RAW vs Nitro #44 (8/5/96)

Welcome back to another edition of RAW vs Nitro. Click here to read the last one if you missed it. So let's get into it, this is RAW vs Nitro #44.

RAW

  • Jerry Lawler vs Aldo Montoya-Before the match, Jerry Lawler runs down Jake Roberts for his addictions and says the only reason Montoya beat him on Superstars was because he got woozy from the alcohol fumes that have rubbed off on Montoya from Roberts. You know how I said the nWo attack on Nitro last time was good because it felt real. This is when things that feel real aren't good. This is is just in poor taste, especially considering that Roberts had a relapse and fell back into his addictions soon after this. Lawler offers Montoya some Jim Bean to give to Roberts after the match before dropping the mic. Montoya tries to pick it up to say something, but Lawler kicks Montoya when he does it. Lawler hits a suplex, but Montoya comes back and hits a dropkick. Montoya hits a punch off the top rope and goes for the DDT, but Lawler avoids it and clutches the referee for safety. Montoya controls the match until Lawler hits a piledriver. Lawler hits another piledriver for the win. After the match, Lawler takes the Jim Bean and pours it into Montoya's mouth until referees and officials stop him.
  • The New Rockers vs The BodyDonnas-Hillbilly Jim is on commentary for this match. The Rockers try a different strategy to jump their opponents, waiting by the big RAW entrance and jumping the BodyDonnas when they come out.
It works, as Jannetty & Cassidy are able to take out Skip and isolate Zip in the ring. The Rockers beat down Zip until Skip makes it to the ring. Jannetty avoids a dropkick and gets a near fall before we get a picture-in-picture promo from Sunny & Faarooq Assad. She says she's getting what she wants and that Skip can't measure up to Faarooq. Faarooq proceeds to cut a bizarre promo that barely makes any sense. "You know, it makes no difference to me if it's Skip or it's Dip. I'm here not to chose from what color he is red to green, from three to three hundred pounds. It makes no difference to me. I'm from a fighting background!" WHAT THE HELL IS HE TALKING ABOUT!? This must be why they only let him say "DAMN!" nowadays. That's not even the end of it. He keeps going on about how he's a tiger and not a lion and doesn't "need a pack of females to do his fighting for him." Jesus H. Christ. I was fully expecting something about how he's got a 141 2/3% chance of beating Skip next week at some point during this mess. So anyway, back to the match. Zip chops Cassidy and goes for a back suplex, but Cassidy is able to tag out while Zip holds him up. Zip manages to fend off the New Rockers and tags in Skip, who chops Jannetty in the corner. Jannetty comes back with a somersault cutter before going for the Rocker Dropper, but Skip counters it and clotheslines Jannetty. Skip goes to the top rope and hits a diving headbutt, but Cassidy breaks up the fall. Skip counters a back suplex and goes for a hurricanrana, but Jannetty drops Cassidy across the top rope with help by Cassidy. Jannetty throws Skip out of the ring, where Cassidy gives him a swinging neckbreaker on the outside. Cassidy rolls Skip back in the ring, where Skip breaks the fall by getting his foot on the ropes. The Rockers control the match, during which we see a picture-in-picture promo where Gorilla Monsoon reinstates Clarence Mason's client that we've seen for the last few weeks. The Rockers continue to control the match until a miscommunication. Cassidy goes to the top rope as Jannetty throws Skip at the ropes, causing Cassidy to get crotched on the top rope. This allows Skip to hit a Super Frankensteiner and sets up Cassidy for a seated senton by Zip. However, the Smoking Gunns run down and push Zip off the top rope to mercifully cause a DQ. The Gunns & the Rockers attack the BodyDonnas until the Godwinns run down to even the odds. The faces stand tall and boot the heels from the ring. This was dreadful. Zero heat, nothing interesting, it went on way too long and had a f*ck finish.
  • Shawn Michaels gets interviewed. He says he's been facing a lot of adversity lately, but he always comes through when facing adversity. He says he's just like everybody else before saying and the odds might be stacked against him at SummerSlam against Vader, but Vader's going to have to beat him and everyone behind him. He says he hopes Bret Hart returns to the WWF someday and in regards to the people criticizing the way he won the WWF Championship, says that critics are just going to criticize. He says no one else can be the WWF Champion and he thinks he's the shining star of the WWF.
