My Thoughts on SmackDown (4/25/17): Stark Raving Ziggler

  • We kick off the show with Renee Young interviewing Shinsuke Nakamura in the ring. However, before Nakamura can say anything, Dolph Ziggler interrupts. He mockingly interviews Nakamura, mocking his broken English and saying he was Nakamura's biggest influence. Ziggler goes completely off the rails, implying that Nakamura is actually Michael Jackson. I don't know what the f*ck is going on. I think Ziggler's gone mental. He calls Nakamura a pathetic overrated freak before Nakamura takes the mic. He asks what Ziggler's problem is before calling him a jackass. That earns him a kick to the gut before Ziggler goes for a superkick. However, Nakamura catches him with an inverted exploder suplex and goes for the Kinshasa, but Ziggler escapes and rolls out of the ring.
  • AJ Styles vs Baron Corbin-Kevin Owens is on commentary for this match. Styles tries to use his quickness to gain an advantage at first, but Corbin is able to counter it with his strength. Styles is able to lock in a headlock on Corbin and keep him grounded, but Corbin is able to power out and boot Styles from the ring before the commercial break. We come back to Corbin applying half nelson to Styles. Styles is able to fight out, only to eventually take a backbreaker for a near fall. Corbin controls the match until Styles avoids a superplex and hits a Pele Kick. Styles strikes Corbin down to the mat before hitting a basement forearm smash for a near fall. Styles goes for the Styles Clash, but Corbin powers out. Styles tries for the Calf Crusher, but Corbin blocks it by holding the ropes and knocks Styles down. Styles counters a corner splash and sets up for the Phenomenal Forearm. However, a distraction from Kevin Owens allows Corbin enough time to recover and avoid the forearm. Corbin goes for a powerbomb, but Styles rolls through and pins Corbin with a sunset flip for the win. Pretty decent match, nothing special though. After the match, Owens & Corbin beat down Styles before Sami Zayn runs down to the ring. Owens leaves the ring before Corbin takes a Helluva Kick. Owens knocks Zayn out of the ring before giving Styles a Pop-Up Powerbomb.
  • Dasha Fuentes interviews Charlotte. She says gold runs through her veins and she's going to rule SmackDown. She says she needs the SmackDown Women's Championship to exist and tonight she'll prove again that she is the best superstar in WWE history.
  • American Alpha vs The Colons-Beat the Clock Challenge-It's the first ever Tag Team Beat the Clock Challenge. The team that wins their match in the fastest time becomes the #1 contenders for the Tag Team Championships. Gable kicks off with a quick near fall off a backslide before taking the fight to the mat. Gable tries for another quick pin before tagging in Jordan for a dropkick. American Alpha controls the match until Epico hits a big boot. Epico stomps away at Gable for a near fall before Primo hits a body guillotine for another near fall. The Colons control the match before they go for the powerbomb into the backstabber. However, Jordan shoves Primo out of the way and hits Grand Amplitude with Gable for the win in 5:17. Standard tag match, not much to talk about
  • We get a video sent in by Rusev. He says he doesn't like Daniel Bryan or Shane McMahon, and he'll only come to SmackDown if he gets a title match at Money in the Bank. If he doesn't get it, he'll go back to Bulgaria.
  • Dasha Fuentes interviews Becky Lynch. She says she appreciates that Charlotte is getting results before being interrupted by Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella. They tell her that she's either with them or against them.
