls the match until Naomi dodges a knee drop. Naomi follows up with a kick out of the corner and a roll up for a near fall. Naomi forearms Charlotte to death before hitting a hurricanrana. Naomi hits a wheelbarrow stunner followed by a springboard crossbody for a near fall. Naomi goes for the Rear View, but Charlotte blocks it with a big boot and pins Naomi after Natural Selection for the win. This was kind of lame. Charlotte dominated the entire match and the match made it look like Naomi wasn't even remotely in Charlotte's league.
  • Backstage, Charlotte is confronted by the same women she walked past before the match. Nothing happens. It's like SmackDown was a minute short, so they added these pointless segments.
  • American Alpha vs The Colons-The Shining Stars gimmick seems to be done now since they aren't called the Shining Stars anymore. So this marks the 4TH GIMMICK THIS TEAM HAS GOTTEN. First, they were just Primo & Epico. Then they were Los Matadores. Then they were the Shining Stars. And now they're the Colons. Will this finally be the gimmick that gets over?...Probably not. Primo & Gable start with Gable mat wrestling Primo to the ground. Jordan tags in and launches Primo into the air for a near fall. American Alpha controls the match until a distraction from Epico allows Primo to throw Gable into the post through the turnbuckles. Epico tags in for a double underhook gutbuster before clotheslining Gable. Epico sets up Gable on the top rope, but Gable turns it into a hanging armbar. Jordan gets the hot tag, suplexes Epico around before Epico rolls up Jordan with an assist from Primo for the win. Man, how far has American Alpha fallen? They were hot sh*t in NXT but now they're doing jobs to Primo & Epico.
  • We get a vignette for Lana's SmackDown debut. She dances. That's it.
  • Dasha Fuentes interviews Tye Dillinger. He says he has a video that explains why people like him so much. Having pre-planned vignettes? I like it, but it seems kind of heelish to have that. He says that's why people call him the Perfect 10.
  • Kevin Owens vs Gary Gandy-Face of America Open Challenge-Greg Hamilton starts to introduce Owens, but he takes the mic from him and does it himself. Needless to say, Owens squashes Gandy. Owens takes the mic and calls all Americans lazy before saying he'll be the face of America as long as he's the United States Champion. He says neither Chris Jericho or AJ Styles can take that away from him before saying he'll be taking a seat at commentary for the main event.
  • Baron Corbin vs AJ Styles-Styles uses his speed advantage to avoid Corbin and kick him. Styles avoids Corbin's stomps. Styles continues to kick away at Corbin until Corbin decks him with a straight right. Styles goes for a sleeper hold, but Corbin frees himself and throws Styles out of the ring. The two go back and forth on the outside before Corbin drops Styles onto the ring apron before the commercial break. We come back to see Corbin toss Styles into the ring post under the bottom turnbuckle. Corbin controls the match until Styles is able to send Corbin into the post. Styles hits a Pele Kick followed by a corner forearm and a sliding forearm for a near fall. Styles goes for the Styles Clash, but Corbin blocks it and hits a backbreaker for a near fall. Styles locks in the Calf Crusher, but Corbin gets a rope break. Corbin comes back with a Deep Six for a near fall before Styles sends Corbin out of the ring. Styles hits a sliding knee on the apron but gets thrown into Kevin Owens by Corbin when he goes for the Styles Clash on the outside. Corbin goes for the End of Days on the outside, but Styles flips out of it and hits a Pele Kick before forearming Corbin over the barricade. Styles barely beats the ten count and wins by countout. Pretty good match.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