  • RAW Invitational Battle Royal-This is an 11-man battle royal, with the winner receiving a WWF Championship match after SummerSlam. The commentators make note that Johnson is competing in this match against doctor's orders, considering how he has "a ruptured kidney" due to the attack by Faarooq Assad two weeks ago. Undertaker enters last and immediately brawls with Mankind, getting both of them eliminated in the process. The two brawl to the back as the match continues. British Bulldog is the next one out, getting thrown over the top rope by Ahmed Johnson. Justin Hawk Bradshaw gets tossed over the top rope by Sycho Sid before Owen Hart skins the cat to survive, only to get clotheslined out immediately after by Marc Mero. Mero is then backbody dropped out of the ring by Goldust before Savio Vega eliminates himself, flying over the top rope when he hits a spinning heel kick in the corner on Goldust. Stupid idiot...but it was hilarious. Meanwhile, Mankind & Undertaker end up brawling through the crowd and back into the ring before fighting back into the crowd. We're down to only four men, Sid, Johnson, Goldust, and Steve Austin. The four men brawl and try to throw eachother over the top rope for a long time. Eventually, the camera cuts to show the Undertaker & Mankind, still brawl in the back. Back to the match, the four continue to try to eliminate eachother before Owen Hart & the British Bulldog come back down to ringside. They distract Sid, who gets eliminated by Austin with a clothesline. Sid chases Hart & Bulldog to the back as Austin & Goldust double team Johnson, but Goldust quickly turns on Austin. Austin ends up low blowing Goldust, only to eliminated by both Johnson & Goldust. Johnson & Goldust are the final two. Johnson bodyslams Goldust, but collapses due to his kidney.  Goldust beats down Johnson before hitting a piledriver before the commercial break. We come back to see Johnson lock in a rear-naked choke on Goldust. Johnson tries to throw Goldust over the top rope, but Johnson's momentum takes him over the top rope to. Johnson, however, is able to save himself at the last second with this bizarre hang to win the match.
After the match, Vince McMahon interviews Johnson and his right butt cheek.
Johnson is quickly interrupted by Faarooq Assad, and the two brawl until the show ends. So Ahmed Johnson gets the win and gets a WWF Championship match the night after SummerSlam...except NOPE! You see, Johnson's kidney problems aren't exactly kayfabe. They were very real and so bad, he had to miss out on his match against Faarooq at SummerSlam. He ends up vacating the Intercontinental Championship and never gets his WWF Championship match.
That's it for RAW. Onto Nitro.

Nitro

  • Before the show, we see Big Bubba, Meng, the Barbarian, and Scott Norton coming out to ringside to act as security as Tony Schiavone says. Hell, you could probably just put Meng out there and they'd be fine. The Outsider would show up and he'd just bite their noses off.
  • Harlem Heat (c) with Sister Sherri & Col. Rob Parker vs The Rock 'n' Roll Express-WCW World Tag Team Championships-Stevie Ray & Ricky Morton start off, but Booker T quickly tags in. The two lock up before Booker floors Morton with a shoulder tackle. Booker continues to overpower Morton until Robert Gibson tags in for a double shoulder block and a double clothesline, sending Booker out of the ring. Stevie Ray tags in before the commercial break. We come back to the Rock 'n' Roll Express working over Stevie Ray's leg. Stevie Ray is able to fight back and tag in Booker, who floors Morton with a Harlem Side Kick. Booker follows up with a scissor kick for a near fall before tagging in Stevie Ray, who floors Morton with a back elbow. Harlem Heat controls the match until Morton dodges an elbow drop and makes the hot tag to Gibson. Gibson runs wild, hitting a back body drop on Booker and an enziguri on Stevie Ray. The Rock 'n' Roll Express hits a double dropkick and Gibson makes the cover, but the referee is distracted trying to get Morton out of the ring. Sherri tries to break up the fall by kissing Gibson, the same way she cost Rough & Ready the match three weeks ago, but Gibson shoves her off. This prompts Parker to hop on the apron. Gibson punches him down, but eats a bicycle kick from Stevie Ray when he turns around, allowing Booker to make the cover and get the win. The match was fine but it was definitely overbooked.