  • Randy Orton vs Erick Rowan in a No Disqualifications match-Rowan overpowers Orton to start, forcing him into the corner before flooring him with a shoulder block. Orton comes back and clotheslines Rowan out of the ring. Rowan pulls Orton out of the ring and the two brawl at ringside. Orton shoves Rowan into the post before throwing him into the barricade and back suplexing him onto it. Orton continues to beat down Rowan at ringside before Rowan throws Orton into the ring steps. Back in the ring, Rowan hits a body avalanche in the corner followed by a dropkick for a near fall. Rowan leaves the ring and grabs a kendo stick before, beating Orton down with it for a near fall. Rowan grabs a table and sets it up at ringside before trying to suplex Orton from the apron. However, Orton blocks it and smacks Rowan with the kendo stick until he falls off the apron and through the table before the commercial break. We come back to Rowan beating down Orton in the corner. Rowan controls the match until Orton catches Rowan coming in through the ropes with a draping DDT. Orton goes for the RKO, but Rowan blocks it and hits Orton with the kendo stick. Rowan boots Orton out of the ring before smashing the steel steps into him. Rowan throws Orton back in the ring before grabbing a chair and wedging it in the corner. Rowan tries to throw Orton into it, but Orton stops himself and throws Rowan into it. Orton hits the RKO for the win. Pretty decent match. After the match, Orton says the House of Horrors match will be Bray Wyatt's eternal hell. He is then confronted by the #1 contender for the WWE Championship, Jinder Mahal. That still sounds like a joke, but it's not. He says Orton should be worried about him because he's the real horror. He says he has more wealth, talent, class, and culture than Orton and Orton only shows him disrespect because he looks different. Great. He's a generic foreign heel. Mahal says at Backlash he will take, in his own words, "the world WWE Championship back to me and my people." Why is this guy #1 contender? He begins to speak Punjabi before trying to hit Orton, but Orton outmatches him. Orton tries to give him a draping DDT, but the Bollywood Boyz, now called the Singh Brothers show up again to stop him. The Singh Brothers hold Orton down as Mahal stomps away at Orton before hitting the cobra clutch slam. Mahal & the Singhs leave with the WWE Championship.
  • We get another vignette of Lana dancing.
  • We see Mahal & the Singhs leaving SmackDown in a limo with the WWE Championship.
  • Breezango vs The Ascension-Beat the Clock Challenge-So, in order to become the #1 contenders, one of these teams has to win the match in 5:17. Viktor immediately hits a corkscrew uppercut on Breeze for a near fall before tagging in Konnor for a sky lift slam, but the pin is broken up by Fandango. The Ascension controls the match until Breeze hits an enziguri. Breeze makes the tag to Fandango, who runs wild before getting caught with a high knee from Viktor for a near fall. Konnor tags in for a corner clothesline before Viktor hits another high knee for a near fall. The Ascension go for the Fall of Man, but Breeze is able to stop them before superkicking Viktor, allowing Fandango to hit a Falcon Arrow suplex for the win with 2:36 to spare. Breezango are the #1 contenders for the Tag Team Championships! Man, first Mahal, now Breezango, all the low card guys are getting title shots this month.
  • Renee Young interviews Naomi. She says Charlotte runs her mouth and since she's the champ, she's the best and she'll retain her title tonight.
  • Naomi (c) vs Charlotte-SmackDown Women's Championship-The champion came out first. Boo. The two go back and forth before Naomi bulldogs Charlotte into the middle turnbuckle. Charlotte rolls out of the ring and yanks Naomi down back-first onto the apron. Charlotte slams Naomi on the outside before the commercial break. We come back to Charlotte working over Naomi with a side headlock. Naomi fights to her feet, but Charlotte knocks her back down. Charlotte hangs Naomi up in the ropes before dropping a knee on her for a near fall. Charlotte controls the match until Naomi hits a spinning jawbreaker. Naomi gives Charlotte some quick kicks before hitting a hurricanrana and a back elbow. Naomi follows up with a wheelbarrow stunner and a kip up before dropping Charlotte from a fireman's carry into a roundhouse kick for a near fall. The two trade forearms before Naomi hits the Rear View, but only gets a two. Naomi goes for another hurricanrana, but Charlotte counters it with a sit-out powerbomb for a near fall. Charlotte goes for a moonsault, but Naomi blocks it with her knees, only for Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella to show up and attack both of them, causing a no contest. Naomi & Charlotte try to fight back, but they get outnumbered. Tamina lays out Charlotte with a superkick before Carmella hits one of her own on Charlotte. The heels stand tall to close the show.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