  • Mean Gene interviews the Nasty Boys. They say they're getting heat for being friends with Hulk Hogan, but he's doing what he's doing and they're doing what they're doing. They are interrupted by Sting & Lex Luger. Sting asks them point blank where they stand, with WCW or the Outsiders. They say they stand in Nastyville and it's none of their business where they stand. Sting & Luger leave before saying they don't think what Hogan did was neither right nor wrong.
  • GLACIER VIGNETTE!
Blood Has Run Cold For: 15 Episodes
  • Malia Hosaka with Sonny Onoo vs Madusa-Hey, remember that throwaway women's match we had three weeks ago? You want to see it again? No. Too bad. Madusa starts with a leg sweep before the two go back and forth. Madusa gets a near fall off a sunset flip before Hosaka starts to kick away at Madusa. Hosaka throws Madusa across the ring by her hair before stepping on her throat. Hosaka controls the match, working over Madusa's leg until Madusa hits a release German suplex for a near fall. Hosaka rolls Madusa into the ropes, negating the pinfall before Madusa sets up Hosaka on the top rope for a superplex. Madusa then dropkicks Sonny Onoo off the apron, allowing Hosaka to no sell the superplex, crawl over and pin Madusa while Onoo holds down Madusa's feet. That was a terrible ending. The match was nothing worth watching, just like their match three weeks ago.
  • Alex Wright vs Chris Benoit with Woman & Miss Elizabeth-Benoit beats down Wright in the corner to start until the referee pulls him off of Wright. Wright comes back with an uppercut and beats down Benoit in the corner before tossing him to the other corner. Wright bodyslams Benoit for a near fall before dropkicking Benoit out of the ring. Back in the ring, Benoit floors Wright with a shoulder block before slapping Wright. The two trade holds before going back and forth. Wright hits two headscissor takedowns before doing an arm drag and slapping on an armbar. Wright throws Benoit into the corner, but Benoit dodges a corner splash and hits a knee strike. Benoit follows up with a forearm for a near fall before hitting a back suplex for another near fall. Benoit controls the match as Jimmy Hart comes down to ringside. He pleads with Woman to leave the Four Horsemen's side and come to the Dungeon of Doom because she's driving Kevin Sullivan. Suddenly, Dean Malenko comes down and tries to take Woman to the back by force, prompting Benoit to abandon the match to brawl with Malenko, getting him counted out in the process. Benoit & Malenko continue to brawl, with Benoit throwing Malenko into a palm tree.
  • Lord Steven Regal with Jeeves vs Randy Savage-The two lock up before Regal applies a wrist lock and does a hip toss. Savage slaps on a wristlock of his own, but Regal escapes it takes down Savage with a drop toe hold. Regal continues to out-wrestle Savage until Savage kicks him in the gut and drags his face across the top rope. Savage beats down on Regal until Regal comes back with uppercuts. Regal applies a cobra clutch before uppercutting Savage and throwing him out of the ring. At the same time, we get to hour 2 of Nitro, but Eric Bischoff & Bobby Heenan are AWOL, so Schiavone & Zbyszko continue to do commentary. Regal throws Savage into the ring post outside the ring before bringing Savage back in the ring. Regal beats down Savage in the corner, but Savage fights back as Sting & Lex Luger come back down to ringside. They take a seat at some conveniently empty seats at ringside.
Meanwhile, Regal controls the match until Savage fires up, hits a back body drop, and takes Regal out of the ring. Savage throws Regal into the empty seats before bringing Regal back to the ring, bodyslams Regal, and hits the diving elbow drop for the win. Nothing match, not much to talk about. After the match, Sting & Luger decide to go check who's in that limo that keeps showing up at Nitro. Sting opens the door and...there's nobody. Just a bouquet reading "Condolences on the Death of WCW."
Sting brings the bouquet to the ring as Mean Gene interviews Savage. Mean Gene mentions that Savage will face whoever holds the World Heavyweight Championship after Hog Wild the next night on Nitro for the title, and also that he's been banned from Hog Wild. He says he cut a deal because he had to and if Hogan beats the Giant, he'll finish him off. Sting & Luger show Mean Gene & Savage the bouquet before Sting says WCW not dead, it's alive and well. The nWo should have waited like five years, the bouquet would've been very fitting. Savage decides to boot the bouquet field goal style.
  • The Booty Man with The Booty Babe vs Ric Flair with Woman, Miss Elizabeth, and Debra-It's the BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY MAN! He's back after being injured four months ago. Arn Anderson brings a chair and sits down right in front of the entranceway. Flair beats down the Booty Man to start before we see Mongo & Chris Benoit guarding the entrance way as well. Flair controls the match before the Booty Man starts to fight back. Suddenly, Bobby Heenan comes down to the commentary table, who complains about Eric Bischoff not showing up this week and says Bischoff never misses Nitro. Despite Flair locking in the Figure Four, the Horsemen decide to jump Booty Man and beat him down in the ring. Zbyszko notes that the Booty Man is friends with Hulk Hogan as Flair tosses the referee over the top rope. Anderson smashes a chair across the Booty Man's leg as Mean Gene gets in the ring. Anderson says that being taken out by the nWo made him realize that WCW needs to band together to take out the nWo. He warns the nWo that the Horsemen are the original gang in WCW and they're the most vicious gang before Benoit says what happened last week has made him angry. Mongo says the nWo better watch their backs because the Four Horsemen are after them. All of this happens as Flair continues to beat the sh*t out of the Booty Man. Flair continues to beat down the Booty Man before Flair says the nWo has the Horsemen's attention. Flair says the nWo made the mistake of taking out his best friend and they will pay.
  • We get an announcement paid for the nWo. The make jokes about sending four guys to the hospital before Hogan says he's going to take the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from the Giant at Hog Wild. They say they're going to exterminate WCW before the video abruptly pauses. We go back to Nitro, where the director tells Tony Schiavone that Sting & Lex Luger told him to get the nWo tape off the air.
  • Sgt. Craig Pittman with Teddy Long vs The Giant with Jimmy Hart-Pittman mounts some offense, but the Giant easily murks Pittman with a chokeslam. After the match, the Giant tries to give Pittman another chokeslam, but Teddy Long stops him, so the Giant chokeslams Long. Mean Gene interviews the Giant & Hart. Hart says he was the only one who told Hulk Hogan the truth as the nWo's limo comes back. Hart finishes by saying the Giant is ready for Hogan at Hog Wild. The Giant says what he did tonight was a message for the nWo. He says he's not a role model or a nice guy and he only has one job; to be the WCW World Heavyweight Champion. He says he doesn't feel sorry for anyone who gets in his way and says Hogan's time is over. He says if Hogan has any guts, he'll show up at Hog Wild, where the Giant will show them to him.
  • The Nasty Boys vs Sting & Lex Luger-The Steiner Brothers come down to stand watch at the entrance way. Luger and Jerry Saggs start off going back and forth before the Nastys hit a double shoulder block. Brian Knobbs hits two elbow drops for a near fall before Luger dodges a corner splash and clotheslines Knobbs. Sting tags in and hits a jumping clothesline before hitting a bulldog, but Saggs breaks up the pin. Saggs trips up Sting from outside the ring, allowing Knobbs to take control. The Nastys beat down Sting in the corner before Saggs clotheslines Sting. Knobbs tags in and splashes Sting in the corner before dropping an elbow for a near fall. The Nastys control the match until Sting blocks a second rope splash from Knobbs. Luger gets the hot tag and runs wild, running through both Nastys before power slamming Saggs. Luger goes for the Torture Rack on Saggs, but Knobbs stops him. All four men brawl before Saggs accidentally clotheslines Rick Steiner outside the ring. Steiner responds with a clothesline of his own, allowing Luger to roll Saggs back into the ring, where he submits to the Scorpion Death Lock for the win. Pretty decent match. Afterwards, Mean Gene interviews Sting & Luger, who have brought two small children into the ring.
Mean Gene points out the nWo limo is back, so they go to check the limo again. Mean Gene goes with them, expecting another gag. However, this time somebody is in there, and they throw Sting a satchel before driving off. They open the satchel to find a note from the nWo.
"Rey was right, there are four guys...or are there five? See ya in Sturgis."
And that's about it. RAW was better than it had been in recent episodes, but Nitro was still better. Better matches and a much more interesting story throughout the episode. Point to Nitro.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
